The old portfolio thread has been archived; apparently we all need to update our portfolios more often. This thread is for both showing work in a fuller context, and discussion of it and its presentation. At the end of the last thread, people using hosted services seemed to be moving away from smugmug-type galleries to more customisable ones like zenfolio, 4ormat and cargocollective. Indexhibit was the most popular lightweight CMS, but they've since dramatically changed from a simple way to present images to something much fuller. Stacey looks to do what Indexhibit used to. To kick off, my site is richardaldred.com. I just updated it to add a little text about each series.

My website/portfolio, which is due for a massive revamp: http://bgillettephoto.com I also have a Zenfolio account that I use for proofing, but I've been considering using as a full catalog of my work: http://bradgillettephotographer.zenfolio.com/f763877211 This online portfolio thing is a lot of work.

Great sites to the both of you. Here's mine: http://www.highfieldmedia.com/ It's just a 500px-driven site. Edit: updated the url. No longer a 500px site, now using Squarespace. Inf fucked around with this message at 23:36 on Jan 2, 2014 |

Mine is at kellydavisphotography.com and is due for a major overhaul. Maybe more eyes on my page will inspire me to get cracking on that. Just a simple smugmug site, nothing fancy.

My site is https://chrishaydenphoto.com. Wordpress via Lithium Hosting (Yay SA Mart!). I'm completely lost with web stuff, so it's a basic free theme and no CSS. Can anyone recommend a better free/cheap wordpress theme for photography, or tell me how to fix the site? I'd like to be able to have a better category system, and be able to move the thumbnails around.

You can try google for photoblogging or photography themes - many of these will be "pro" and cost money. You can also go directly tohttp://wordpress.org/extend/themes/tag-filter/ and use the checkboxes they have to filter down to one that's fit for you. I bought one that I liked for about $40 that I'm currently installing and customizing; it's similar to my current homepage in what I want. I probably could have created one myself for free, but the time saved for me was worth the money.

They have a bunch for like $79 and you can customize it pretty easily. If you don't know how to do something, their support team is really good at getting back to you too, so you can customize almost anything. Works well enough for me as a starter page. http://www.breanneunger.com/

Yeah, 4ormat is great. They keep adding new features that I have yet to check out. My site is built with just on of their basic themes and took me almost no time at all. I really need to update it but keep putting off anything except the occasional upload. http://www.sometimesiwander.com/

I've been tossing up whether to go with squarespace or not, I think 4ormat might be a winner.

After the hard drive in my server died I decided to try using a CMS instead of hand coding my site like last time. I'd heard good things about indexhibit so despite it now costing money I gave it a try. I've used a bunch of other CMSes but indexhibit is incredibly difficult to use by comparison and they treat you like you're stupid by assuming that you'd never use gallery software for images larger than 400px or 200KB. I had to edit code to get around these artificial limitations. There's no documentation and no support other than the indexhibit forums. I posted on the forums about my dissatisfaction and asked if there was any way I could get a refund, because there's no way I'm going to keep using this thing. Hours later my thread was deleted and my account was gone and I can't reregister. Now I'm out $32 (!) and I can't even download the software again. Basically, never use indexhibit. I'm going back to a hand coded site and if I don't see a Paypal refund by tomorrow morning, I'll be filing a Paypal dispute. Hoo boy...

I had a feeling people might have a problem with that aspect of the site, I like everything about thet template except that. I'll see if I can add an arrow or a scroll bar to it, should be pretty straight forward I think.

Yea it's better. It would help even more if you can make the low-opacity photos gain a bit of that opacity back when a person hovers above them.

I'm gonna have to learn some CSS, or hunt around on google to work that one out, but I've got some arrows on either side of the viewing image now so its totally obvious what to do.

Updated my site http://mczany.com/ Using a much more efficient wordpress theme this time round, now I just need to decide if GoDaddy is the right host for me. The rates are cheap enough but barely any of my prospective clients will be outside of Australia / New Zealand, so it makes more sense to host it locally for speedier loading of images.

It's "Hypershot" from Themeforest. One of their relatively new premium themes. http://themeforest.net/item/hypershot-photography-portfolio-wordpress-theme/3391790 I didn't like the idea of having to spend money on a wordpress theme, but I was suckered in. My wife loved it (My photography partner), and I couldn't fault it. Mobile view is darn nice too, which was a huge problem with my previous theme. Sometimes, you get what you pay for

I wanted something simple to just show a few images so I just threw together galleria + bootstrap for something basic. Links aren't functional yet but I like the look and I'm using a password protected version of the same thing to let friends and family see their stuff online before they decide what prints they want. e: actual site http://lightthemountain.com

Like dogs? Really like dogs? Well have I got the site for you! http://tatertv.smugmug.com Mostly for folks at the dog park since I didn't really want to keep printing out photos from them. It's due for a redesign as well -- at the very least I want to get rid of the "Find your dog" section as it's nigh impossible to maintain. You wouldn't believe how many dogs out there are named Sammy or Bailey.

My wife put most of this together and I just got around today to organizing it and uploading photos. Tried to keep it as clean as possible and easy to find things when prospective clients visit. The only thing left is to get better pictures; maybe in 10-20 years I'll have them but for the time being I hope to at least make some change from it. http://www.pchphotography.net e: Also, I hate watermarks. Am I cool with not watermarking? If someone really wanted to take an image I assume they can get it one way or another, and watermarks just seems so lame. rio fucked around with this message at 04:52 on Mar 27, 2013 |
