All of my top ten would include previous mentions, but I'd like to throw in the new Mors Principium Est album since it squeaked in just before the new year as it's pretty high on my list for the year:

A shitton of good albums came out in 2012, my top ten would probably be (in any order):

Spawn of Possession - Incurso
Sigh - In Somniphobia
Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity
Agalloch - Faustian Echoes
Krallice - Years Past Matter
Ihsahn - Eremita
Anaal Nathrakh - Vanitas
Panopticon - Kentucky
Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage
Enslaved - RIITIR

Definitely hard to choose though, with all that came out this year.

I'm thinking about going to the Inferno Metal Festival in Norway in March. I can stay in my friend's hotel room in downtown Oslo since he's there for work. Cheapest flight from San Francisco is $880 right now. Anyone ever been? How does it compare to some of the other big festivals? I want to someday go to Wacken or Tuska, so maybe I should wait for one of those massive outdoor ones.

I am not sure how it compares- other than I will say camping fests rule. But take a coat, for real. I was freezing in Norway in June. JUNE!

Also $880 is super cheap for plane tickets to Norway, so I say do it, unless another Euro fest has a better line up.

I would go based on plane ticket price and free accommodation alone. (Edit: and to see Behexen)

Wacken was insanely fun but it (and the 2 weeks backpacking around) cost a lot.

I've been to Inferno twice (2007 & 2008), and it's a pretty good festival. Remember that it's a club festival, and that the beer prices are mid/high-range by Norwegian standards. This means that at the venue you'll be paying around 70 NOK for 0,5l, which equals $12.5 or £7.8. As a result the Norwegians are usually piss-drunk long before midnight, while most of the foreigners tend to be rather sober.

To save on your pocket-money I'd recommend buying some cheap pisswater beer (Seidel, Borg, Pokal) for about 20 NOK a can, and drink it in your hotel before the shows or whenever you have some spare time between gigs. Also get some tax-free booze at the airport. Otherwise there are a few cheaper pubs in downtown Oslo, like Møllers (which is next door to the venue) and Rock In (a strictly hard rock/metal pub which is always packed for the festival), where you'll be paying maybe 40 NOK for a glass.

As a Norwegian I prefer going abroad for festivals, since I can usually make back most of the travel-cost on the comparably much cheaper accommodation, food, and drink in central Europe. Also I personally think that the Inferno lineup has been a bit rubbish in recent years, as well as being too close to Roadburn. At least the selection of bands at Inferno is nowhere near the awfulness of Wacken, and you won't have to deal with fifty thousand Germans pissing on your tent.

In the case of Ihsahn, Sigh, Agalloch, Krallice, and Anaal Nathrakh I felt like they were all "Ok" albums. I've been increasingly having this problem with new metal releases where when I hear a new album it just sounds like a worse version of their old stuff to me. Not to say they are straight up bad, I'm just not going to put them on a year-end list because they're not a good representation of what the bands can do to me.

I'm also aware this is how Dads listening to Dadrock happens

(I'm undecided on Enslaved, Panopticon seems to be getting a lot of hype but I think I need to listen to it again because it didn't really blow me away, haven't heard the rest)

My top albums for the year were definitely Be'lakor, Ne Obliviscaris, In Mourning, Gorod, and Hour of Penance. I like death metal. :frog:

Next year I have extremely high hopes for the new Vader, Amon Amarth, and Wintersun albums. I hope Time II is a step up from Time I, since I considered that a bit of a let down overall. Vader has literally never written or made anything bad, so I know I dont have to worry about them.
