So I am not saving chat history in Gmail, but others are still getting offline chats from me. I firmly believe one should have to be online in order to witness the brilliance of my prose. I can't replicate it by playing around between my own (separate, run-on-different-browser) accounts, and am therefore blind on how to fix it. What sorcery is this?

I'm looking to buy one of those metal rulers that have a square cross-section. They're pretty solid. What are they called?

Are you sure they have a square cross section? Seems that would be excessively thin or tall.

Is there a way to secure checked luggage that will not piss off the TSA? My mother-in-law said she'd had some valuables stolen from her luggage, and it got me to thinking that it wouldn't be a bad idea to secure our luggage, but I'm leery of cheap-looking TSA locks.

If you're that concerned, I think shipping it would be the best option. The added expense may be worth the sense of security.

We are shipping some stuff, but I was wondering more for the future. I don't plan on getting anything expensive while I'm traveling (Christmas being the exception, but my wife's grandmother gave us shipping labels).

I hear that adding a starter pistol to your case will allow it to be classed as a shipping a firearm and so you get to use proper locks.

I've heard this also. I think they still don't let you lock them, but they watch them like a hawk since they don't want a gun going missing. I've heard that as a guard against your bags going missing though, not as a theft preventative.

After having Anaïs Mitchell's Hadestown recommended to me a couple of weeks ago, I'm checking out her other stuff and this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRpapEYxn5s is something I've heard before - definitely by her and not someone else.

Is it in a TV series or a film or something? It's driving me nuts.

Is there some kind of goon home studio/recording thread? I have a friend who does home recordings for multitracking fairly regularly but is currently limping along with an older Tascam. I'd like to get him something better (with less frustrations and preferably with some decent mixing/editing software).

Requirements:

1. Direct recording/connection to computer.

2. At least one input for his guitar.

3. Decent bundled software.

4. Under 400 bucks.

5. Headphone output.

MIDI not required mic input would be nice.

Home Recording Megathread

Based on those requirements his best bet might be to track down a used Mbox 2/Mbox 2 Pro with an included Pro Tools key. Not the newest hardware and it probably won't come with the newest version of Pro Tools, but even an older version like PT 8 will work just fine for that kind of need.

I did a quick search on Amazon and came up with essentially two sets of products, one from Avid and one from DigiDesign. Which did you mean?

Avid bought Digi a few years ago, so the Avid products (grey/silver) are the newer versions of the Digi (blue) ones. Either piece of hardware should be fine for your friend; I would guess that the older models are slightly more likely than the newer ones to come bundled with Pro Tools, since they date from the era when you had to own Digi hardware to run PT, but I'm sure you can find a good deal on a used bundle with either piece of hardware. I should also mention that the Pro model requires a FireWire port, while the regular Mbox 2 is USB.

So I applied for the Amazon Rewards Visa to see what kind of APR I could get and I ended up getting approved for a pretty lovely rate. I have no interest in using it but for some stupid reason it's locked in as my default card and even when I go to make an order I cant change the payment info. It will only let me select the rewards visa, anyone know an easy fix?

Pretty sure you can change your payment options in your account settings. Unless it's different when you have a reward visa.

Ask your carrier or possibly the staff at the airport. You may also just be shuttle bussed to your room.

I have a Motorola Defy that I've had since 2010. The earphone is busted and I can no longer hear calls unless I put them on loudspeaker. I've bought a new phone, but I wonder if it's possible to repair this old one. How much would it cost?

I'd never heard of Game Grumps before, but apparently it's come up in The Internet Critic Discussion Thread. As an aside, if you buy Platinum you can do forums searches on your own, as well as gain the ability to report and send/receive private messages.

How do I meet socialists in real life? I would love to meet passionate socialists and I would love to become active in causes that jive with my values but the label "socialist" can be broadly interpreted, and I'm nervous about joining some group, thinking its totally cool, and then getting shocked by some ringing endorsement of the North Korean regime (for example).

I've found the International Socialist Organization (https://www.internationalsocialist.org) but I'm not sure if they're legit or crazy or if there are better alternatives out there.

To simplify what I mean by my values, my ideal government would permit:
universal health care
unions; protections and rights for workers
a minimum income
racial and gender equality; LGBT rights
safe and reliable public transportation
comprehensive business and financial regulation

I reside in Austin, Texas.
