Katatonia is perfect. Perfect. Please recommend more.

Now that I think about it, I'd like to hear some music that sounds like it would perfectly fit coming out of Maynard James Keenan's mouth. I haven't had a lot of time to take a look at these suggestions, but maybe it would help narrow it down to: poo poo that sounds kinda like Tool/MJK I guess?? Katatonia from above is a good fit, for example.

Not to sound like a dick, but if Tool and that Katatonia track are indicative of what you want, none of what I posted is gonna work for you.

Are you saying your music recommendations don't line up with my example or that I have horrible taste in music? 'Cuz I already knew that.

If I had more examples, I'd use them. That's mainly why I dropped by the recommendation thread: I don't have any good examples, so it's kind of a crap shoot for people recommending stuff. It's all good.

Can I get some recommendations for songs that sound similar to Jeff Mills' "The Bells"? I'm really getting into Detroit techno, but a lot of it is so harsh on the ears. What I really like about this song is that all the tones are still mechanical and cold, but they have a softness to the way they hit. Even the 909 drives but doesn't irritate.

I'm looking for some music in a genre I've had a soft spot for, but can barely find any of: Namely, "heavier" spins on Spaghetti Western style music, from rock to metal to industrial or maybe even limited techno. Actually, any musical twists on the genre would be cool. The showdown music in Season 4 of Breaking Bad felt like modernized SW music as well, while not being heavy at all, but I still like it.

Basically, I think there's flashes of exactly what I mean on the Escape from LA soundtrack, but they're only 30ish seconds long. It's shockingly hard to find this stuff, in particular since even a space Western tends to play the genres straight. I am also 100% for remixes or covers of classics that fit the bill.

I don't have any entire bands that fit this bill, but as a one-off track, I think you would really enjoy Monkey3's cover of Ennio Morricone's Once Upon a Time in the West. They're an italian post-rock/stoner rock band, and the song incorporates the type of guitar tone you would expect from them. Definitely a heavier re-imagining.

Right, so you're basically wanting the whole Gothenburg/Swedish west coast Balearic thing then. Although it depends on what aspect of it you find most interesting.

If you love TTA in particular, the obvious go-to thing is CEO, the solo project for one half of the duo, which sounds a hell of a lot like TTA:

Where I can find more "dark" sounding Italo disco like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsGsXLjEG-o?

I love the upbeat pop Ryan Paris/Ken Laszlo/Gary Low type stuff, but I am really fascinated by sounds more akin to this track. Johnny Jewel's projects (Chromatics [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0mxXrHowHQ], Desire [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K7rmxjk5RQ]) are a pretty good example. The snare sound with that slight delay/reverb is part of it, I guess, but also slower tempos, palm muted guitar, vintage analog synth sounds with reverb.

Also to add to Beeswax's great post above, I would also rec this awesome new group, Postiljonen, if you like that sort of stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P344cfTQpU

I'm looking for something in the vein of Ratatat to listen to while working. Something to keep my energy up but also nothing with distracting vocals. I haven't looked for new music in a few years and I don't listen to much electronic, so here's what else I have and my notes on them: Air is okay but it can put me to sleep; Daft Punk (excluding Discovery) works but not as well as Ratatat for some reason (I think Ratatat has more of a.. melodic and harmonic component that pleases my neurons); Neu! and Stereolab (not really related to any of these but motorik works for work, although Kraftwerk gets me too spaced out). Justice is a little too spazzy. Julia Kent's faster, more rhythmic songs work OK for a bit of a change in pace.

Basically think of what you'd listen to on Adderall and you have 10-page paper to do overnight. (This is not actually my situation.)

The Blow's not quite right for the task at hand (the vocals are a little too interesting), but I did like it. So I bought some Blow to use later.

Laurel Halo, too creepy to listen to after too much time awake. The way she uses her voice sort of reminds me of Fever Ray, which I also can't listen to while working.

Vitalic--I actually used to listen to this back in college but it sounds way cheesy now. It did bring to mind some other stuff I listened to back then, which included Kavinsky, and I did find some tracks of his that I liked. But man, I think the only French electronic artist I've listened to that didn't have a whiff of cheese--nothing to do with stereotypes of the French, for real--has been Air.

Starfucker--OK, I like this. I got "Miracle Mile" and the vocals are a mixed in a way that they're easy to tune out.

E: Ah, I was just reminded of Software/Mergener-Weisser's album "Software-Visions." It's a bit like Tangerine Dream but it has a repetitive quality that works very well for things like writing (and coding, of course). I was wondering how the hell I would find it and I was glad to discover it on Amazon MP3. Let's see if I'm going to like this as much as I did when I was 16. (I did listen to some awful poo poo back then, though.)

Beauty is a rare thing.

This may be perilously close to asking goons to do my 'homework' for me rather than an actual recommendation request, but I'm in need of music that fits a pretty specific theme and am coming up kind of empty here. I'm looking for songs about everyday life, simple moments in life, daily routines, shopping, spending time with friends / family, etc. etc.

Allmusic actually has an "Everyday Life" theme which has been pretty much completely unhelpful. The songs should be upbeat, not too hard or edgy, and in a mainstream pop/rock or folk-pop kind of vein.

Any ideas guys?

I was listening to some Chairlift today; perhaps "Garbage" and "Evident Utensil," and maybe "Planet Health" could fit the bill? And in folk/acoustic blues, maybe Skillet by Davey Graham. If you can deal with country, Blue Eyes by Gram Parsons, emphasizing chores and quilts and clocks and poo poo, might work too. Also, Our House by CSNY.

E: Several songs by The Kinks might work as well. "Holiday," "Have a Cuppa Tea," "Picture Book," "Village Green," "Shangri-La" are all sort of domestic in their themes (although not always as happy as they sound, maybe).

Comedy "Vegetables" by The Beach Boys

E2: "Penny Lane" is pretty daily-routineish, I suppose. Likewise with Obladi-Oblada. poo poo, I bet Paul McCartney's solo work has a billion things you could work with, but I've never listened to them at all.

I should probably have mentioned that this is for marketing purposes. :v:

Has to be as broad and inoffensive as possible. Chairlift and The Arcade Fire are way too cool for this particular client. The Graham Parsons tune is nice but not quite peppy enough. "Our House" is a great choice but we're probably looking for something not quite as well known.

Right after my first post I actually found this tune which is pretty much what I think we're looking for here:

Something along those lines.
