One of my favorite things to do is list details of things he's done, but say that a republican senator or congressman did them. You'd be stunned at how many people are like, "Well, I'm alright with that!" Then you can watch their eyes bug out when you pull the rug out. It's like that poll that found that people who had individual aspects of Obamacare described to them were overwhelmingly in favor of it, but when it was presented just as "Obamacare" they hated it.

I want to post the worst stuff I've gotten away with saying (I literally have not had a single person call me out for saying any of the really, really horrible stuff I've said and usually just get several likes and, on occasion, an admin literally singling me out to agree with me) but I want them to meet me half-way to ban me. I'm saving it all for posterity, though. Once I get banned I'll post it all here.

Interestingly (but unsurprisingly), it shows Obama and Romney as basically the same person.

Obama is just a little lower because he's advocated for the rights of immigrants and homosexuals, but even then doesn't take a hard stance on it. And in spite of that he's still well on the authoritarian side of the spectrum because of things like the NDAA and TSA. I ended up at -9, -6.67.

That test would be alot more accurate if it included a z axis and didn't use the word libertarian to describe social liberalism. However they are a bit fun to take. My score,Economic Left/Right: -7.88, Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.33. I consider my self a socialist so I guess that's about right, sorta.

Yeah I'm at a loss for why the word "libertarian" came to exist when "liberal" is a word that already means that. I've had someone try to explain it to me as being an extremist liberal, but doesn't that just mean anarchist? As far as I can tell the only people who identify as "libertarians" are people that think government intervention is okay up to the point where they most benefit from it, and beyond that it shouldn't do anything and anyone left out of that umbrella should just fend for themselves.

I'm not up on politics much but a wiki search gives a couple of simple definitions I think point out that difference: "Libertarianism is a set of related political philosophies that uphold liberty as the highest political end. This includes emphasis on the primacy of individual liberty, political freedom, and voluntary association." / "Liberalism is a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality." So, in my ultra amateur reading, libertarian = liberty for me; liberal = liberty for everyone.

Liberalism is "stop being an rear end in a top hat to people." Libertarianism is "stop making me not be an rear end in a top hat to people." A liberal wants black people to have the freedom to sit wherever they want to. A libertarian wants public transport corporations to have the freedom to tell black people to sit wherever they want them to.

All the hair-splitting among libertarians regarding initiation of force, minarchism vs. anarcho-capitalism, etc. notwithstanding, yeah, that's pretty much it. Also: "gently caress you, got mine."

It is not my goal to perpetuate this derail, but I thought this might be worth sharing. It's a pretty comprehensive takedown of libertarianism--or some strong versions of it, anyway. "Libertarians" are not a homogeneous lot, and "libertarianism" is not a monolithic political philosophy, so you can't really paint them with too broad of a brush. There are plenty of ways in which my own views overlap with some versions of libertarianism. But when it comes to the growing hordes of internet libertarians (who are frequently an-cap), I think this critique applies to quite a few of them:

Glibertarianism, indeed.

What is funny is that the political compass actually has Gary Johnson, and previously Ron Paul, right in the middle of the Authoritarian/Social LiberialismLibertarian scale and, at least for Gary Johnson, far to the right of everybody else. (9.5/0.0)

I got banned on the Glenn Beck thread a few pages back, so that very well could have done it. Would be nice if they actually told you why they were banning you. But it would also be nice if their site wasn't so all around lovely.

I've had luck with simply telling people I will bet them large amounts of money that Obama will not ban guns by the end of his second term. They back off immediately. As usual, low-information ultra-conservatives talk a lot but when you ask them to act they reveal how cowardly they are.

When Mod8 was new (and maybe didn't actually have mod powers yet ), he was known to give about 3-5 "final" warnings before obvious trolls were banned. Whether that was banning them himself, or calling over someone with real mod capabilities, we may never know.

There's actually a version of the political spectrum that does exactly this. Here's two versions of a 3D political chart. http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2005/7/7/281/05051 http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2003/6/14/45425/6208 It's still not perfect and has to leave out some political ideologies; maybe someone somewhere is working on a four-dimensional tesseract that can accurately depict all political positions on a chart.
