Backflip slots is an aesthetic nightmare. I like Slotomania - a good variety of machines, a sense of overall progress, an attractive app, and you get enough free stuff to keep playing fairly regularly even on a losing streak.

No, I don't. It gives you free coins every four hours (I think it was every two when I played last, so it might be less manageable now), and it randomly gives out daily bonuses.

There's a Lite version with just the first two classes, and I think it doesn't go endless?

It's pretty alright, it reminds me a little of Desktop Dungeons, except without the mechanic of conserving exploration for health. Instead it's more along the lines of picking targets and choosing what exploration costs to pay (some doors cost health or money, arenas and bosses pop up that give big rewards but will cost a lot of HP to beat).

For example the first class, the paladin, gets bonuses vs. undead, and killing undead has a chance to power up your next attack. So you kill a skeleton for the chance at buffing your attack so you can kill that bat in one hit, thereby conserving hp.

It's fairly mindless, but it's got persistent upgrades and a bunch of different classes, but it lacks some of the decision making that makes a roguelike really good. You're also guaranteed to die due to attrition, and it's just about seeing how long you can go with the RNG and clever use of skills. At the very least it will keep me busy at work for a while.

On that note, does anyone have any recommendations for iOS roguelikes? I've tried looking into it a little bit, but I've never really followed iOS gaming.

Ideally, I'd like something that's a little more Shiren the Wanderer than Nethack; in either case, I'm looking for a straight roguelike rather than a game with roguelike elements.

Just for reference, I'd be playing on an iPad Mini.

There's not a ton of decent iOS roguelikes. And none are really much like Shiren the Wanderer, depending on what you mean by that. There's an upcoming one that looks like what you might want, but it's been in development forever: http://www.chronosoft.com/spirithunter.html

The better iOS roguelikes, made for the system so they're missing Nethack's 50 keys of input:

Sword of Fargoal (get to the bottom of the dungeon and get out, find one use items, all the standards except combat is automated)
100 Rogues (warning: a lot of people have horrendous bug issues with this one)
Zaga-33 (my favorite right now, it's a roguelike reduced down to its most efficient form)

That's about it I think for straight roguelikes? Every once in awhile there's a new one that pops into the thread, but doesn't last long due to being very unpolished with balance issues.

It sort of figures that right after I post that I'd get a daily bonus for 1500 coins and then go on a tear where I get up to 25k and gain 5 levels in the process. I can safely say I've never had that sort of luck playing this game before though, and I've been at it for a while.

I really want to like this game (freelancer nostalgia probably) but I feel like I'm missing some auto pilot option somewhere. After the first few story quests it seems every job is 3-4 galaxies away which is AGES of pointless clicking. Am I missing something or does the developer hate fun that much?

Yeah, the lack of multi-system autopilot didn't seem like a big deal at first, but it became quickly annoying as the quest objectives got farther and farther from the quest givers. I doubt I made it even a quarter of the way into GOF2's main storyline before giving up solely due to all the "fly completely across the star map, then come back" missions.

-while in the air, pressing gas or brake will actually rotate your car. Use this to stick landings instead of just holding down the gas all the time.
-Petrol is more like a time limit than a fuel. It goes down steadily no matter your throttle setting, even if you're coasting down a hill.
-Don't upgrade your engine too quickly compared to tyres and 4WD, you won't be able to deliver the power to the ground without spinning wheels.
-to farm money efficiently, I recommend buying as few upgrades as possible and no cars, just stages until you get The Moon. Because air time gives way more coins than anything else, The Moon is by far the best farming spot.

To the goon who made Take My Machete (can't remember who it was, and I don't have search)--I finished story mode of your game, but only because I wasn't going to feel right about my criticisms without finishing it.

There is possibly a good game in there, but fighting the controls really puts a damper on it. The directional buttons and machete button are too easy to miss: there should not be a spot of inaction between these buttons and/or the edge of the screen. The machete takes a half second too long to activate after being hit, so I think for half a second I didn't hit it and mash it again (also, this causes problems with the bomb aliens and the laser gun aliens). On the other hand, the inventory and special buttons are far too easy to accidentally hit. There were many times that I was trying to fire an arrow and activating those instead. Maybe get rid of the classic FPS facial health meter to make room for the buttons away from the player character. My final gripe in regards to the controls are that I have to cover my sprite to fire arrows, and often get hit with the space beam or the graboids because my finger is covering the sign that they're arriving.

The last point wouldn't be such an issue if the warning sound for either of those occurrences weren't completely drowned out by the music, whose volume level options are limited to an off/on toggle. Why is there no volume control slider?

As for the lucky spin, after having beaten the story mode, the only two prizes I got from the lucky spin were 10pts and free-spins. The chart says there are other prizes, but I doubt the veracity of that without them being displayed on the wheel or ever functionally coming up. It is possible that I simply had over twenty unlucky spins, but considering the other faults I think it's at best weighted worse than a casino.

Also, why do the sprite and health-gauge face stay the same no matter which character I choose? Bafflingly, these two don't resemble ANY of the selectable characters--they appear to be created by a different artist in a different style altogether.

I'm not trying to be hard on you. I probably wouldn't have said anything if it weren't for the feeling that there is the potential for a fun game in there. Or if these comments had been made by any of the reviewers on the App Store, but their comments are the general fluff and unhelpful criticism that seems to flourish there.

If you can get far enough on the freeway level, it's possible to get absurd amounts of coins using the race car. Once I figured out I could get millions of coins quick, all that was left was trying to get further in the stages. Couldn't really progress much, and retrying tracks from the start and trying not to die from something stupid on the way got real tedious. Extreme Road Trip 2 is still my favorite "rotate your side-view car" game.

Thanks for the feedback. I changed the controls so much over the course of development and these ended up pleasing most people (bar the inventory which I will address in a second!). I do however, think that it can be improved further. The machete activating slowly is probably due to the animation you are seeing upon hitting the attack button. What actually happens is that it sends out a small detector as soon as you press, so the animation is really just a visual indicator that you've tapped the button. It should happen fast enough to react with the detector being fired, but on older devices or if there is any slowdown it can appear to be laggy. I will try to fix it for the next update :) Not sure if I really want to move the specials buttons, I put them there so it was in easy reach of your finger when you are attacking (the stun ability is particularly helpful in some close situations.) The arrow firing should also work if you drag on either side of your character, you don't have to tap exactly on him. I might extend this range a bit further so a swipe on the side of the screen opposite to the character activates the bow.

The inventory is probably also going to get a look for the next update. The health and armor items are way too small to press in an intense situation, so perhaps having them larger than the rest of the inventory might be a way to go (I also need to check if they are activating on finger released or over, I think it may be a bug.) Bandages are also going to automatically be used when you are on extremely low HP. I'm still not 100% on this idea, but people have suggested it because how intense it can get sometimes.

You are right with the music, there should be a slider. I'll try and add one with the next update (I'm not really a great coder, so it will be a fun task!)

Lucky spin will be changing to be a bit more forgiving as well. A bad spin will result in 100 credits, while a "free spin" will net you three Alien Skulls instead of one. I'll take a look at the chances as well if it does seem a bit low.

The sprite/health gauge face are the same because you are playing the guy in the first cut-scene with the hat on, the "quiet one". You are basically tasked by the commando dude to get back the bands gear because he thinks they're too weak. They however mentor you in a few special abilities, based on which instrument they play. So essentially they're passing on some things they've learnt so you can use them against the Aliens.

And don't worry about being too harsh. I love criticism/feedback. It usually means I can get better at creating something everyone might one day enjoy if I know what people are thinking.

Seconding the moon thing--it's amazing for farming. Hill Climb is one of those surprisingly fun games, although there are a lot of really small, weird physics problems with it...
