The face buttons were mostly okay, though I forget what the deal was with that button marked "M" at the bottom center, I think it wasn't mappable for some reason. Anyway I had the Sidewinder for a few months until it stopped working for some reason. I figured I'd go buy another one, since as you said, this was the early days of emulation and there weren't a lot of other options. I went to the store and found it had been phased out in favor of this thing: What the hell 90s.

So I never knew these existed, maybe you didn't either but the entire BS Zelda: Legend of the Stone Tablets is translated and really fun to play http://bszelda.zeldalegends.net/bszelda.shtml They get around the whole audio broadcast thing by having text at the bottom of the screen which will tell you what they were saying. It does some really interesting things while playing such as randomly giving you unlimited arrows, enemies will always drop rupees and one time my avatar was making GBS threads fairies out. It plays unlike any other Zelda in that it gives you some random items to start with and has a goal you must get to so like you start with a bottle with a fairy, bombs, boomerang and the ocarina. Then you're off to find the other stuff on your own.

loving angled D-pads, man. I'm pretty sure I still have one of these: hanging around somewhere (from late 90's / early 00's) and it never felt 'right'. Hell of a lot better than KB for emulation, though.

Does anyone know if there's something specific that the larger NES model would be capable of that the 60-pin would NOT be capable of, or is the 60-pin board+adapter, assuming it boots, theoretically sufficient?

Consoles becoming yellow over time is not due to smoking near it. It's the plastic oxidizing over time. Speaking of crummy console quality, what's the most efficient way to clean a whole Mega Drive? I bought one some time ago and it's covered in a thin layer of gooey solution of greasy crud. I want to pick it apart and wash the shell with dish soap, it's that disgusting.

My PowerPak turns on every single time in my AV Famicom using an adapter; even when actual NES games will not. A few weeks ago I had asked everyone here why my copy of Mega Man 2 works perfectly in my toaster but won't work in my AV Famicom with the adapter. No one really knew. I seem to recall someone was talking about a set of game bits that were supposedly made of a stronger material than the normal ones, so they'd last a lot longer. Does anyone remember if this was a thing and where to get them? Also, I wanted to do a quick run of the pawn shops around the city today, but it ended up being utterly freezing out to the point where I just wanted to stay inside and browse ebay instead. I'm sure there's a joke to be made there about first-world retrogaming problems. Stoomie posted:Are lovely sports games desirable as donors for anything? Well, this is fun. Ordered 25 Universal Game Cases from a Canadian distributor (the U.S. ones charge more on shipping than on the product itself and would have been way too expensive) and just got them today. Turns out there's a variation on the UGCs that doesn't have the outer sleeve to slip box art into.

^^^^^^^^^ Haha is that Ultraman? Speaking of 60-72 pin converters, it took me foreverrrr to get a hold of one. So long in fact, that looking back on it it would have probably been easier and maybe cheaper to fork out the $50+ on ebay. I got borderline obsessed with looking at NES launch titles both in person and online for the drat adapter. Every shop or flea market I'd go to I would catch myself comparing weights or trying to look and see the subtle pin difference. After almost countless attempts and disappointment, one fateful day at Goodwill finally turned everything around. It was a copy of Excitebike that was in their glass display case priced very fairly at $3. I got home, took out those 5 screws in record time, and BOOYEAH saw that big rear end converter and proceeded to celebrate playing one half of my entire Famicom game collection: Alien 3.

I don't know if it's a thing or not, but I have a copy of Jak II that was made with half the game missing. You get to a platforming section and you go up on these floating rocks, and the rock just keeps going and going and you just enter this void. At this point you can't go back and you can only die by falling, but it puts you back at the checkpoint so you can't progress any further. Now I know it's the disc because I bought another copy of Jak II and got past that point in the game. However upon putting my original disc back with the updated save the area I'm in is an empty flat plane room that goes on forever. I will literally run forever on the flat plane and nothing is there, you even won't hit a wall.
