TressFX made my framerate drop from 30fps to 15fps. Is watching Lara's hair flop around worth playing a choppy game? Sorry, no.

This game is like lady Rambo in loving great. I love the deaths too. I know why they would bother people but man, they're fun.

" (That really is the best possible emote for these guys) I just finished the game in about 12 hours, collecting doodads if they appeared on my map. I thought the game was a fantastic adventure with just the right amount of grit. I played on Normal and the game was for the most part pretty easy, but that's alright because I was having fun with the mix of action and exploration. The optional tombs were pretty short though. Also the transitions into tombs where you walk slowly with a torch were kind of annoying after the second time since you do it on your way out too. Also, at the end, when everyone's on a ship heading home and Lara says 'I'm not going home' does the book she's holding actually show anything in particular? I couldn't tell partially because the texture of the page seemed really low quality.?

Those slow cave crawling segments are there so the game can load the next area for you without breaking flow, it's understandable. I'm having a blast so far. I enjoy hunting for salvage more than anything and knowing that going out my way to find treasure is rewarding in its self (also for upgrading equipment and skills etc). The game really enjoys throwing you in to set piece after set piece. I was so desperate for just some puzzle fun and taking it easy I actually used fast track to go back to the beggining and get some extra trinckets and XP and more importantly: a breather! I'm constantly on edge from scavangers and enviromental QTE moments you don't have time tor rest your beautiful rendered high detail hair! What is a girl to do?

The QTEs are a bit of a mix. Some of them are so close to actual gameplay (things like Lara doing a jump and then you need to mash e to hold on, etc) that the QTE requirements can be guessed. Others are a bit more cryptic (such as needing to guess when you need use versus melee in some of the melee QTEs). They were mostly fairly effective, except that next time they really need to replace the icon with the binding you have...

One that got me was when I had to press B when throughout the whole game yu only press X or Y. It was pretty cool because it wasn't so much a QTE it was just the game telling you that you'll be needing to drop off of zip-lines in the future so it only pops up once and the rest of it you just do. edit: I don't die nearly enough in this game. Just realised I've only seen one death and that was falling gut first into a tree branch. Diesel Fucker fucked around with this message at 13:38 on Mar 6, 2013 |

I'm not in love with QTEs but I appreciate Crystal Dynamics design choice to have then flow with what is going on in the scene instead of just being a bland pop up. It's less jarring to me, at least.

The ones where you have to kick with the shrinking circle gauge are a little annoying though. You're about to die, make sure you wait before kicking! They aren't difficult or anything, its just that the timing is a little jarring compared to the rest of the QTEs.

Finished it. It's quite good, but like people have said the gameplay and plot are completely at odds with each other. The narrative completely fails as a result. (though it's quite boilerplate anyway) It's really disappointing that no games have done this well. It's like the writers never talked to the gameplay people - which may be the case, who knows, since the writer was on contract. I mean, they're trying to tell the story of a normal person going through hell to survive and what I'm playing is Rambo. If you want to tell a story where your character is vulnerable you can't make it a shooter. Or at least you have to make it a shooter where there are fewer enemies and each one is extremely dangerous. Ie, you have to play dirty just to survive a single encounter with one enemy. That probably wouldn't sell enough in the AAA budget range though. It's unfortunate. And how big is this cult? I think I've fought over 500 of them. How do they fit on this tiny island? I'm a bit disturbed by how often they beat Lara up as well. She falls down a 10 story slope onto/through something sharp like every 10 minutes. Aside from that, the gameplay is quite fun, though they need more exploration elements as those are more interesting than the combat. I like their animation system a lot. The lighting looks a bit flat - I'm guessing they have no indirect lighting.

With my 7970 and everything cranked up, including TressFX it just looks gorgeous. It may not be the deepest game but goddamned if it doesn't suck me in completely. Actually tried some MP out yesterday and while Team DM was kind of lovely, the Rescue mode was pretty fun and lead to some interesting back and forth battles.

For those who are having crashing issues with Nvidia cards, in addition to disabling Tessalation, try disabling "Exclusive Fullscreen" as well. This can be found under the basic tab in options. Prior to disabling those I was having the crash to desktop issue other folks are/were having. Hope this helps.

I had approx 300mb to download of the digital release when my internet screwed up. It was up ad down more than a whores knickers so it took me ALL day to download the last 300mb. Finally got it running and I'm running it with everything enabled except tessellation and fancy hair - getting solid 50-60fps and the game looks very nice indeed. I just reached the bit where you get the axe to climb and here's my thoughts so far: Negatives 1. Terrible subtitling. It's like we're back to 1997 and the first use of CSS! 2. Your buddies are a bit bland and focus-group-choice. 3. It's a bit easy. 4. Lots of over-shoulder shots which let you peek down Lara's top. Positives 1. Very nice looking game and it is nice to see proper PC graphics support. 2. Nice animations. 3. Gameplay feels really smooth and so far I've not felt need to use mouse/kb even on pc. 4. Lots of over-shoulder shots which let you peek down Lara's top. I hope there is a sequel and that SE/CD show a bit more confidence and ambition - this is a good start but it feels like they played it a bit too safe.

So, I don't have a PC so I'm about to buy the game for my PS3 or X360. I've heard some comments about the PS3 being the better choice out of the two (better lightning/sharper textures), but I generally prefer the 360. The last game I bought on the 360 however (Far Cry 3) was graphically really underwhelming...

The checkpoints are right there if you fail, it's mostly the same button, and they somewhat make sense to what you're doing. They really beat the hell out of Lara though. Falling down several stories, sliding everywhere, getting punched, etc.

Played about 6 hours yesterday and holy poo poo the game feels super mean towards Lara. Otherwise I really like how they differentiated it from Uncharted. Its pretty obvious where inspiration came from, but I think it works well together. Also I can't not hear her as luanne from king of the hill but british. EDIT: Also I'm suprised that (beginning spoilers) they don't make you find medical supplies to patch the rebar hole in her side. I never saw her bandage it and she just kinda starts ignoring it.

Al Cu Ad Solte posted:I am utterly blown away that Crystal Dynamics decided that these Quick Time Events weren't complete abominations of gameplay design. Why is this still acceptable in the industry? I read somewhere that QTEs keep the player from losing interest during cutscenes since it is a bit of interaction. And if you look in this thread you see people liking them. Personally QTEs should never be used for anything that is also in gameplay, so if you can climb during regular gameplay you already have a system the player is familiar with and so should confuse them with a new way to do the same thing. Then there is stuff like using symbols instead of buttons and in one case the icon move off screen so I had to guess what it was supposed to be(only got it because someone in the thread mentioned that it was always triangle/Y). Honestly I liked the subtitle because they put the effort in to make them for the hard of hearing even if that doesn't affect me I really like having clear subtitles with backgrounds and different colours depending on speaker, it also helped when I had to turn down the volume because some idiot thought that having Voices and SFX on the same slider was a good idea. BTW, did anyone get the dodge kill working? I only do the stun thing regardless on enemy/timing so I'm thinking it's a waste of skill points. It's good game despite the torture porn and story/gameplay disconnect, I honestly facepalmed during the test of fire cutscene, because it felt like they had decided what would come after without thinking of how it would happen.

Its pretty obvious where inspiration came from, but I think it works well together. The whole plot started to annoy me halfway through the game, survivor story or not this game eventually made me want to skip all the "Lara in pain, take 50" cutscenes. Also QTEs, there are basically two kinds in this game, the ones you often do twice because the timed prompts (especially with the PC prompts) come out of left field and make no sense, and those which shouldn't be cutscenes with QTEs in the first place (using your melee, use, whatever skills to beat someone up, interact with the environment etc.), especially since 90% of the time the only point of the latter seems to be beating Lara up some more. I have no problems with sequences in which normal gameplay flows into a scripted sequence and you use your usual controls to get through (moving left/right, shooting barricades, jumping etc.) although some of them are kind of pointless, eg. when all you do is hold "forward" to move Lara through a place with custom camera angles which could as well be non-interactive.
