Ninoy Aquino Airport, Manila

Lani's Bar is on the edge of the airport, its full length glass windows overlooking a thousand planes passing through every day at the rundown Ninoy Aquino Airport. Pessimistically named after some murdered opposition leader who was assassinated here about a century ago after returning from exile in what used to be the United States, the battered airport was once one of the busiest in Asia before war tore the country in half.

Airports can be weird places for people in your line of work, if only because you're walking around without the 40-odd kilograms of weaponry you'd usually carry to get a slurpee at the 7-Eleven. But given that roughly 30 metres from where you stand, nervous passengers are filtering through metal detectors beneath large signs proclaiming "DRUG TRAFFICKERS WILL BE HANGED", it seemed prudent to let Mr Newport freight your more questionable goods ahead to your destination at Lagu Lagu. His local fixer Kale has assured you: The appropriate "administration fees" had been paid to the appropriate officials to ensure the bulky crates containing your guns, ammo, and various other tools of the trade would arrive unmolested.

Strolling into Lani's bar, the wifi jukebox throws up an ARO of the menu and tries to pipe some saccharine tagalog pop song into your commlinks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9waCw3d3g4.

The publican stands behind the bar, slowly and very cautiously polishing glasses, gingerly gripping each one with her clunky, outdated cyberlimb that replaced an arm she lost to a Renraku drone in the Battle of Manila a decade ago. The place is nearly empty. The publican smiles politely as you enter, and, making a wild assumption based on your deportment and dress, nods each of you in turn towards the private booth at the rear where Kale is waiting.

The fixer is about 40, a relaxed and friendly Filipino who's lived through six or seven wartime atrocities. He sits at the private booth with a beer in his right hand, a cigarette in his left, and a hint of a crucifix visible under the collar of his cheap suit, unbuttoned against the muggy heat of the first day of the wet season. He was the one who contacted you a week ago by email, outlined the job, and offered you a $2000/week retainer--plus generous hazard pay for any combat missions--to come and work for Mr Newport. An ork sits opposite, nursing a drink in his big hands.

"You're here," Kale smiles, puffing on his cigarette, the kind of noxious, pure, unfiltered cigarette that's been banned in the UCAS for 40 years. He's drinking an unremarkable local macrobrew called San Miguel. A patriot's drink. Kale taps a button on the scuffed screen of his commlink, transferring a few bucks to the bar. The white noise generator built into the side of the booth starts projecting a low-level of messy random noise radially outwards from the table, quiet enough to talk over, loud enough to confound anyone trying to eavesdrop.

"I'm Kale. This is Nail," the fixer nods at the ork opposite. "It is his friend at the docks who'll be smoothing the delivery of your gear to Lagu Lagu.

"Our flight leaves in an hour. So take a seat. Have a drink. Tell me, so I can put names to faces," he says, pushing his glasses up his nose, eyes flicking to something projected on the lenses. "Who's who?"

Vincent Coll

Introductions--how long as it been since Vincent talked to anyone who didn't know to wet themselves in his presence? Years, at least. "I'm, uh, Vincent," he says. "Vincent Coll."

Vincent slips a hand into his pocket and fingers the small, chipped credstick made of recycled plastics and a repurposed memory drive--the kind of credstick given by a parent to a thoughtless child. Ten nuyen. Saving it for a real need seemed almost pointless, but he wasn't about to spend the last of his money on whatever miserable excuse for a beer they had on this miserable rock. "I'll pass on that drink."

Noise

First things first. That music has to go.

After flipping his battered Meta Link knockoff to passive mode with a thought, Noise squeezes his bulk into the booth. Better order a drink, Nicky - you may be broke, but you can't afford to look like it! Nobody likes a cheapskate or a stiff - let that gweilo elf in the suit play that role if he wants to.

"I'm Noise - good to meet you. San Miguel for me."

Nail

Watching the others walk up, Nails nods at them as his name is mentioned. The troll and a couple of the others looked alright to him. However, someone forgot to tell the guys showing up in suits that this wasn't Seattle.

Taking a drink of his San Miguel beer, he listens as each person introduces himself. He didn't really care what drinking that brand of beer meant, every bar on every island had their own take on what drink meant what. Too many variations to keep track of. Just drink what the locals are drinking and most of the time you'll be okay.

Turning to the troll and smirking, "Aren't you a little short for a troll?"

messed up the formula when rolling starting cash. starting cash: 3d6+9*50 461 Roll ended up being 11+9(left over money) so 20*50 or 1000Y starting cash.

Natalya

Fortunately for those having arrived in suits, they were quickly spared the indignity of being the most incongruous stand-outs in the room by the arrival of Natalya, who had spent several years and a sizable amount of money ensuring that no matter where she went, she would be one of the most noticeable people in any given place at any given time.

Tail idly twitching as her cybernetic legs gracefully propelled her across the floor, she tsked sympathetically at the sight of the bartender's outdated cyberlimb...such a pity, with the right augs she could truly be stunning...then flashed the woman a grin as her booth was indicated, artfully sliding into her seat and crossing one digitigrade leg over the other.

children overboard posted:

"Oh please, darling," Natalya chuckled, her English lightly accented. "Surely you don't need me to tell you who I am." It was less a boast (well, not entirely) and more a simple statement of fact...generally speaking, people didn't tend to mistake her for someone else. But the man in the suit simply stared at her with the aggravating sort of patience of somebody working their way down a checklist and determined to complete it, and she sighed in exasperation, rolling her violet eyes. "Tsk, fine. I am Natalya Voronova, and I am sure it is very nice to meet all of you whoever you are, just as I am sure it will be most delightful to meet this Mr. Newport of yours once we finally arrive." After four hours spent cooped up on a plane from Vladivostok to Manila, even a private charter, Natalya wasn't looking forward to repeating the experience. Long periods of sitting around doing nothing didn't suit her.

She glanced over the bar's menu out of the corner of her display...it certainly wasn't the fanciest place she'd ever been (some of which she'd even had an invitation for) but it was far from the worst. "I will have a Logic Bomb," she said, choosing to mix whatever cheap vodka the bar happened to stock with ne0n, a vividly colored energy drink with B vitamins, electrolytes, and a truly unhealthy amount of caffeine.

Noise

"Maybe a bit. But I'm still tall enough to see over the crowds, friend. That's usually enough for me."

With a toothy grin plastered on his face, Noise counted backwards from ten in his head. You have to make a good impression today - you know that, Sparky told you that when she dropped you off in Manila today. You don't make good impressions and build guanxi by reprogramming your new co-worker's PAN to display everything in inverted colors or subscribing him to the Coprology Weekly journal.

Can't go back home for a while - this is what you have now, like it or not. Best to make the most of it.

Vincent's surprise at the Natalya's drastic augmentations manifests only as a single raised eyebrow. He slides over in the booth to make room for her, and listens to her introduction with a thin smirk. "Well," he says as she finishes, "It certainly is an impressive body you've had built---given the raw materials, of course."

Chuckling at the trolls response, "Yes, I suppose it is." Taking another swig of beer, "You and I are going to get along just fine."

Natalya's grin returned wider than before at the back-handed compliment, reaching across the table (and anyone else who happened to be sitting between them) and patting Vincent affectionately on the cheek. "Aw, why thank you, that's so sweet of you to say. And don't worry, maybe one day you can trade in that suit for a sense of style too," she said before breaking into laughter.

Rodney doesn't often drink. The good Doctor was very firm on avoiding any potential toxins poisoning the body and that much has stayed with him now that he's out on his own. Still, this was as close to a vacation as he was going to have anytime soon, so might as well indulge just a little.

Kale's weathered features beam up a smile at Natalya. "I guess I did have an inkling. And yes, Mr Newport is looking forward to meeting you. He'll be able to tell you more about his business, but if you have questions about the island itself I've spent a bit of time there. Most of it in muddy trenches, but I'll answer what I can."

The fixer busies himself tapping orders into the menu ARO, leaving you to discuss skillsets. Looks like this round's on him.

Noise

"I'm your hacker. I can handle hardware or software, in-person or virtual, legal or not. I can keep up in a firefight or a fistfight, and I can be quiet when I need to - just don't expect me to be a ghost. I might be little for a troll, but that still makes me pretty noticeable."

Noise carefully removes the top from his beer - hardly anyone makes bottles sized for troll hands. Sip - not bad. Tastes about the same as the San Miguel from the Hong Kong brewery, anyway.

"I'm not interested in speaking with Mr. Newport before I've accomplished anything," Vincent says coldly. As he speaks he gradually leans in, subtly violating Kale's personal space even as his voice gets quieter and quieter, forcing Kale to focus his full attention on the menacing elf. "Let's pretend we're not trainees and skip past the orientation lecture. I was told your conventional security options were ineffective against the gangs, terrorists, and monsters that infest this place, but I can take your liabilities and turn them into assets. If you can give me the name and location of a group that has been frustrating to deal with, but has a known leader, I'll remember to be generous, when I outrank both of you."

Rodney

Rodney doesn't often drink. The good Doctor was very firm on avoiding any potential toxins poisoning the body and that much has stayed with him now that he's out on his own. Still, this was as close to a vacation as he was going to have anytime soon, so might as well indulge just a little.

"Nice to meet you all. I don't have any sort of fun nickname, though. I'm Rodney. It's a boring name, but it's mine. So what's everyone's talent? I'm pretty handy with a pair of pistols, personally. How about you?"

Natalya

Natalya pouted as Vincent ignored her teasing in favor of the other man in a suit, like being drawn to like she supposed, and leaned back in her seat. "Hm? Oh yes, pistols...I do some of that myself, but it is more of a hobby really. Or perhaps a sideline. Sometimes it is a perk." Her insouciant grin fell away for a moment, a professional bearing asserting itself about her like a switch had been flipped. "I specialize in on-site physical infiltration and intrusion, security and counter-security assessment, and retrieval of high-value assets. I do not do computers or hardware, both are very boring and I leave them to other people who find them more entertaining."

She turned towards Noise as if seeing him for the first time, looking the troll up and down though apparently she found his height or lack thereof (relatively) utterly unremarkable. "You do hardware, you say? Good, excellent. You see? Already we are coming together as a team. I do infiltration, he does hardware, that one does...whatever it is he does," she went on, waving a hand dismissively towards Vincent. "And since I am here, anything else that the rest of you do will be that much more stylish by association."

Nail

Finishing off his bottle of San Miguel, Nail signals for another. "Well, I shoot things. Mostly bad guys. Who the bad guys are is up to my employer. I guess that should be our employer now. Besides that, well I dabble in other things. I may not be as sneaky as some of you" glancing at Natalya, "but I can hold my own. And I don't know how many of you realize this, but Yomi is an island, eventually we'll find ourselves on a boat and I more than know my way around most stations on anything up to supertankers."

First impressions are important. Negotiation? Diplomacy? Intimidation? It hardly matters, I got six successes.

Lani's Bar

"I appreciate your eagerness, Mr Coll," Kale says, leaning back and letting out a puff of thick smoke, a flicker of irritation crossing his face at your last statement. "You certainly sound like a consummate conciliator. Our problem is that insurgencies and unnatural horrors that lurk in the depths of even more unnatural forests don't typically have street addresses that I could point you towards.

"For those of you who are interested, the splintered Huk ultranationalists are the main groups that are suspected to be behind various bombings and kidnappings. I don't want to bore you, Mr Coll, with an 'orientation lecture' about the history of my country being torn apart, but when the Japanese invaded those of us who fought back called ourselves the Hukbalahap, an old name from World War II meaning The Nation's Army Against the Japanese.

"Cut forward several decades of brutal guerrilla fighting and merciless reprisals on our civilian populations. When our leader Bernardo Culala finally brokered a ceasefire--ceding parts of the south to the Japanese--there were some Huk rebels who refused to give up fighting until all of our country was back in Filipino hands. They kept the name, and they kept fighting. The rebels are hard men and women, and pitiless. They had to be to survive the war."

He's interrupted as the bartender brings over a tray of drinks and starts doling them out. She makes some assumptions about who ordered what and places the cocktail in front of Natalya and the sake in front of Stormcrow.

"Thank you Lani. Anyway," Kale says, flicking a tip her way with the swipe of his commlink screen, relaxing again as he reaches for another beer. "As an aside, I should let you all know that 'Yomi' is the Japanese name for the Island, and not popular amongst any Filipinos, be they Huk or Culala Loyalist. Mr Crow could tell you perhaps," he says, looking to the mage. "Is it correct that in Japanese the word Yomi basically means 'hell'?"

Natalya

"Spasibo," Natalya said as she took the fluorescent purple drink that was set down in front of her and drained half of it in a single pull, sighing contentedly as the bracing mixture of B-12, glucuronolactone, and distilled spirits worked their own brand of magic.

"These rebels," she finally said as she lowered her glass, running a fingertip along the rim. "I understand the problems that you are having with them, it was mentioned in the message that your Mr. Newport sent to me. But if he is a smart man, and the fact that he has offered to pay me a great deal of money to retain my services indicates that this is so, then I assume that he is also aware of my skillsets and of the work I have done before. Which indicates to me that perhaps he has in mind other work for us as well besides running around in the jungle hunting rebels and the occasional wild animal, yes?"

"Not that I have any objections to doing either of those things, of course," she added with a toss of her asymmetrical hair before downing the rest of her drink with a satisfied smack of her lips, "I am always happy to help a man of abundant wealth and discriminating taste as your Mr. Newport. But he is not the only corporate interest interested in Whatever-It-Should-Be-More-Appropriately-Referred-To-As Island, and I imagine that these rebels are not the only concern that weighs heavily upon him, am I right?," she asked, smiling coquettishly.

"We call the island Lagu Lagu, named by the Filipino explorer who first surveyed it. I'm not particularly precious about the name, just something to keep in mind when dealing with the locals," Kale says congenially, and then lowers his voice to little more than a conspiratorial whisper, turning up the white noise generator.

"And it is true the Newport Group is not the only telecommunications company that has set up there. Perhaps if the others resort to skullduggery, what you are referring to may become necessary. But cover stories are a necessity on an island of this size. So, if you are asking me officially, then your official role is 'security consultant'. Nice and legal security consultants. After all, there's no crime in protecting one's own lawful interests against declared terrorists," he grins coyly.

Natalya

Natalya's own smile slowly became something much more predatory as she listened to the man in the suit, the other man in the suit whatever his name was, outline the unspoken employment prospects awaiting them once they arrived on Yomi or Lagu Lagu or whatever the locals felt like calling it. With corporations the question was never if, merely when. "Mmm...good, good," she chuckled. "Oh, this exciting opportunity gets more and more exciting by the minute. Your Mr. Newport and I are going to have a very fruitful working relationship together, I can tell."

"I think we all will, Natalya. I don't mind security work, but causing trouble is usually more interesting than stopping it, yeah? This crew looked too, um, exotic to be a straight-up security gig, anyway."

Turning to Kale, Noise lets his sharp-toothed grin drop into a more serious expression.

"I don't want to sound like an rear end in a top hat, Kale, but Yomi Island was hell on earth for people like me. I hope Lagu Lagu is a little more hospitable now. Am I going to have to watch my back more than usual, or are the locals more friendly towards metas these days?"

Nail

That's the second time Mr. Suit included Nail as part of some middle guy. He's sounding pretty amateur here, time to ratchet it up a notch.

Laughing loudly in the direction of Vincent, "From the sound of it, it sounds like you think I'm something more than just part of this crew, like reporting that I know more about the island than I'm saying is going to do something. I put my rear end on the line and get paid just the same as all of you. You should chill out a bit and have a drink or are you too good to drink with the rest of us? Or maybe it's just that you're not cut out for the real world pretty boy."

Now that he's said his piece, Nail gives them an info dump on how he sees the island. "There's no conspiracy here that I know of. The real world isn't like the trids where every pissant group is summoning the next great world destroyer. Sure, I've lived on the island for the last couple months. As far as I know, the Huks are just another two-bit rebel group, granted they are a bit more organized and equipped than most, but still nothing special. As far as the private security I see around the island, most of them don't look like they've ever shot at a real person. They're content to drive around in their armored up trucks and keep the corporate green zones somewhat secure. Rumor has it, any mention of the jungle, and they're calling back to their corporate about the obligations of their contracts and such. And trust me, If there was more that I knew, I would not hesitate to tell you, last thing I want is some guy who's watching my back to run off because poo poo just got real."

"So you know they're lurking in the Jungle, then. Fortunately, finding people is just one more talent that's dropped from the sky in front of you." He tilts his head slightly to the side, indicating the only other elf at the table, Stormcrow. "A jungle spirit should be able to find a Huck patrol lurking about for us. Five minutes of labor later, and we'll have a handful of local informants ready to give us all the addresses we need. Do you think Mr. Newport would prefer to break them in house, or is interrogation yet another skillset the Newport group lacks?"

Stormcrow

Inwardly, Stormcrow winced a bit at the other elf's rough approach, but long training kept it from showing on his face. It was an act, he knew. Intimidation was just another tool.

Still, it went a bit deeper. You could tell a lot about a person by the tool they went for first. Here, he thought, was a man who was used to getting his way through fear. To be successful enough at that for it to be like the well-worn handle of a spanner in the hands of a craftsman, you had to be the sort of person who was capable of fearful acts. Stormcrow filed that bit of information away for later.

"Wouldn't be necessary. Memory magic works both ways. If they knew anything I could just tear it whole from their minds," he said. "It's workable, as long as I can find a kami that has encountered the Huk... they are no good for searching for things they've never encountered before, even if certain kinds can see a man once and then find him, always."

"The trouble, it would seem, is to find the specific individuals that have knowledge of the higher ups. If they follow the tactics of other revolutionary groups I may or may not have encountered while... providing security consultation... they likely operate in semi-autonomous cells with only sporadic contact with each other or the command structure. The average foot soldier, in that case, would almost assuredly not know anything of use to us."

"I'm assuming the Huk separatists have some sort of leader? One neck to throttle, as the saying goes?"

"You are correct, Noise, that when the Japanese held the island they used it as a prison camp for metahumans," Kale says frankly in the overly formal English of someone who didn't grow up speaking it natively. "Both their metahumans from home, and the ones they found here when they invaded the Philippines. Conditions were horrific, and many died in the VITAS outbreaks and famines. But when the Huks took Lagu-Lagu back, we liberated the island and freed the inmates. Many of those who'd been imprisoned there joined our fight, and became our brothers-in-arms. So you can expect fair treatment from Filipinos.

"Not to say my countrymen are without prejudice on all matters. The population is largely Catholic and deeply so. When speaking to the locals I would... deemphasise issues of spiritual difference," he says with a slight nod to Stormcrow.

Another six successes on trying to convince them both their careers depends on them making me happy.

Kale glares at the elf. "Ask a specific question, Mr Coll, and you will get a specific answer," he says flatly. "If your question is 'tell me everything you know about the island' then my answer to you is 'it is 40 minutes until our boarding call, would you like me to start when it rose from the ocean, or should I skip ahead to when people first arrived?' And I would gladly answer.

"If, however, your question regards minutia of operational details, then I will have to repeat myself and say that 'while I can tell you about the island, specifics of the business itself are Mr Newport's purview'. The information I have is that the work will involve irregular security details. I do not have the information on who precisely Mr Newport will be asking you to point guns at on any given day.

"But Mr Crow is largely correct. The Huks maintain the same decentralised structures today as when we fought the Japanese. Any individual cell knew little about any other, so that if we were captured and tortured, little could be divulged about the wider operations.

"That said, by external observation there appear to be three main groups."

Kale turns his commlink around, the screen displaying a news story about a terrorist bombing.

"The Pansamantala Panthers are known for traditional terror tactics like kidnapping hostages, IEDs and midnight raids. It is suspected the Panthers were behind the bombing of our power substation which killed eight employees, but that is speculation based on their modus operandi."

He flicks to another news story.

"The Kulog Anak--Thunder Children in my tongue--specialise in magical terrorism. It's believed they summoned the horrifically powerful bog spirit which haunted the factory district for several days before an unknown team of operatives took it out."

Kale brings up a final article.

"Then there are the Araknida--or Spiders. Virtual saboteurs. When the traffic lights fail and a bus slams into an executive's limousine, it is likely their work.

"There are various differences of opinion amongst the groups as to doctrine and who truly represents the Huks. For a time the movement overall was led by the charismatic firebrand Pascha Taruc--a former general in our rebellion when we were against the Japanese--but she has not been seen for two years. It is a small mercy that they are not united under her.

"I personally hope, Mr Coll, that your boast of accomplishing in days what has taken us weeks turns out to be well placed. That would be money well spent for the Newport Group. It is no secret that our conventional forces have failed. That is why I recommended hiring you."

He puts down his beer. Empty.

"Another drink, anyone?"

"Ah--idealism. You've got a memetic problem, then--several large groups of skilled individuals willing to turn their back on their own self interest in favor of ultimately destructive behavior, due to loyalty to a cause. A common problem among the talented poor; as long as they don't have those memes destroyed, their fear of change will keep them blind to the positive change of things like incorporation, electrification, and public education." Coll shakes his head in mock sorrow. "Slaughtering people like that is such a waste."

"But if they're afraid of tomorrow, of losing the tatters of their identity, that's an easy problem to fix. All we'll have to do is make them more afraid of us." He beckons to the bartender with two fingers, giving the group a chance to work over what he just said before continuing. "It has been suggested that I am not responsive to the input of my peers, so I'll leave this decision you, my beloved comrades," he says, struggling unsuccessfully to keep his customary sneer under control. "We can begin by visiting Mr. Newport and finding out just what closet he wants us to check for monsters. Or you could come with me into the jungle and plant the seeds of a true campaign of memetic aggression."

"Ah, thank you bartender, Kale has offered to buy me a bottle of Mothman Ale."

As Vincent continues with his ... rant? Speech? Whatever the hells was happening on the other side of the booth? Noise's brows rise in increasing incredulity and concern.

Is that elf cracked? He sounds cracked. What on earth is he doing?

"Uh, thanks Vincent. I don't know about the rest of you, but I would like to meet Mr. Newport before we go haring off into the jungle."

Via AR message to Vincent:
You want to clue us into what you're doing, chummer? I don't know how biz works for you back home, but we don't usually start negotiations by sounding like a trid supervillain.

Natalya was only half listening as the two men in suits postured and circled around each other...metaphorically, it would have been more entertaining if they were doing so for real...but perked back up as Newport's intermediary turned his attention back towards the rest of them. "Mm? Oh, that is sweet of you but thank you no. I plan on drinking extensively aboard the plane anyway."

This time when she turned to regard the man who had smirkingly commented on her body earlier, Natalya looked him over appraisingly with a long, expressionless sweep of her eyes before speaking again. "I'm sorry, but I am only being paid enough to listen to one man in a suit, and right now? You are not him. Perhaps if you want to make me a better offer," she said with a shrug, "then maybe we can see."

"There is some merit to what you say," she went on, "and I certainly do not mind being feared...though really, I am quite charming once you get to know me," she said with a grin, reaching over to ruffle Stormcrow's hair playfully before the grin vanished as quickly as it had come. "But when we reach Lagu Lagu, what I will do is meet with the man who is paying me to be there, and then I am going to go and check into my hotel. I have spent many hours on an airplane and I am about to spend many more on another airplane, after which my abundant reserves of patience and good cheer are likely to be at a critical low. We can go and make ourselves be feared tomorrow, after room service."

Bounced message? No PAN - no commlink at all?! This elf is really weird.

OOC: Whoops, forgot about that. Sorry!

Stormcrow

The elf bares the mussing of his hair without comment, and returns a smile of his own.

"Of course. I'm sure you're all quite charming."

"I think it probably best if we get some guidance from our employer before we start winning hearts and minds through violence. Learn where Newport wants us focusing our efforts? Else, with an enemy as diffused as this seems to be, we end up crushing heads all over the jungle while leaving the heart intact."

"Plus, I have magic stuff to unpack."

"And there is a considerable amount of jungle," Kale adds. "Shall we find our boarding gate, then? I trust you are travelling unarmed. With my contacts at the airport, personal augments can be explained and will not be an issue--a number of my people carry such additions as scars of the war. But even I cannot smuggle an uzi on board a plane."

"I am as unarmed as I ever am," Natalya said, which wasn't "completely unarmed" but anyone who wanted to divest her entirely of weaponry was going to be taking their life into their own hands. "If someone attacks us onboard the airplane, eh, we can just have him kill them then," she went on, gesturing towards Stormcrow before waving her hand in Vincent's direction. "Or maybe he can talk them to death. And I am ready to depart when the rest of you are, provided that the rest of you are ready to depart quickly. The sooner we leave the sooner we arrive and the sooner we arrive the sooner we begin getting paid."

Noise

"Yeah, I'm ready to go. I don't suppose this plane has troll-sized seats? Last time I flew into Canton, I had neck cramps for a week."

Noise sucks down the last of his San Miguel and zaps some nuyen into Lani's virtual tip jar. Never hurts to be friendly to a bartender.

Does this plane have Matrix access of some kind? Noise would probably like to do some Matrix searches for additional information about the island before we touch down - maybe even get in touch with Lo Pan and let him know I'm in town.

The bartender performs a polite bow towards Noise, thanking him for his tip as you prepare to leave. Kale takes one of those long, loving last puffs of a smoker about to board a plane and plunges his noxious cigarette out in the ashtray, then bids you to follow him through to the privacy of the frosted-glass walls of the Mabuhay Club frequent flyer's lounge. Here snoots in suits lounge around while part-time model waiters ensure no one's glass is ever empty. But you are not here for the service. You are here for the much shorter lines through security.

Kale approaches the young security guard who brandishes a hand-held metal detector. The young man smiles broadly as Kale approaches, taking the fixer's hand and shaking it warmly. Kale asks in Tagolog about the wellbeing of the young man's six children by name. After they are finished their cheery discussion about their families, Kale's voice gets low and gentle as he puts an arm around the young man's shoulder while he gestures towards your group. Nail picks up a few of the fixer's words including "veteran" and "wounded" and "replacement".

The young man nods understandingly, and respectfully waves you through the checkpoint without incident.

Five minutes later you're finding your seats onboard the twin-prop plane. The plane's PAN offers a little primer on the island including a few common phrases in Tagalog like "which way to the church?" and "what time is mass held?". The in-flight information says the flight will take about an hour. The plane's matrix uplink is slow but workable.

You have time to run some searches. If Noise drops into VR and buys hits for this purpose, you can make threshold 12 for "limited interest or not publicised" on a few topics. What are you interested in finding out?

Amongst the suits, vacationers, and fly-in, fly-out workers, you spot a couple of figures who look like they just might be in your line of work. The red-headed ork seated next to Nail cursing in lilted Gaelic after his cyberlimb has just accidentally ripped his seatbelt out of its socket is one. The other, Rodney recognises as he takes a seat.

Her street name is Suit. Social infiltration and wetwork specialist out of Pittsburg. A former-Shiawase Mr Johnson turned bad, if the stories are to be believed. What could she be up to on the island?

Noise

Settling into his seat, Noise snugged the fiberoptic line into the engraved datajack at his left temple - one thought later, the drone of the plane and chatter of his fellow passengers dropped away as the VR interface flooded his mind with synthetic sensation. It's tempting to kill the limiters and let the sim interface run hot, just for a little kick in the head, but there's business to do.

A small temple, formed of brass, steel and jade, sits atop a rocky spire on the back of a great dragon turtle as it swims slowly through an endless dark ocean. Glittering points of light pulse to a binary rhythm all around, and the temple itself glows with the reflected light of a neon rivulet of data that pools and splashes through its grounds. This is Noise's home in the Matrix - his commlink's custom-sculpted node. He's spent a lot of time getting it just right.

The paired guardian lions flanking the temple entrance shake to life as Noise initializes his icon, clouds of phosphorescent steam venting from cybernetic jaws and hydraulic muscles. The lions move in unison, shoulder to shoulder, to the glowing data-stream and touch the waters with sharp-clawed paws. An array of glowing ideograms flows upwards from the water their touch, flowing into browsing parameters and trideo feeds as the custom search engine begins its work.

Thought I'd show off Noise's Matrix iconography - hope it's not too over the top. I'll just go ahead and buy those hits rather than roll. I'm looking for information on the following topics, in priority order:

-Our client, Mr. Newport and his company
-Recent rebel activity
-Other corporate activity on the island
-Sources for our supply needs - black markets, cyber-clinics and talisleggers
-Anything passing for a nightlife or social hangouts on the island

I would also like to drop emails to my contacts, letting Sparky know that I'm alive and well and will be in touch, and letting Lo Pan know that I'm on my way to the island and would like to set up a meeting to discuss business in the near future.

OOC: Should I write the emails out? I can if you like, but I've had a long day and am kind of brain-fried. I'd probably have to let those wait until tomorrow.
