NOTE: first ten posts are reserved for people who claim they have successfully quit the game even if they’re lying.

Marvel: Avengers Alliance (MAA for short) is one of those socialist network free to play type game thingys. It combines the turn-based RPG style of gameplay used by the old Final Fantasy games with a collect-them-all mentality like Pokemon as you gather 40 50 60 a whole bunch of heroes to battle bad guys, who in the spirit of comics/video games eventually become playable characters. Maybe. It’s fun, even if we spend most of our time bitching endlessly about it.

It’s available to play through Facebook (where the game originally launched), Playdom’s website, and through an iOS app that recently launched, with an Android version to be launched “who the hell knows when”. There’s not a ton of differences between the three; gifting is different with the different ways of adding allies and the iOS app is a year behind, but it is worth noting that none of the three ways to play talk to each other. Figure out one way to play and stick with it.

GAMEPLAY
The battles are 3 v 3 max, although you will face battles with different waves of enemies. It’s based off a five-way rock/paper/scissors system, with a neutral class for those who don’t want to feel special. The classes, shamelessly stolen from the last thread:

Blaster - Strong against bruisers. Upon being attacked by a bruiser, they will automatically crit on their next attack. Weak against tacticians
Bruiser - Strong against scrappers. They get an ENGRAGED buff whenever they attack or are attacked by a scrapper, which increases their stats and can let them hit really goddamn hard. Weak against blasters
Infiltrator - Strong against tacticians. They counterattack all attacks for a full round after hitting or being hit by a tactician.Weak against scrappers
Scrappers - Strong against infiltrators. After attacking or being attacked by an infiltrator, hey follow up their next attack with another attack regardless of stamina or status effects. Weak against bruisers.
Tacticians - Strong against blasters. When attacking or being attacked by a blaster they gain an immediate follow up turn. Weak against Infiltrators.
Generalists - No weaknesses or strengths. This is what you start out as, though you have the option to swap that out later for any of the other classes.

The in-game tutorial does a pretty good job of hand-holding through the gameplay, and a helpful WEAK/STRONG icon will appear above anyone’s head when setting up a team or an attack until you know the system.

STORY?
We just concluded Season 1, in which a magical maguffin called ISO-8 came from space and did something or other. A fancy-dan space rock, it’s loosely defined capabilities are seemingly limitless, to letting your punchmen punch harder all the way to making your punchmen not be punched as hard, and everything in-between.
SHIELD and a group of villains called the Syndicate all raced to gather up as much of this ISO-8 as possible, which meant fighting the Wrecking Crew every 20 minutes. In the end, and I’ll spoiler this why the hell not, the Syndicate ended up being a ruse for Doctor Doom to take control, which was seemingly thwarted by SHIELD for the time being. They did manage to resurrect the Red Skull, for what it’s worth. There’s no real twists and turns, it’s a loose collection of occasionally witty dialogue to bind the missions together.

Season 2 is launching ASAP who the gently caress knows when, and all we know is that it’s going to be more of the same. We move over to England and Moon Knight/Squirrel Girl are going to be available and that’s about it for solid information. There was a teaser image full of Z-list villains but who knows how legit that image is. TBH, we’re scrapping the bottom of the heroes barrel at times with Shatterstar and Thundra playable, so don’t put anything or anyone past Playdom. Minus Namor since they don’t have his rights apparently.

SpecOps
Special Operations (or SpecOps for short), are limited time side-missions that revolve around a character being introduced to the game. They can be daunting if you are new to the game and underleveled and/or don’t have the friends available to get enough of the ISO-8 needed to play the missions (and more on the currencies/gifting later), but once you’re going they’re not too hard to get through. The most frustrating part about them is that the game loves to make you spend Command Points (another currency we’ll hit later) on new heroes when you’re trying to save up for someone decent, and the hero available isn’t always worth the hassle. Still, they’re a fun diversion from the regular grind, and we do mean grind, and there’s a more than reasonable timeframe for the mission to be completed provided you don’t go in completely unprepared. No word if this is going to change for Season 2, though I doubt it. If you don’t finish the SpecOp in time that set of missions/character is locked away, but SpecOps characters are occasionally re-released for short term purchase.

There’s also a side deal with the SpecOps on how to get characters but we’ll hit that up later.

PVP
Don’t play PVP.

If you do insist on playing PVP, understand that it’s a frustrating moneysink in which the primary benefits go either to cheaters or those who are willing to crowbar open their wallets and dump far more money into a F2P game then they really should, all to gain some benefits that are quickly rendered obsolete by the game’s constant power creep. There’s also less defense than an All-Star game, so you’ll win the majority of your attacks and lose to everyone you defend against. It’s a noted benefit to the game that there isn’t just one or two god-tier teams that everyone plays as, and there are a number of different characters that are viable in PVP, though there are certainly top and bottom tiers.

PVP can either be ran as a practice, for seeing how a team works and is always available, or as a Season fight, a short-term tournament like SpecOps, with rewards at the end, the highest being a new character to those who cheat/spend their way to the top. The good news for the rest of us is that the character is available for general purchase in a month’s time, which makes life a little less frustrating. It’s best to do your daily battles for a reward and leave, but that’s up to you.

CURRENCIES
There’s too many of them, plain and simple, but we got what we got.

Silver – Used for buying things. You get silver from winning fights, completing deploys, visiting friends, picking your nose, etc… Early on, you will be short on silver. This won’t last long, especially if you add allies. Once you have plenty of silver you’ll be fine, and if you play on Facebook we have a Macro that will end your money troubles, unless Playdom breaks it again.

SHIELD Points – Also used for buying things, it adds an unnecessary layer of complication and really has no reason to exist. If you add allies, SHIELD Points will never be an issue. If you want to solo it, it will be an issue. Let that be a warning.

Gold – The only currency form that can be directly purchased by the player. Gold is used for buying things, whether it’s limited time weapons or items, or converted into other forms of currency. The game does a decent job of giving out free gold, such as through leveling up, four-starring missions, and roulettes, and as long as you don’t need to update your PVP items every time a new one comes out or buy every limited time weapon, you’ll be able to amass a decent savings. If you do feel the need to buy gold, either wait for a gold sale or use one of the side options.

Command Points – Only used for buying characters. The point total varies, and we’ll get to that in a second.

Unstable ISO-8 – Used to play the SpecOp missions. The game gives you around 440-ish to start, and more can be gained through gifting, item drops in combat, roulette spins, visiting allies, and through the daily spin. What used to be a chore has gotten significantly easier, but again if you have allies.

Lockboxes – Recently introduced, lockboxes originally were a side component of SpecOps where a Group Boss villain (so far Ultron and Red Skull) would be available on your SpecOp mission page and your allies’ pages, and could be fought by yourself and all your friends. Lockboxes contents can vary, from worthless crap to ISO-8’s to CPs, but what we want are the Comic Book Covers. Collect 8 of those and you’ll unlock a new character. There’s four different types and can be purchased with gold at any time, even outside of a SpecOps. Playdom introduced a PVP-lockbox, designed to be given out through PVP battles, and none of us would have bothered with it had it not been :itjb: as the reward.

CHARACTERS
The game started with around 30 characters and now boasts around 60, which range from the expected (Spidey, Snikt-Bubs) to the C-List (Spider-Woman, Sif) to Shatterstar (Shatterstar). The game starts you with Iron Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye, with varying price ranges for the rest. The majority will come at 90 CP, even if they aren’t worth the cost. Characters from the PVP tournaments cost 135 CP, and characters from SpecOps cost 200 and are available for a short window.

There are also different costumes for us to play pretty princess dress-up with our heroes. Also using CPs, they can only be acquired after obtaining a hero, and they give extra benefits while also allowing a hero to run a different class. These also vary in price, with the class-change outfit costing a bit more. Some of the outfits have been limited-time only (Avengers, AvX, Iron Man 3) although they’re occasionally re-released, and some heroes have more outfits than others, with a good handful not having any. Luke Cage’s Power Man outfit isn’t in the game and it’s a loving crime.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Like all F2P games, the goal is to give you enough for free to get you hooked and ready to spend your stacks. This can be circumvented by whoring yourself out to us/random strangers. Playing by yourself, you’ll quickly run out of resources and find yourself unable to complete SpecOps or do more than the minimum. If you’d rather spend money, that’s on you. If you’d rather ally up, you’ll get a free leg-up on the competition. I personally haven’t spent a dime on this game and I’m nearly at the level cap, with every released character and a swole in-game bankroll. How you want to play is up to you.

If you do go with allies, we only gift Unstable ISO-8 and Energy. Everything else will drop in combat or is easily gained from allies. It’s tempting to gift SHIELD points at first, but visit ally pages and you’ll soon have more than enough.

If you want to know which character to grab next, see who is needed to run an Epic Mission, which is the 6th mission of each chapter. Once you’ve gotten all of those, see who is needed in a particular SpecOps, who is needed for an Epic Boss, and then who you want to play as. You’re highly encouraged to collect them all, even if it means buying Hank Pym.

Buy Storm ASAP if you're new, she lets you fight Magento in mission 4-4 which is the best way to grind command points.

I still get Shwarma as gifts regularly. I never accept it.

Someone spoke of making a list, but we haven't done one yet. To tell the truth, I don't think there's more than a handful of posters from here on Playdom. Here's my profile (just click the button!), at least.

What I did at first was send friend requests to random strangers in the site's sidebar, and it did the trick. Honestly, for all the interacting you normally do, it doesn't make much of a difference at all. Do note that it takes a while for the allies bar to refresh.

Here's my Playdom profile. But yeah, because it's not Facebook, you can have a lot of friends you don't ever have to know or care anything about, and who will know or care nothing about you.

I think the Playdom version would be easier for a newcomer. I do Facebook and Playdom, because I'm using the PD version to live my Avengers life without having made the mistakes of my youth. Specifically, re-uniting the Claremont-era X-Men. (Although I'm still trying to collect Defenders, so if Hellcat finally makes it, blame me.)

Team-Forest-Tree-Dog:
Smashing your way into our hearts one skylight at a time

A few things that come to mind for any new people:

Gold
Save your gold for either Gold only weapons/gadgets or buying people in an emergency when there's a time limit you need to hold to (eg: If you need someone to unlock a special ops character and the deadline will expire soon. Everything else you need you can get with a bit of effort, like extra CP or by waiting a few hours like training time. When I first started I didn't have any friends playing and I wasted gold on slots for upgrading my planes. Complete waste of Gold.

Cheracters
- In terms of what characters you want to get first, you need to keep in mind a) Getting characters that will help you win battles b) Getting characters that will unlock epic boss battles (Including Spec ops bosses) c) Getting enough characters to unlock additional chapters. How you balance this is up to you.

- This link talks about the characters you will need to unlock the epic boss battles: http://forum.playdom.com/showthread.php?141477-IN-DEPTH-GUIDE-New-Method-of-CP-Farming-(Maximizing-CP-Energy-per-run)
Epic boss battles are useful because they give you access to unique, sometimes very useful, weapons or gadgets. They also give you two rolls on roulette, with the epic boss roulette having the chance of getting higher CP rewards than you can usually get, meaning that certain levels are far more efficient in terms of CP gained per energy spent than others.

- Powerful characters:
Blasters: Doctor Strange
Bruisers: Captain Britain, Hercules or Captain America in Bruiser alternate costume)
Infiltrator: Psylocke, Invisible Woman with alternate Costume, Nightcrawler with Alternate Costume, Kitty Pryde with alternate Costume and Tigra
Scrapper: Union Jack, Wolverine
Tactician: Captain America with costume

While a lot of these characters are 90 CP, they're far more effective than getting lots of weaker character like Luke Cage, Sif, Iron Fist, Thing, etc.

Getting Hawkeye and Black Widow their Alternate costumes will also make them very effective.

Facebook
Get the macro from the goon facebook group that will automate your flight deck and add a load of goons. Doing so will mean that you pretty much always have people ready to train to a higher level and enough money and shield points to go through with it.

PVP
At low levels you have a decent chance of getting high rankings in PVP because you're only matched against people of similar levels and no-one else at low levels will have a clue what they're doing. Spend some gold on limited edition PVP boosting items or failing that get money for the best non-limited edition items you can buy. Always have your most recent armoury level researched as well as the most recent ISOs, which you will need to socket into your main PVP team. Research the highest level armour you can buy Put together a team from the list of characters above (Which isn't comprehensive, doesn't take into account specific team-ups and doesn't take into account the PVP meta-game). Keep your heroes as high a level as possible. Probably the most cost effective high-tier PVP team you can put together is Phoenix and Kitty Pryde, both with their alternate costumes. Kitty is immune to 95% of attacks, will do high damage counters if she is attacked and with Phoenix's mind-link she will intercept, dodge and then counter pretty much everything that is thrown at her.

Spec Ops
Special Ops will be happening more often than not. These give you (mostly) one-off opportunities to get (mostly) limited edition characters by completing 25 tasks, one of which is to fight a Spec Ops Epic Boss. This requires having specific characters, often a couple of hundred CP worth of the most recently released characters.

Unrelatedly, I've been sitting at Spec Ops task 17 for nearly three days now. At this rate the last Red Skull I need to fight will be my own. Any way to force a refresh of the allies bar, come to think?

It can't be stressed, visit you allies daily. If you join the facebook group, you can easily have 50 allies in a few days. You can get around 50k silver just from visiting them, not to mention during spec ops unstable ISOs and lost pages, which are a pretty useful consumable; it clears your team of status aliments and puts a small regen on you.

On the other hand, on Playdom you can get to 200 allies pretty quickly. And nothing is wrong with shwarma.

There's nothing wrong with shwarma, but it's only a healing item, albeit a very useful one. But once you've got about 50 or so, you're fine, and they drop from ally visits (along with Lost Pages of the Vishanti, which group heal over several rounds and wipe debuffs when first used.) I'd rather get ISOs/energy from my allies.

Also, Playdom said they needed more time for Season 2 (excuse was new features at the last second, which is code for "oh god we're not gonna get this done on time or something's really broken quick someone think of something"), so we're TBA on Season 2. I'm personally guessing Thursday, but who knows with Playdom.

Angel got metal wings when he was brainwashed into becoming one of Apocalypse's Horsemen. Then after a while he got cured and got his feathers back, but then somewhere along the line he realized the Archangel persona was still inside him and his metal wings came back. Rescue is way too overpowered right now. Her magnetic defensive bullshit should not work against stealthy attacks, but it does and I can't ever crit or kill the biotch thanks to her self heal and panacea response too.

If you're not using something for buff removal she'll eat your lunch. If you are, she becomes a worthless lump of minor utility.
