After all of you have arrived, along with Kitsune Kyubi (though Fuyuko is, blessedly, absent), Mirumoto Dai stands.

"Thank you all for coming...I understand that the circumstances of my invitation must seem suspicious, and I wish to assure you that I have only the most honorable of intentions here." He begins to pace.
"Over the next few days you may see and hear things that seem strange, and I do not ask any of you to go against your conscience. However, due to the circumstances at hand, I am not at liberty to disclose to all of you the truth of what is to come, at least, not yet. I must ask that you trust me, and trust that we, the Dragon, have not taken leave of our senses nor are we engaging in any dishonorable behavior. All will be explained in ti--"

It is at this moment that Mirumoto Dai trips over something unseen, and, with a surprised yelp, tumbles headlong out of the tower. A moment later, there is a sickening crunch from below, and before you realize it, all Jigoku breaks loose.

Edit: Cirno I'm assuming Asano was present for this as well, I just wanted to get it out there.

Itaru blinked for a moment, but just a moment as he immediately began to try and spot the cause of their host's fall and also for anyone else present. The Crane and the Kitsune had known this was happening, but no one else seemed present at first...which meant that unless Mirumoto Dai had told someone else those two and the current group present were the prime suspects.

Moshi Haruka

At first, Haruka is unable to react; despite her typical composure, someone suddenly dying (or at least seeming to) right in front of her is shocking even to her. After a few seconds, though, she begins running down the stairs of the tower, to see if he somehow survived the fall.

No roll, unless it requires Athletics to get downstairs quickly I guess.

Togashi Win

Togashi once said that there were no accidents, only steps in fulfilling a destiny. He said a lot of things, and Win wishes he had not been daydreaming when it happened. He shakes it off, coming to as if out of a doze, and wills the energies in his mind and body through the elaborate wolf tattooed down his arm. He snuffs the air, not unlike an animal. Scrambling forward in a quick shuffle, he casts the room for strange scents. He would mark them, and mark them very well.

There was nobody else in the room other than the six of you and Kitsune Kyubi--and the late Mirumoto Dai, of course. No out of place scents, either. By all appearances, this is nothing more than a tragic accident...

Of course, convincing the Dragon guards who are already at the gate of the tower when Haruka reaches the bottom, or the Scorpion bushi who have reacted quickly as well, may be another matter entirely. Worst of all is the sight of Shosuro Shizuka and Mirumoto Tarou emerging from the castle proper, a frown crossing Tarou's features. Shizuka's expression is, of course, entirely unreadable thanks to her mask.

"How strange," she observes in a quiet voice which somehow still manages to carry across the courtyard. "A suicide? Or a murder? And so soon after my arrival...I wonder, Tarou-san, should I be concerned?" Her tone is light, almost amused, but there is a definite threat behind her words.

"We shall of course get to the bottom of this at once," Tarou stammers. "Any witnesses shall be questioned, and the cause of this...this tragedy..." He looks shaken by the loss of his relative, and Shizuka's presence definitely isn't making it any easier for him.

Dai was there one second. Gone the next. Such is the fleeting nature of life, and Daitomu can not begin to contain himself at the absurdity of it. Laughter escapes as a snorting noise, despite his best efforts to keep his lips clamped shut.

Once he regains himself, Daitomu can only stare at the body below and shake his head. "When the Lords of Death come looking for you, there is no tower high enough to escape them." He says, following it with a heavy sigh. "Trust Me, he says, before plummeting to his death."

Daitomu knew better than to try and run, so simply waited there for the guards and inquisitor to arrive atop the tower. Perhaps they too, would try to fly.

"I fear you may be the only one to see such humour Moto-san. You may do well to compose yourself amongst the mourners and also in the presence of Shosuro-Sama, when she comes to investigate this suspicious occurrence. Brevity might be mistaken for a sign of guilt." Itaru said in a somewhat bland and detached voice. No signs of a third party and no obvious causes. He couldn't help but wonder if there was magic or some similar otherworldly foul-play at work here. The coincidence was too great...especially with what Mirumoto Dai had been saying. Itaru shook his head in slight annoyance. The Deathpriest did not understand, should they be found guilty then their actual guilt mattered little. Besides why else did one laugh except when something was humorous to them? It was a question better put to the monk he supposed. There seemed little point debating it until Shosuro Shizuka arrived, which by his estimates would be soon. After glancing to the courtyard to take measure of the pace of those coming to the scene Itaru looked quizzically at Asano, he was also Lion and would probably think on a closer line to Itaru.

Moshi Haruka

At the base of the tower, the first thing Haruka notices is that guards are already present. The second is Dai's body; there isn't any question about it, he's dead. Turning and bowing low to Tarou, she attempts to explain. "M-Mirumoto-sama, I, my sincerest apologies. Your cousin wished to speak to us about something, and called us to meet him here. However, when he began to speak to us, he tripped over something and fell. I don't know what caused it, though earlier today I was assisting Doji-san I found signs of a spirit of Sakkaku lurking on the premises. Unfortunately, Agasha-sama was not on the premises, so I could not seek her assistance on the matter."

She remains bowed after speaking, lamenting the situation. Despite the truth of her words, the difficulties before them would be difficult to overcome. As both she and Kyubi were suspects, them relaying the words of the kami on the matter would likely be dismissed as lying to save face. However, even if Arashi were to testify, magically-acquired evidence was technically inadmissible; unless Tarou didn't care about that, the matter simply came down to testimony. And "an evil spirit killed him" was not particularly convincing testimony.

Sincerity 4k3 for saying that we're, you know, not guilty, basically. As for exp, still deciding what to spend it on. Probably saving it, unless I can purchase Sage.

You're all escorted to the base of the tower by the guards momentarily, those who had not already come down. Mirumoto Tarou is clearly upset, but speaks without allowing it to show in his voice.

"Please do not speak further at this time," he begins, glancing at Haruka. "You will have an opportunity to explain what happened, but separately, individually. For the time being, you will each be escorted to your quarters here, where you will remain until such time as we are prepared to hear your testimony, after which we will be returning you to your quarters. I apologize for the inconvenience this causes you, my honored guests, but I must be certain of this, as I am sure you can understand."

He takes a deep breath before continuing.

"None of you are being accused of any wrongdoing at this time. Until we have a firmer grasp on the situation, we simply wish to ensure that nobody is able to contaminate the testimony that may be provided."

Shizuka steps forward. "Mirumoto-sama, may I offer my services in assisting with collecting testimony? It would allow you to proceed with more haste and allow your guests to resume their normal routines that much sooner..."

Tarou hesitates, then nods. "I cannot think of any good reason to refuse," he answers.

At this point, each of you is escorted to your quarters. To expedite things, I'd like to ask everyone to give their testimony about the events in the tower, which will be taken to be what you tell either Tarou or Shizuka, when you are asked to testify. Haruka, Itaru, and Daitomu will be questioned by Shizuka, and the rest by Tarou.

Ikoma Asano

If I read this right, we essentially just post as if we were giving our testimony, right? Also, did Asano see anything with his admittingly mediocre investigation roll?

When Tarou comes to take Asano's testimony, the young Lion's eyes glimmer with faint moisture.

"Mirumoto-san. I am sorry for the loss of your cousin. If you desire it, I can send word and have omoidasu come for the funeral. I will happily give you the full testimony that I know to assist with such a tragedy. Your honorable cousin had called us to the tower earlier today, though why I was not sure. I thought it possible he simply wished to show us the magnificent view. I had spent much of that day either playing Go or trading poetry with lady Doji-san, to help her with her loss of her heirloom comb. Moshi-san was there as well with Doji-sama, and spoke of uncovering a trickster spirit about the castle. When I was done speaking to Doji-san, I left to meet with your honorable cousin. When I and the others had arrived, he seemed agitated or excited about something. He spoke with us about the honor of the Dragon, and the need to act on good conscience. I believe it is possible he merely wished to impress on us Dragon honor and serve as an example of courtesy, as the Scorpion had just arrived, and our future guests soon to come, before the backdrop of your lands. He walked as he spoke, and, tragically, however, he seemed to lose his balance or falter by some means, and fell off the side of the tower. Knowing it was not my place to investigate and that your own guard would handle it proficiently, as well as knowing that I would be called to give testimony, I waited at the top of the tower after the tragedy, that I may come here to speak to you. Moshi-san, I believe it was, ran for the stairs, in hopes of being able to still heal him. You and lady Shosuro-san emerged at this time, and I awaited on the tower until I was retrieved."

Asano gives a bow. "I hope my testimony is of worth and help to your investigations, Mirumoto-san."

Moshi Haruka

As requested, Haruka says nothing after she is asked and the others are brought down, merely nodding at his request. Her saying anything more would only hurt her, and the others, in the future. She allows herself to be led to her quarters without resistance or complaint; that would likewise only further implicate her, and physical resistance would not likely be effective for her anyway.

In her room, she sits quietly until Shizuka arrives. She wishes that the Scorpion were not the one interviewing her; she doesn't trust the woman, and she believes her direct testimony would hold more weight with Tarou than it being delivered secondhand would, even if the Shosuro didn't alter it at all. Though she had her suspicions; she didn't know why, exactly, but as there was no evidence here the only thing deciding this was testimony, and half of it going through the Infiltrator gives her significant power.

Despite this, she doesn't allow anything but calmness to show when Shizuka actually arrives. After the proper greetings are exchanged, she begins her testimony. "Earlier today, Mirumoto Dai-sama asked me and the others to meet him atop the watchtower. He didn't say why at the time, though afterward he spoke to <lastname> Kenji-san, one of the guards at the front gate." She pauses, to take a breath and to make sure she has everything in order. "When we arrived at the tower, Mirumoto-sama was already there, waiting for us. He seemed nervous, which was strange considering his usual demeanor; I do not know if it was the meeting or other things on his mind that caused him to fret so. Before he could tell us why we were called there, though, he tripped over something and fell through the window. I ran down to the bottom of the tower, to see if he might have survived, though even if he had I would not have been much aid; healing is not an art commonly practiced by the Moshi.

"I do not know for sure why he fell, as I saw nothing there that would have caused it. However, as I said earlier, I have reason to believe that it was a mujina, a spirit from Sakkaku. Before the meeting with Mirumoto-sama, Doji-san came to me and the others about a family comb of hers, claiming that it and other items from around the mansion had been going missing. While at first I suspected a thief, after investigating her room I found evidence of the spirit's influence. It had thrown her comb into a stream, and probably likewise hid or disposed of the other things it had taken. After discovering this, I went to tell Mirumoto Tarou-sama and Agasha-sama, the former so he could be aware of the issue and the latter because she was the only one who would be able to deal with it; my I only have basic control over air and fire, the spirits of other realms are beyond me. However, neither of them were available, Mirumoto-sama being in his meeting with you, Shosuro-sama, and Agasha-sama being out finding herbs she had lost, I assume to the very spirit I sought to warn her about. At the time, though, I was not particularly worried; mujina rarely commit more than petty trickery, such as moving one's belongings or, at the most, pulling one's hair. My primary concern was that it would somehow interfere with Chihiro-san's wedding arrangements or Mirumoto-sama's meeting with you. Had I known what it would later do..." Haruka pauses again; despite there having been nothing she could have done to stop the creature, and her having no reason to suspect it being capable of such a thing (she doubts it even knew what its actions would cause), she feels somewhat responsible for Dai's death.

"...The only others who are aware of the mujina's presence, I believe, are Doji-san, Ikoma-san and Kitsune-san, who were with me when I discovered it, and the servants I met when seeking Mirumoto-sama and Agasha-sama; I had intended to inform Agasha-sama of it the moment she arrived, so it didn't seem necessary or wise to make all the others worry. If any of the others heard me when I spoke to you and Mirumoto-sama, I sincerely apologize for contaminating their testimonies. I hope that I have been of some help to you." She bows again as the testimony is finished and the Shosuro leaves.

Haruka knows that magical evidence is not admissible; however, besides being the truth, her talk of the mujina actually was not along those lines. Rather, she was trying to establish its existence based on evidence and testimony from prior to the event, as well as strengthen her own testimony. She was not skilled in the ways of deception, but she knew that the more the others said the same she did the stronger her words seemed. Even if Shizuka and Tarou didn't believe that the mujina was the cause, the idea was in their minds, and her testimony matched the word of several other people, including one who wasn't at the incident at all. At the least, there was little reason to believe that she was the one responsible; she had no reason to commit such an action, and it was hard to believe that a one-armed girl of nineteen could shove someone of Dai's size like that. And, of course, it was the truth.

Despite all this, she still feels nervous; Mirumoto may not believe her testimony, and she still did not trust Shizuka to not alter it somehow. Reaching around through her belongings, she pulls out a bowl, and then three coins. While many dismissed divination as "peasant magic", her teacher saw fit to make sure she knew the art. Some knowledge of what's to come will hopefully put her at ease, if only a little. Gripping the kawaru tightly in her hand, she sits in thought for some time, then casts them into the bowl.

Again, Sincerity 4k3 to convince Shizuka that the truth is, well, the truth. Also, Divination 5k4, let's get a glimpse of what's in store for us. Also wow, that ended up being a lot longer than intended; I basically just sat here and typed for a while and didn't realize how big it was getting. I should get some sleep.

Matsu Itaru was calm and collected under what he perceived would likely be the piercing gaze of Shosuro Shizuka. He had wondered for a moment why she had singled out himself as well as Haruka and Daitomu, but the realised they were the three that had spoken. There might be other connections as well that only Shizuka was aware of. Still he had done nothing wrong and spoke calmly and confidently as he recounted the events.

"The Mirumoto-Sama had asked us to meet him in this place just before his death. He seemed concerned about something and was reassuring us that nothing dishonourable would happen, yet before he could explain further he appeared to slip and fall from the tower to his...unfortunate death. The happening was most disturbing and I tried to see if I could find any traces of wrong-doings, but I did not notice anyone else in the tower except for those he had invited. Furthermore I could see no signs of anything that would have caused Mirumoto Dai to trip...or fall, I am unsure which, to his death in that way. The circumstances seem strange and suspicious, but I fear if something or someone is behind it that it is beyond my means to discern."

Itaru paused for a moment, then remembered something and decided it would be best not to be seen to be hiding anything. "Oh, although you possibly overheard it, the Moto-San seemed to find something about circumstances of the death to be amusing. He is a Death Priest and this might go some way to explaining why, but I did caution him that it might be seen improper and possibly a sign that he was associated with the accident. The Moto-San did not seem to find it suspicious as I did however and replied he did not think there was guilt to be assigned. I would not know of what to make of such a thing, I am only a Bushi after all." He said with a small amount of humble self-deprecation.

I had not spent any significant time with any of them before, a word in passing or dining in common company here and there, so I thought his selection somewhat odd, but payed it no mind. He left to confer with a guard, I believe, but by then my attention was back to observing Fuyuko fling accusations."

"I suppose I was expecting some deep intellectual discussion. A group with surely mixed opinions about any topic, brought in private before a senior adviser to Tarao-san? I thought I would clear my head with meditation or sleep, and sleep won that battle. I retired to my quarters and rested, until shortly before the time of the meeting."

"Dai-san had barely begun speaking. Who builds towers such without at least a low wall? He began to speak of trust, and praising the honor of his clan. Now I am not one to sit still, but that place was dangerous, and I kept myself seated. Dai-san was walking about, as if his feet were planted firmly on the earth, and then, all of a sudden, woosh."

Daitomu shakes his head. "I wish there was someone to blame, but from my vantage, he tripped on his own feet. Nobody was near him, and he was going somewhere with his speech. If it was suicide, I would think he would at least get his final words out."

"It is clear both from your testimonies and the investigations of my men that foul play was not the cause of my cousin's death. You are all cleared of suspicion, and have my most sincere apologies for holding you until we could be certain. This is clearly a simple tragic accident, nothing more."

As Tarou finishes, Shizuka straightens, shaking her head.

"I'm afraid, Mirumoto-sama, that while I agree with the first part of your assessment--that Mirumoto Dai's death was a tragic accident--I cannot agree that it was nothing more than that. Both Moshi Haruka and Moto Daitomu referred to a guard, Mirumoto Kenji by name, in their testimonies, and the matter for which Dai-san had assembled such a...diverse...group is still unclear." She pauses, glancing at the lot of you for a moment. "Not, of course, that I suspect that you are guilty of any conspiracy. However, there is certainly much suspicious about the circumstances surrounding the man's death, if not the death itself. I should very much like to speak to this guard, Kenji, if I may."

While the monk chats with the others, Haruka sits in thought. She wonders what the Scorpion's game is; the Infiltrator must have some reason for what she's doing. She also worries about the fate of the others, and of Kenji. She mentioned him for the same reason she brought up the others who knew of the mujina, so that her testimony had more people to collaborate it. However, now she fears that she may have pulled him into something dangerous, as well as somehow hurt herself and the others. Was Dai planning some conspiracy? Had they been pulled into something beyond all of them?

She doesn't voice any of this, though, of course. "My time here has also been rather pleasant; I have no history here myself, as until a few years ago I had spent my whole life in the Centipede's lands, but the scenery has been spectacular, and the people kind." She thinks back to her home; until ten years ago, contact with the outside world was rare; the rest of the Empire left the Centipede alone, and both sides were content with the arrangement. Things had changed so much.

Shizuka regards Tekre. "That's quite a canny observation, though I think grasping at straws. It is most likely that if the responsibility for Dai-san's death is to be laid at the feet of any entity, it would be the mujina Haruka-san mentioned. The real question is what Dai-san wanted to gather you all in such a place for. I mean no disrespect, nor to dishonor one departed from this realm, but I can think of very few reasons for the timing and nature of his request so soon after I, a known Inquisitor, arrived. To be fair he held little love for the emperor or his regime but he had not intended to commit any treason and his superiors had not even mentioned it to him as well. Perhaps Asano would know more on the matter. Now was hardly the time to ask though.

Wait, something is wrong.
Win

"In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true," Win says plainly. "So Togashi spoke and so I believe. Could this have been a simple accident? A turning of destiny on the great wheel of all things? In bringing light to the darkness, shadows are created. Shadows can resemble many things, but they are as nothing but for the passing of the light that vainly seeks to banish the dark."

The flustered servant returns just after Win finishes speaking, before anyone can respond. He bows cringingly and repeatedly, as if he fears punishment for bringing bad news.

"The guard Mirumoto Kenji is nowhere to be found, my lord! He was last seen several hours ago, when he was relieved of his shift at the gates."

Shizuka sighs. "Tarou-sama, I'm afraid I can't but think that this points to some fairly unpleasant implications. Would you care to offer some possible explanation?"

Tarou frowns, but then nods as if in understanding. "I believe I can. I had asked Dai to see to it that our guests would be advised of your presence here--strictly to ensure that there were no unexpected surprises, of course. This negotiation has been a delicate one, and I mean no offense when I say that my daughter's potential groom arriving to the unexpected presence of an Inquisitor could have been taken quite the wrong way. Evidently, the method Dai used to fulfil my request was to send Kenji, presumably due to the absence of our shugenja, Agasha Arashi, at the time."

Shizuka shakes her head slowly. "Such it is to be in my position that one can never expect to be welcome anywhere she goes...and yet, you must understand what this looks like to me. However, I will do my best to overlook the irregularity of all of this, since I did not come here to seek treason."

Togashi Win

"May I visit the man's quarters?" Win asks calmly. "I may be of some assistance, but time is of the essence."

Tarou raises an eyebrow.

"A most unusual request. I can see no harm in it, however." He beckons for a servant, who leads you to a small, spartan chamber, in the guard barracks.

Win sets to work, beginning to track the man by scent. He takes it in quickly, then begins to track the path as the fellow headed through the place.

Moshi Haruka

Even before the last bit of conversation, Haruka had begun wondering if her suspicions of the Shosuro were unfounded. Thus far she had, despite what Haruka expected, behaved in an honorable and forthright manner. She seemed to simply be doing her duty, even if her duty was rather unpleasant business for the false Emperor. Suspecting her simply because of her clan somehow seemed wrong. However, the Scorpion deliberately invited suspicion upon themselves, a practice that confused Haruka greatly. Deceit and lies were dishonorable, but she could see a reason for them; telling everyone that you were deceitful served no discernible purpose.

These thoughts and others swirling through her mind, she decides to remain silent for the time being. She merely sits, head bowed slightly, waiting for new information or a declaration to be made.

Basically, until something happens Haruka doesn't have much to say at the moment. When it gets close to sunset she's going to ask to go outside to pray, though, if something hasn't happened before that.

You are able to track his path to the stables, and from there--fainter, mixed with horse--out the front gate. Wherever he went, he hasn't returned.

Everyone

Agasha Arashi enters the room where you're all discussing. She looks upset. "Dai-san?" she asks. Tarou shakes his head.

"drat," Arashi sighs. "How?"

Moto Daitomu

"Is the task Kenji was sent on the concern, here, or that he has not returned?" Daitomu asks, not knowing the surrounding area well. "He may not know of what happened to Dai-san, and return on his own any time."
