There's an interesting underground psychedelic trend happening right now, and it's not purely nostalgia based; some of it employs modern elements and unique, original approaches. My current favorite is the highly obscure Morgan Delt, whose debut album "Psychic Death Hole" was released two months ago (to zero fanfare) on bandcamp:

http://morgandelt.bandcamp.com/album/psychic-death-hole

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFfetBuR5QM

This is a great psych track by Smiles And Frowns, from their self-titled debut:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIZ_0g1WExE

A more conventional rising star of the genre is Netherland artist Jacco Gardner:

This thread is for sharing any good psychedelic finds you may have...found. So please do!

To clarify, do you want this to be a thread just for fairly new psychedelic music?

I mean posting stuff like Pink Floyd that everyone's heard of wouldn't be very interesting but there are plenty of older obscure/foreign psychedelic acts that are gems.

Backing this recommendation, just check this poo poo out, The Galaxial Pharmaceutical and The Mello Hippo Disco Show. They were my first proper, pure psych band, and I could say the last some may ever need. Gaz Cobain and Brian Dougans make some of the most cooky, introspective or bubble psych rock you can find.

They also do collab work, like they did with Oasis on a remix of Falling Down, which I would easily put in the top five things Oasis released.

Those Morgan Delt tracks are really really good. I just purchased a digital copy of his album thanks to this thread.

Here are some nice psychedelic things I've run into over the last few years:

Sun City Girls have a fuckload of releases and I haven't heard most of them but Torch of the Mystics is cool and I guess also their most popular album.

I'm not big on the latest Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound album but the two previous ones, Ekranoplan and When Sweet Sleep Returned are insanely good

Some people consider Shinki Chen the Japanese equivalent of Jimi Hendrix. Not sure if I agree but he did release some sweet jams under his own name as well as part of the awesomely named Speed, Glue & Shinki power trio

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqMacsZO_08

The People's Temple. I don't actually know anything about this band but Sons of Stone is a neat album

Ozric Tentacles deserve a mention in this thread :http://youtu.be/UXAaDqPl7oY

quote:

Ozric Tentacles combine funk, psychedelic rock, space rock, and others, in an imaginative fusion dominated by synthesisers and progressive guitar playing, reminiscent of Steve Hillage's work. The bass shines through the blending, swirling music, laying an anchor for some seriously funky vibes.

My personal favorite has always been the Bevis Frond : http://youtu.be/HGeOeFHIfkA

quote:

The Bevis Frond is Londoner Nick Saloman, an artist of singular vision whose staunch devotion to the spirit of vintage psychedelia has yielded a shelf full of unmistakably '60s-derived albums. But there's more to the Bevis Frond's extensive catalogue than mere hippie revival. The singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist's twisted pop tunes, reflective acoustic excursions and extended guitar freakouts carry a quirkily personal edge and a distinctive melodic sensibility that raises them well above mere stylistic fetishism. Increasingly, his songs have found their way into the repertoires of American indie-rockers (most reliably Mary Lou Lord), and that has increased his profile even among those daunted by the prospect of a substantial oeuvre.

Do you find something comical about my appearance when I'm driving my automobile?
One of the best psychedelic albums out there are the two Duke of Stratosphere releases. Basically, in their mid-80s lull, XTC decided to make an EP that parodied and pay homage to the music they loved growing up, and throughout the six songs, they took on stuff like the Electric Prunes, Sid Barret era Pink Floyd, and of course the Beatles. Then they released an album after their breakthrough "Skylarking" that threw in a bit of Small Faces' "Ogden Gone Nut Flake" and the Hollies and the Beach Boys.

The Mole from the Ministry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-fL68DbcQ0

Vanishing Girl - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6asb8T6KoPA

And of course, the best song of the whole lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft1CrZKn9HQ. It's just a really pretty song.

I made a thread about Broadcast back in October when they announced they were going to be releasing their soundtrack LP. They're probably my favorite band ever. Here's a pretty rare video of them playing their song "Message From Home" from Work And Non Work on MTV back in 1997:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qh0dofEuXSE

There are a bunch more from this performance on that person's channel. Pretty much all songs from Work and Non Work. Here's an interview of Trish and James from a special a German television program did on Warp records in 1998. Some live versions of "Look Outside" and "Come On Let's Go" crop up here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKlJXZT1MhE

If you're into them here are some more of their psychedelic reference points that aren't the United States of America that you might enjoy:

White Noise. Included Delia Derbyshire and others of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Their album An Electric Storm is a classic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtyyc6Hr4Lk

Silver Apples. Duo based around oscillators and drums. They released two albums at the end of the 60s before breaking up. They saw a revival in the 90s and released some material then but it obviously couldn't recapture the 60s material.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1knVQEkEElM

Also, I tried with that Melody's Echo Chamber LP but when the last track lifted the melody from "I Found The F" I gave up.

As good as Hawkwind "proper" is, the best version of Space Ritual is the live Nik Turner solo concert (with Genesis P-Orridge and several other guests).

A lot of my favorite psyche rock (aside from the Bay Area stuff like Black Angels/Brian Jonestown/Warlocks/etc) comes out of Japan.

Ghost started out playing at Buddhist temples in the 80s and have been a consistent force for really awesome poo poo (not to be confused with Japanese visual kei band "Ghost" or lovely American metal band Ghost). Lama Rabi Rabi is probably my favorite record of theirs; here are the first two songs from it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SugMYKGp2Q (if the ambient banging around doesn't grab you, skip to ~10 minute mark when things get seriously awesome)

These guys are pretty excellent, some newer psych with a lot of drone/space rock elements. Some of the tunes have a 60s/13th Floor Elevators veneer going but I'd say they sound pretty thoroughly modern, overall. Excellent use of reverb and room sounds to create really expansive sounding textures:

Noooooo don't die thread! I'm really liking the more pop-oriented stuff like Jacco and Foxygen. I'm not finding nearly as much experimental, instrumental pscyhedelic music like I'd attribute to early Pink Floyd, though. The closest thing I've found is this, which I stumbled upon in the :420: music thread. It's fun and enjoyable, but still a far, far cry from A Saucerful of Secrets, though. :( Maybe I'm just setting the bar too high. I did like what I heard of Eternal Tapestry, at least.

I'd have to go and listen to all their records (well, I don't own literally all of them, but drat close) because they kind of blend together in my head, but a few I know are very good:

- Does the Cosmic Shepherd Dream of Electric Tapirs?
- Electric Heavyland
- Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under the Stars
- Dark Side of the Black Moon
- Pink Lady Lemonade
- Son of a Bitches Brew

Really though, I don't think there's any album of theirs that's noticeably worse than any other. They're remarkably consistent that way.

And if you ever get the chance to see them live, holy poo poo do it.

Speaking of, if there ever is another Terrastock, dear God I am dropping everything to get there. I've managed to miss every single one so far, for a variety of reasons.

Haven't seen it mentioned itt, but what did y'all think of Black Moth Super Rainbow's latest album? I thought Cobra Juicy was a lot better than Eating Us, as well as a natural progression of what Tobacco was working towards in his solo albums.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L1jQ-VV9Fs

I still don't think they could ever top Dandelion Gum. I've never heard another album that captures that same feeling. Eating Us tried too but only "Born on a day the sun didn't rise" and "Tooth Decay" really stood out. The rest of the tracks just kind of blended together for me, and I missed the lo-fi haziness of Dandelion Gum.

Can anyone recommend other artists with a similar sound? For me, Silver Apples seems like the most similar thing, in spirit, but not necessarily the actual sound. They both seem to take a primitivist aproach to electronic psych.
