Do they ever plan to build the side characters more? There are plenty of fantastic side characters that could be an interesting part of the story if they were focused on a little more. Having all these great unique characters is fine, but they don't really improve the story in any way as they are now.

This is somehow less weird than the whole Miku Dominos thing. The Dominos president in that was grinning like a titan though...

All that smoke must be coming from the giant oven. The humans are actually fighting the titans to take control of the world's largest pizza oven.

That pretty much. I said it on the last page, but Mikasa's style is to deal in ultimatums. In her "speech", her ultimatum was to either fight for the chance to survive or die without ever trying. Another perfect example is when she was dealing with the rich merchant guy that was blocking the path. Her extreme nature requires Armin to exist to counteract it.

Zettace posted:No, she didn't. The most she did was convince Jean to stand up as the leader. Sure, the action of motivating Jean got everyone moving but you can hardly say she was the one to "rally everyone". In the end the credit to motivating everyone goes to Jean. If you watch the scene again, it was dead silence after her speech (if anything, everyone was shocked at how crazy she was) and there were no signs of anyone wanting to follow Mikasa until Jean took a stand. And before she arrived, Jean knew what he had to do but was still sitting there in a useless, depressed heap. Sasha also knew what they had to do and tried to get everyone to do it and got absolutely nowhere. Sometimes, you need the crazy.

Or, you could have had someone smack his arm and say "Jean, we gotta move" which would have had an the same effect. Mikasa is not a leader, and has no oratory ability. I don't know how we're still on this.

Jean is in love with Mikasa and on some part he probably acted because of that. See: Their first scene together. But yeah. A slap from anyone would have probably jolted him out of it.

Just caught up with this series and it is amazing. I dropped the Manga after the first chapter because I wanted to go into the anime unspoiled, and I'm glad I did. I haven't really watched any anime in awhile, but I was hooked on this one from the start. Really looking forward to seeing where they go with this. Also, I don't know if this came up before but the scene in Episode 1 where they try to save Eren's mother was disturbingly similar to a scene from Barefoot Gen. I dunno if that was intentional, but if so, kudos to the directors for having the balls to do that.

It was intentional and other people noticed, too. I also like the scene.

Both scenes use the same music, and it's the only time that music is used in the entire series. It might be an obvious observation but it was something that I liked. Vogel im Kafig is a really powerful song.

Yea, that first episode on a whole was fantastic. Honestly I'm really starting to lose interest unless they start putting things together. They have so many great ideas set up and so many fantastic side characters with great potential, but it feels like we've been slugging through mud for the last few episodes. Also, I'm still undecided on Eren's insta-titan ability.

Erin reminds Armin that "you are a strong". Cheered up, he helps Mikasa make a pizza! The next scene begins with a background character wearing the pizza hut hat.

I think Anthony Bourdain touched on this when No Reservations went to Hokkaido in 2011. They put corn in their ramen up there, and he figures that it was brought over by US servicemembers during the occupation and just sort of stuck around.

I've been thinking - one of the titans faced by the commander of the Recon Corps in episode 9 screamed when it was stabbed in the eyes, covered them while in obvious pain, and its blood didn't evaporate afterwards. Other titans didn't react to injury in any way. What are the odds of some of the abnormal titans being piloted? What if the pilot's blood remains even when the titan evaporates?

Probably all the abnormal titans are being piloted. Both the colossal titan and Titan Eren had that lightning smoke poo poo when transforming/appearing.

I just realized I never commented on the last episode: I love how, since there were no Titans or combat in this episode, they spent all their fancy budget on Armin's speech/salute. It was beautiful. Armin may be kind of a cliche archetype, but I still like how well done he is. He realizes his logical argument is lost on this guy, and immediately switches tactics and makes a noble and moving plea. He's a logical character done right- none of this stupid "I don't understand emotions because I'm logical," the dude can logically understand emotions and use them just as well as anyone who's existed in the real world.

It's also interesting to see that Armin failed. Even with his passionate plea and well though-out arguments, they would have died if it wasn't for the intervention of Pixis. It kinda fits the tone of the show. No matter what you do (in the fight against the Titans), you're only delaying the inevitable - unless the rules of the game change.
