Suaimhneas posted:Have high affinity between the characters. The higher it is the greater the chance the chain will continue. It won't happen much early in the game but later it'll become pretty common. The tension level also affects whether or not a chain will continue. If their portrait in the upper left shows them looking like , the chance of chaining is low. If they are literally on fire with BURNING SPIRIT, the chance of chaining is much higher. A party of BFFs at max tension will be chaining constantly.

There are also skills that increase the chance of chaining, I know Shulk has one.

Gamestop.com had it available not long ago. I picked it up for $50 in store last month so if yours is offering them for $25 and you have the spare cash I would definitely pick them up for resale later.

Okay, I picked this up again after a long delay (I stalled out at some point in Mechonis Field) and now I've gotten through the Core stuff. I just went into Bionis's Interior and wanted to ask some advice. I've skimmed a few things online while trying to avoid spoilers, and it looks like I can basically do this zone then either finish the game or grind away on levels and affinity and Colony 6 rebuilding. Is there a particular path I should be following here? Any useful endgame guides around if I want to do some more leveling before the big finale? Is there a point I should get through plot-wise before heading off to to the great endgame grind? Will it be obvious if I just keep playing?

When the game straight up asks you (in character!) if you want to do the final battle and not return to the rest of the game, select "no" and then make a save. Then go do the final battle. If you level up enough to tackle the endgame named enemies and sidequests you will breeze through the final fight since it's designed to be possible without a punishing grind and without a player doing all (or even most) of the sidequests. That might sap some of the gravitas. Beat it and then go do your post-game stuff by reloading that save.

You can do as much as you want to. Almost everything stays around forever - as long as a quest doesn't have a clock next to it it will always be there. So if you want to move on, feel free to since you can always come back later.

Tobias Grant posted:Can anyone give me some tips on how to use the other characters? My main party for my entire first playthough was Shulk, Carla, and Dunban, and I just can't figure out how to use characters like Melia and Riki very effectively. Melia's a magical nuke. Load her up with +Thunder gems and +Ether gems, first off. Her "summon" abilities store up buffs at first, but you can fire them off for an offensive spell by using her Talent Art (which is always useable, unlike other characters'). Her summons get dismissed on a last in, first out basis. Basically, here's what you do. Pick a buffing spell of your choice, I usually go with Summon Aqua or Wind. Then Summon Bolt and Summon Copy. Now you have 1 Aqua/Wind spirit and 2 Bolt Spirits. Use her Talent Art (middle button) to fire off those two Bolt Spirits, rinse, repeat. Note you can also use that Talent Art during a Chain attack and it'll count for any "color" during the combo. You can use her to Chain together ridiculous combos. She also has a healing spell that sacrifices some of her own HP to heal someone. Handy since she doesn't need her HP much anyway. She also has a Break/Topple combo that you should consider putting on her. The only other thing to watch out for is she'll draw agro like mad. Make sure she's with someone with some Agro+ gems (Dunban or Reyn work well). Rikki works a bit different. He's somewhat of a tank, and somewhat of a damage-dealer. He has stupidly high HP, and some great support abilities. Where he really shines is in his damage over time abilties, or DOTs. He gets Bleed, Burn, Poison, etc enducing abilities. What you want to do with him his load him up with Bleed/Burn/Poison+ gems and Ether+ gems, maybe some Def+ if you can spare the space. Unleash some of those DOT abilities during a Chain Attack, preferably at the end, and watch the damage rack up. He also gets a handy full-party heal spell, and he can give the party gauge a boost with "Happy Happy." Oh, and he can also Topple things without breaking them. Rikki's a little monster, is what I'm saying. He's great.

Melia doing a solo topple combo blew my mind, it's so useful but comes at the cost of two spells.

My one major issue is that the party leader is always the first in a chain attack. He's great to play as, but I want him at the end of a chain attack to get the boost on his spells.

At the same time being able to topple an enemy in the first step of a chain attack is amazing. I think Shulk, Melia, and Riki are the only three characters I really stuck with playing as during my playthrough.

Is Dunban the only one who really benefits from being naked/no gems? I'm in the 70's now, and it seems like everyone's stats (except Shulk for some reason) skyrocket when I link the "skill boost when no gems are equipped" art. I can't tell initially if that boost to Ether for Melia, for example, is better than +Thunder/+Ether gems or not. I've been running naked Dunban and no-gem Melia and have been melting same-level enemies, but I'm not sure if this is the min-max way of going about it.

I'm cruising through Mechonis Field right now playing as Melia and it's a surprising amount of fun, I got sick of the AI not knowing how to use her so I tried it. Summon Bolt then two other spirits, use her Talent Art twice, Summon Bolt, Summon Copy, Talent Art 3x. One thing I found is that you can pre-load commands with her, so while she's in a summoning animation you can select another Art and once she's out of the animation she'll automatically use the pre-selected Art.

My 10-hour-in review - One of the best rpgs ever made (within my top 20 at the very least), not just jrpgs, but rpgs as a whole. Everything impresses me about this game and thats coming from a guy who sort of really cant stand jrpgs. One of the remarkable things is they made the antagonists really loathsome and, sort of, frightening. There is a real sense of malice that you dont get from the common banana in the fruitbowl of jrpgs. Another thing I really like is that the npcs for the most part airnt just sign posts, theres a whole thought out scheme on how they relate. For the first time I remember I feel the urge to collect 5 monkey scrotums not just because it will give me magic stick, but because I want to see how the relations and stories change. An example is that little pompom kid in colony 6 who you make a book for because he lost his parents. I actually sort of choked up talking to him and set out right away to make sure the pictures in the book dont tell him to drown in a river. I'm at the point where the fat robot took away jujube away to eat him. I'm not really rushing to rescue the kid, instead doing some quests for the cave refugees. Will I be able to come back and finish them off after I do something mean to the fat robot that is voiced by the cave troll from the hobbit? Also is it generally worthwhile to come back and finish collectables or should I only bother to do them as I find them (in terms of the rewards they get, not my own personal asspergers satisfaction)? I also feel like I'm a little bit behind in terms of story progression for 10 hours in, or am I right on track? edit: sort of a technical question: My system struggles to run it on dolphin at times and I dont think it really should. i5 2.4 GHz processor 560ti geforce vid card 8GB ram I had to put the sound on LLE because it was making GBS threads in my ears and now whenever I enter a big battle or a boss battle the framerate dips and it starts stuttering. Are there any known tweaks for this game? MOVIE MAJICK fucked around with this message at 05:04 on Dec 21, 2012 |

I also feel like I'm a little bit behind in terms of story progression for 10 hours in, or am I right on track? You're taking your time, so right on track for that? There are two options: speed through the story, in which case you're behind, or DO EVERYTHING. I think the cave refugee quests expire after you take out the fat robot. If not then, soon after.

In almost every area you will just happen to pick up enough stuff as you wander around so I wouldn't worry about that. The rewards are certainly appropriate to the general level of the area, so they are only worth OCD value or for certain quests later on. There is a Xenoblade specific version of Dolphin you can get instead of the main trunk that might help you out, also. Also if you feel you are going too fast, just explore a bit and flesh out your map. The full map reveals for each area once you find all the landmarks, just so you know. Explore, and find more terrifying poo poo like Immovable Gonzalez.
