The main reason is probably that they didn't want to keep paying the writers of the original movie who still got paid whenever the name Danial Jackson was used.

I can't stand Daniel Jackson. I'm not joking when I say his main character trait is moral superiority. He never has to do anything wrong and he's always able to make everyone else feel like poo poo for their opinion on an issue. It wouldn't be a big deal if they didn't go out of their way to create this contrast. Normally, Jack O'Neill has a pretty strong moral compass and likes to go around righting wrongs. Not when it's an episode where Daniel Jackson is there! Sudden O'Neill turns into a cartoon military stereotype just so Daniel can spend the episode convincing him that they have to do the right thing. Daniel starts out as a good character but over the course of the series his flaws are eroded and he just becomes this giant super-powered thing that the plot starts to revolve around. By contrast, Jonas Quin was good because even though he was super smart and had a photographic memory, he came from a less technologically advanced culture than Earth. This made him more interesting and unique than Daniel "I'm the master of every language and technology*, and I never do anything morally gray" Jackson. Rodney McKay is tied* for smartest scientist in the universe, but he's an egocentric, inconsiderate dick. Good characters have a balance of strengths and flaws. Daniel Jackson lacks this balance. *When Sam is not around, he is also an expert on technology **Originally a tie with Sam. Later expanded to a 3-way tie with Sam and his sister.

Did anyone else feel that SGA lacked the self-awareness that SG-1 had? Both shows had really ridiculous stories all the time but in SGA they never joked about it. It was always serious, no matter how stupid the plot was. Sure there were plenty of jokes, but none really about themselves.

I think a lot of the joking around on SGA is much more subtle.

Everyone has said the last half of SGU's second season improves but it will be far too late: I hate the entire main cast and nothing can change that now. They really went out of their way to gently caress up a good franchise with SGU.

It was so terrible when it was bad, but at least it wanted to be something more than increasingly bland genre comfort food.

General Emergency posted:Actually it looks like he's lost quite a bit of weight. It's just all in his face somehow. The fat that he did put on wasn't from happily swallowing entire boxes of doughnuts while watching Simpsons marathons. Apparently, he very quietly had heart surgery and, around the same time, had a rod put in his foot and a few knee surgeries. So he couldn't do much of anything for quite a long time. Since he has spent his retirement up to that point scuba diving, white water rafting, and going on expeditions, him being forced to sit on his rear end for months took its toll. His face becoming disproportionately fatter makes some sense in that light. Before and after heart surgery, you see a lot of difference in people's faces. Hey, remember this fella?

So I've been watching SG-1 for a while and I'm in S7, coming up on S8. Going by the gateworld recommended viewing order I should start alternating between SG-1 and SG:A now. However they also say I can just watch SG-1 in it's entirety first. I don't really feel like alternating between episodes so I wanted to know from you guys if I would be doing myself a huge disservice if I watch SG-1 first, and then SG:A, or if indeed it matters at all. Maybe I can alternate between shows on a season-per-season basis?
