Did my first two games today. Oh dear god I can't see anything what's going on. First I played as the aliens and they're so freakishly fast that it's hard to see what's going on when I'm trying to bite someone's rear end. Then as a marine, the skulks are so fast that when they're up on me I have no hope at ALL of hitting them. This game is fun but jesus poo poo, and I played Tribes.

If it feels faster than tribes you probably either get poor framerates or have a sluggish mouse sensitivity. Skulks are fast and all but they don't move at 300+km/h.

I'm having trouble joining servers; I keep trying to join servers with 1 slot remaining only to be told the server is full, even if the server is not full during my next refresh of the list.

Eh, my mouse speed and framerate are fine. Tribes just takes place in huge, open maps with very few small corridors and rooms, so you almost never run right passed someone very close to you at speed and have to flail around to find them. In NS2 that's basically all that happens. I'm certainly not used to the game yet at all, but this feels like a much steeper learning curve.

Patch is out! Restart steam or verify cache to get it. Big deal: memory optimizations, crash fixes. Natural Selection 2 Build 228 is now live on Steam. This patch fixes crash issues some players are experiencing, especially those during the "pre-caching" phase of connecting to a server. If you do experience a crash in NS2, please submit the crash report via the displayed dialog; this information is very useful for us to fix any problems quickly. Fix - Fixed issue where the game would run out of memory on 32-bit Windows. - Fixed bug where unicode characters could not be deleted in text inputs. - The server browser scroll bar now resets when the menu is displayed and when the "Refresh" button is pressed. - Fixed server crash caused by getting a new ability in the same frame an Alien was destroyed. - Reduced bloom flicker (thanks slime!) - Reduced visual noise when ambient occlusion was enabled. Improvement - Added server list filter option to display favorites only. - Added option to disable camera animations. - Disabled automatic sorting of server list during refreshing. Optimization - Reduced client and server memory usage by 200-400 MB

Dumb aliens will hone in on you with a singleminded fixation, and if you time the sprint properly it's easy to lead them into your teammates' line of fire. Bloodmobile posted:If it feels faster than tribes you probably either get poor framerates or have a sluggish mouse sensitivity. Skulks are fast and all but they don't move at 300+km/h. This game is "faster" than Tribes in a way that's totally not comparable in terms of km/h. It's twitch speed. Twitch speed helps a lot in Tribes but it's not the whole game, in NS2 it pretty much is. speng31b fucked around with this message at 03:23 on Nov 2, 2012 |

My experience on dealing with skulks is to stagger your group of marines. It's much easier to shoot a skulk circling your buddy at the other end of the hall than right at your own feet if everyone clumps up.

octoroon posted:Twitch speed helps a lot in Tribes but it's not the whole game, in NS2 it pretty much is. Yeah there's not a whole lot of times in Tribes like in NS2 where you're rapidly flipping your view around forward and backward, up and down, left and right to kill that skulk nipping at you. NS2 would be hilarious with a gamepad, also.

Why has everyone been talking about NS and Tribes like they are the same? There's nothing at all a like between the two. Tribes is all about momentum and travel time on your shots. NS is about squad tactics and out maneuvering the enemy team.

The game is a little interesting right now. Technically marines should win most of the time seeing as they are easier to play and are much stronger when the game goes above a 6v6, which most servers do. However, you have a very low chance of getting a decent comm and an equally low chance of getting teammates that follow your orders as comm so it sort of balances out in a way.

Noone at all is comparing them as if they're similar, we're just responding to an anecdote that someone mentioned about NS2 being "too fast for them" even though they are used to Tribes, which is well-known for being one of the "fastest" FPSes. We all know that Tribes and NS2 are entirely dissimilar. But if we're in that vein, Tribes is really a little bit of a mishmash of everything. Most of the core skills you see are related to balancing your relative frame of reference with that of an enemy and then "leading," but with flag D oftentimes you are standing stock still while enemies zoom at you 200+ km/h and some NS2-style twitch speed does come into play there, and even some sniping on occasion. Tribes is kind of the omni-FPS. speng31b fucked around with this message at 03:56 on Nov 2, 2012 |

A tip for those of you having trouble aiming at the little buggers, lower your mouse sensitivity. Chances are you have it too high to begin with, even if you think you're comfortable with what you're used to. FPS twitch games need low sens.

So whats the alien counter to Exos? In all the games I've been in recently, it seems to go Assault Rifle vs Skulks, Shotgun vs Flyers/Gorges/Lurks, then Exos vs Skulks since all the aliens used up their resources in the Shotgun phase, except for the one decent/good player on alien side who didn't do much all game, but is now the sole Onos. It really seems like a bad play in midgame can really screw the alien game, since if everyone blew their resources early, then died, they'll have a tough time getting them back, and if it happens teamwide, everyone is suddenly at a severe disadvantage. Meanwhile Marines can make do with the Assault Rifle even up to Onos, and they seem to get resources just by existing.

Gorges! The Gorge's Bile Bomb is effective not only against buildings, but against Exosuits as well! With a good Gorge backing up a pack of Skulks I think you should be able to take on an Exosuit. I think it may also be a good idea for some Skulks or maybe even a Fade to focus on the Marines accompanying the Exosuit, as they probably have Welders and will simply repair any damage done to it.

A lone exo is horribly vulnerable to one skulk anklebiting it, especially if it doesn't have fully upgraded armor. An exo train should be bilebombed and skulkrushed.

Lerks and skulks destroy exo suits. Its hard for someone in a exo suit to even notice a skulk munching on them, much less a lerk hiding in the ceiling taking them apart with spikes. And they have a near impossible time hitting a skulk that is doing circles around their feet.

When the marine commander initiates a beacon, it will only beacon non-exo players back to base, leaving exo's alone without support. If you see an exo train coming, go chomp on the marine base until they beacon, then rush the exo's.

The gorge is so slow that any decent exo is going to chew him up as soon as you peek around the corner to bomb. I haven't had much trouble taking out one or two exos as a skulk as long as you get them separated from any supporting marines.

I think it's critical to have lerk spores tailing marines on exo repair duty. That'll force the escort marines to retreat unless the cmdr drop medpacks like a mad man. Then you spore some more then rush retreating exo. Two or more? I think umbra might help but I've yet to see an alien cmdr get it and try it with the lerk. Or what whiskas said and try to hit and run them down.

Spores are underutilized in general. Nothing sends marines into a panic quicker than being surrounded by lerk gas.
