They wanted to get the gently caress away from that 3 as soon as possible and I don't blame them.

Assassin's Creed III seems like its made up from every stupid side mission that you hate in other games. Admittedly I haven't played it, but I've been watching my brother and all he seems to do is follow people at a safe distance, escort people, do weird driving sections and weird hunting minigames. I don't actually see what the core gameplay is, it all looks like busywork to me.

To be honest so am I. The boats were the best part of AC3.

Everyone should play DUKE games.

:dukedog:
The series going into an almost pure action direction is mostly disappointing because of games like that are very rare to begin with. We don't know when a new Deus Ex is coming out where you can socially make your way around, and the new Hitman is more about "move from point A to point B without being seen" instead of actually blending in and walking around public spaces. I loved AC2 and Brotherhood, and I even like bits of the first game quite a bit but I feel like they keep going on a downward trend with AC in general.

Arkane/Zenimax did have job postings up very recently for engine programmers with experience on at least one AAA title and "passionate about FPS and RPG games." Hopefully we'll soon be playing Dishonored 2: Dishonor, I Hardly Even Know Her on the PS4.

That AC4 trailer has me crossing fingers... I'm still not going to buy it on day one, but I'm hopeful that they have learned some mistakes. Edward Kenway looks a lot more charismatic than both Haytham and Connor judging by his actions alone. Too bad his progeny is so lame. Truly though, if it's going to be based more around the pirating aspect that was introduced in 3... that's a very good thing. I hope the rest of the gameplay finds its way back to its AC2 roots.

It's got a better setup to be more AC2'y, at least. The architecture should be more interesting to climb on, and they've got a great excuse (islands) for lots of smaller explorable areas, as in AC2, instead of AC3's giant gently caress-off doldrums.

There was some stealthy stabbing in that trailer, though what possible city could that be? Some Caribbean port perhaps? I'm a sucker for historical action games, which is why I play Dynasty Warriors even though it is primitive and awful by any objective measure. Compared to that, the gameplay in AC is a masterpiece.

Yeah, I like historical action games as well, which is what got me really into Assassins Creed 1 and 2. I wish there were more games like it, just by more creative developers. UBISoft is such a brownie batter game developer, their titles just don't interest me at all. Except for Watch Dogs for some reason, i'm really hyped for that one.

Yeah I think if it weren't for the scifi stuff and the Dan Brown stuff AC would be one of my favorite series. The parts at the beginning of AC2 where the gameplay is all the same but you're doing really banal favors and getting in street fights and hanging out with Da Vinci are really awesome. Also, you get to play as a baby.

The thing is, you wouldn't need the Dan Brown and scifi stuff to even have a modern cast, they could just be historical researchers reading about the past in order to discover the secrets of the assassins. You wouldn't have to change anything about the characters at all really.

edit: I mean, if you're rewriting the game I don't know why you WOULD want to keep the modern cast but Ubisoft seems hellbent on having it that way. But then, they seem equally hellbent on scifi and Dan Brown stuff so it's neither here nor there.

I think on Idle Thumbs they were discussing what it would be like if each AC game with a new protagonist just had him finding the notes or journal whatever of the previous guy and picking up where he left off on the conspiracy. I think I could buy that, even. I don't want to sound like I'm making GBS threads on the series but I think there's so many things about it that they could make adjustments to and make me enjoy it so much more.

Not having yearly installments would help because there's absolutely no chance I'm buying one every year.

By what metric? Its scores were nontrivially lower than that of, say, Brotherhood and I heard a lot of general misgivings about the game among reviewers. The dudes at Giant Bomb, for instance, were pretty quick to say to one of their colleagues that he could stop at Brotherhood. I don't think I know of anybody, among critics, my friends, or goons who claim that it wasn't disappointing after 2 and Brotherhood.

Additionally, the fact that they made 3 games in a row featuring Ezio as a playable character and then immediately ditched Connor after one release should tell you that at least one fairly major part of the game did not resonate as well as past releases.

Connor was such a wasted opportunity. I know they wanted a Mohawk speaker for his voice actor but he was really bad, and the writing wasn't good either. After the initial bit, the fact that he grew up as a Mohawk hardly figures into the story at all, almost none of the colonist characters react to him in any particular way. He was almost a blank slate for the entire game, except for a few moments when he had strong motives but that made no sense.
