Basically, a crazy guy took a tourist bus hostage and almost killed all the passengers with an automatic rifle. The whole event was a live broadcast. The city was in shock and glued to the TV seeing how bad and terrible the police in Manilla was in handling the situation. Then there's the sensitivity issue after the tragedy where people just go up to the bus and take photos for their face book wall and status. Which angered Hong Kongers even more and created a huge major back lash to this day :smith: Many overseas domestic workers from Philippines were afraid of losing the jobs from the racial back lash or afraid of going out to get mobbed :(

The only benefit is a much cheaper and easier time to get Philippines for a vacation.

Hey Imperialist Dog, you should come hang out in the China thread! http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3413886 . Two years ago, a Hong Kong tour group got shot up in Manila during a hostage situation on a bus (pictured). It was sad.

But guess where I'm going for my Chinese New Year vacation? Top tier trips to the Philippines are cheap as hell, even during the peakest of the peak season. Carry on, blacklist!

Not sure if this should be posted here or the "crazy political discussion" thread, but I got into an interesting argument last night on Twitter :suicide:
Mainland Chinese (and by extension, I guess, HK-ers) are absolutely obsessed with apologies. To take another recent example, the Chinese government has demanded since 2010 that the Norwegian government issue an official apology for the Peace Prize. Which is of course ridiculous, and completely impossible.

The latest update on that front is Yan Xuetong's suggestion that Norway take China's side in the Diaoyu island dispute to "make amends". That is, for our war crime of allowing a private foundation to issue a prize. Good luck with that.

I find it sort of telling that the CCP has never, to my knowledge, issued an official apology of any sort for the Great Leap Forward, or for the Cultural Revolution, or for any of the other numerous crimes it has committed against its own citizens. Apologies, to the CCP, imply loss of face and legitimacy. Which means their apology-extracting overtures amount to nothing more than a sort of fratboy hazing, meant to humiliate lesser nations without the leverage to stand up to them.

Edit: I guess I'm conflating ordinary citizens with the government here, so sorry about that.

Welp, time to get this thread back on track:

Shanghaiist posted:

Outrage at mainland mother who let son poop at Taiwan airport

Not the best way to improve cross strait relations. A mainland Chinese mother has attracted online outrage after photos emerged of her letting her infant son poop on the floor at Taiwan airport, less than 25 metres away from a toilet.

The photo, published by NowNews, was taken by a Taiwanese tour guide. It shows the woman having spread out paper for the child to poop on, but the photographer said a toilet was less than a minute's walk away.

One Taiwanese blogger, quoted by the SCMP, said: "There aren't enough pubic toilets in China and the ones they do have are usually dirty. This might explain mainlanders' poor hygiene habits." While this statement, which smacks more than a little of xenophobia, might be true of public toilets in Chinese cities, toilets in Chinese airports are nearly always perfectly clean and hygienic.

On Weibo, Chinese netizens hung their heads in shame at their compatriot's actions. "This is so embarrassing", said one Chinese blogger.

A boy peeing out of the window of a bus in Xiamen late last year was later discovered to be an autistic, musical genius. Similar revelations seem less likely in this case.

Frankly the fact that she put down paper (and presumably cleaned up after her son) are amazing. Truly China is making great strides in the development of 文明* society! :china:

*The propaganda buzzword of the year. It means "cultured" and every city in interior China has slogans plastered everywhere declaring the local city to be a 文明 city and urging the people to be more 文明. It's a little stronger than "cultured" in the English language because the Chinese see themselves as extremely cultured and it's a pretty important ideal to educated Chinese.

China Megathread: Street-making GBS threads and baby formula discussion zone :china:

When I worked at the Shanghai EXPO, I had several encounters with visitors that attempted to make their kids poo poo in the trash-cans inside the pavilion. When I pointed out that the toilet was literally just outside our pavilion, a lot of them were all like "well he/she's gotta go so bad!!" ("他太急了!"), like they could see nothing indecent about the whole thing.

I'll freely admit I was spouting the standard classist bullshit about suzhi and the countryside unironically for about a year after that.

Local parents in Hong Kong can hardly buy baby formula milk powder in drugstores and supermarkets, as smugglers from mainland China storm to this tiny city to buy milk powder and resell for huge profits in China. Many retailers stockpiled milk powder and are reluctant to sell to local parents as the shops can sell their stocks in big cartons to mainland smuggler for huge profits. Countries like Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand exercise rationed sale to tourist buyers from China for milk powder but the Hong Kong government simply frame the situation as a matter of free trade and refuse to exercise law which is already there to stop cross-border smuggling. We request for international support and assistance as babies in Hong Kong will face malnutrition very soon. Emptyin

Hong Kong people should just start to go to another nearby country that's even more uptight than they are (Japan?) and buy up all the formula there to compensate.

Hong Kong's birth rate is actually lower than Japan's, once you take out babies born to two non-permanent resident parents, who tend not to stay in the territory.

Because families live in shoeboxes here, make an average of 19k a month and each kid costs approximately nine gajillion dollars in baby formula, pre pre school, pre school, kindergarten admissions counseling, kindergarten interview tutoring, kindergarten tuition, then fourteen years of exam prep in the form of six zillion hours of tutoring.

Also to earn that 19k a month, both parents have to work at least 50 hours a week, six days a week.

But people are still scared of Japanese radiation fears, so Japan is out of the question. None the less, we already do buy poo poo from overseas. There is a strong parallel import business. For a while my relatives were having fancy USDA approved organic baby formula from Wisconsin  The families with more disposable income already buy formula from New Zealand or where ever. Sometimes they cross the border themselves and cave in to the hoarders and pay 4 times the retail price. That's the biggest thing nowadays as gifts, more so than expensive booze and cars. Tins and tins of milk powder.

The middle class families and poorer ones? If they can't lactate, they are screwed. Recently, there are random facebook groups popping up about a casual "milk bank". Which is great but there is one condition: Mothers must feed the babies on the spot because sometimes ladies would use it as a "milk mask" or re sell things :smith:

LimburgLimbo posted:

God dammit, that's China and their communist red passports, they do have visa free travel to Iran and Cuba. Hongers can freely travel to Japan and other countries easily, but not Iran. To many Hongers, Japan is the ideal short holiday. Great food, clothes, and of course anime and video games. Many many Japanese companies set up shop in Hong Kong back in the 60's. So people here are mostly fond of Japan and the city went on a manhunt when 2 Japanese tourists were randomly assaulted during the car flipping ordeal.

Living condition is too crowded (see the ranting post form previous page for reasons).

Take the residential apartment you see on Hong Kong TV shows or movies, divide the space by ten. That's the actual living space normal Hong Kongers inhabit.

How can people even be sure they are buying genuine formula even if they go to Hong Kong? It can't be that hard to fake the packaging and the profit margin on selling fake must be enormous.

Chinese International students over seas claimed to have paid for their studies by selling baby formula :wtc:

Everything is relatively cheap in Hong Kong, except for housing. There is a massive waiting list to apply for government subsided ownership, and the average wait is 7 years. So lots of middle class kids or people with a bit more money apply for one once they hit 18 years old. In the past 10 years, there have been major land developments for private luxury residences and rich mainland Chinese have become a target market. So with a dire housing situation in Hong Kong, the perception of lack of basic goods, and the combination of Beijing controlled politics:

perhaps seeing kids poo poo on the street will make a lot of people snap and lose their poo poo. Which means a bigger crack down and political pressure from Beijing.

Blood nosed provided text, here are some pictures. Michael Wolf is one of my favourite photographers and he is good at capturing that feeling of the "HK Grind". One of his project is "100 x 100" where he just takes pictures of people living in low income government rental housing. They might look like PRO PRC Lao Wai or some old grandpa/grandma but living in small quarters takes a toll on their mind. Friend of mine is a social worker and has to deal with old people going ballistic and chopping their neighbours with a Chinese vegetable knife. Think angry grandpa with a cleaver instead of a shot gun :stare:

My best attempt (correct me please):

Everyone pay attention!!!!! Even HK-bought milk powder can be fake! Today my sister opened a can of milk powder! She discovered it contained less powder than usual! She talked to me after that! I compared it to another freshly opened can and it really contained much less! And then I tried tasting it! And it really was fake! Really sweet! The milk taste was barely there! Really weak! And the powder was white! [No idea what this means]! Deadly! Next time I'm going to the drugstore to get it! My mom knows how to order good formula! Really scary

God that was annoying to translate. Sorry for any mistakes.
