Kinda surprised it hasn't been posted (or did I miss it? I looked back a couple pages.) but Jason Collins came out as the first openly gay NBA player. Mother Jones has put together some of the support he's received, and it's pretty awesome.

Kuha O'Case is a piano player who's talent allows him to play back a song nearly note for note after hearing it only once. This is awesome in and of itself, but he's also totally blind. So Kuha heard the song "Crystallize" by Lindsey Stirling, who herself is a very talented violin player that has created a huge following on Youtube after getting the boot from America's Got Talent. He decided to cover it. He happened to be in Lindsey's home state of Utah promoting a project and trying to get funding for his own piano and studio time to produce a CD. Lindsey apparently got a hold of him after hearing his piano cover and asked if he would like to perform a few songs with her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_6J39c1ycU The look on his face throughout the whole song tells the entire story.

I don't think I've seen anyone post this athlete who gave up his career to extend the life of a complete stranger. Also I just saw something touching but didn't think to take pictures... I was visiting family in a tiny lakeside town this week and there were fluffy blue bows tied absolutely everywhere, storefronts, houses and balconies etc. I found out it was all purchased in support of a 16 year old girl in the community who has leukemia. The place looked like it was getting ready for a festival it was so decked out. I thought it was really great to have such beautiful support for her to see, as well as the donations.

My friend has an awesome dog. He adopted him after the Humane Society posted his picture up. He almost didn't get him because someone else wanted him too. Jax. My friend has really changed his attitude for the better since adopting him. It really is nice to see how animals can have such an impact on humans.

No pictures, but since my cat recently passed, I thought I'd share her story. My older sister was 4 and visiting our grandmother one town over one day when she heard a ton of crying from under the neighbor's deck. It turns out a cat had littered there, but left the kittens a couple days before. Only one of the six kittens were left alive, a little female calico who had lost an ear and had a broken leg. From the looks of it, it seems a feral dog or some carnivore went for the litter and injured her and killed her brothers and sisters. My sister brought the cat home, and after feeding the little girl from a bottle, we took her to the vet. The vet had to remove the remains of the mangled ear and treat a truly horrible worm and flea infestation, but Sunflower the Calico made a full recovery otherwise. She grew up into the prettiest little cat with a tortoise-shell pattern and loved everyone, including our dogs. Sunflower passed a few days ago in her sleep from old age. She was 22, and she'll always be the best cat we've ever had. It's really worth it to take in stray animals, you'll save their life and give them a new chance.

I'm not really a cat person but my mother's always neutered and adopted neighborhood strays, with most of them continuing to live outside in little cat huts with heating lamps for the winter. I did really love this one little runt I called deathwish, because when I pulled up in my car she would run up and try to nuzzle my car tire. I'd have to get out of the car, pick her up, sit back down in the driver's seat with her on my lap, and drive the rest of the way into the driveway like that for fear of running her over. She was no bigger than the size of my fist, but we took her indoors and cared for her until she stopped breathing one day before she turned 2. I wasn't home for it, and the vet never really gave us an answer. We didn't have a post-mortem done, but little deathwish did have all her shots and was given a clean bill of health at her last visit to the vet. Though, she was so tiny, she could've passed away for a number of reasons. I still love that cat whenever I think of her I doubt I'll ever have a pet cat again because I'm pretty allergic, but I'll never forget how loving and innocent she was. I'm tearing up now thinking about it, actually.

I'm not a believer, but that's still beautiful. I don't have a lot of experience with pitbulls, but ever since I started volunteering at my local Humane Society I've walked and played with about a dozen of the pits there and they are some of the sweetest dogs I've seen, always happy to see you and gentle enough to eat out of your hand. The worst any of them has gotten with me is just being plain old dog-reactive, that is barking at and trying to get at other dogs, which is the case for pretty much every dog there to the point where it's policy to not walk more than one dog at a time (this includes staggering the walkers and using multiple trails so that two walkers don't encounter each other.) Speaking of the HS, I only started volunteering a couple months ago, but my uncle started dog-walking there years ago and he told me about how the place used to be packed with dogs all the time, every kennel filled. I mention this because when I go it can seem like a ghost town in terms of dogs, usually less than half of the kennels have dogs in them at any given time. I've also been told by the employees that our HS has such a high adoption rate that we ship dogs up from California (we're in Washington) regularly so that we can take the load off of some of the busier shelters there. I'm still new at this, but i'd say that's not bad for a no-kill shelter
