reading the wikipedia page for terry gilliam's upcoming "the zero theorem" makes it sound like the terry gilliamest film possible

quote:

Qohen Leth is an eccentric and reclusive computer genius who lives in an Orwellian corporate world and suffers from existential angst. Under the instruction of a shadowy figure known only as "Management", Qohen works to solve the "Zero Theorem" – a mathematical formula which will finally determine whether life has any meaning. Qohen's work in the burnt-out chapel that serves as his home is interrupted by visits from Bainsley, a seductive woman, and Bob, the teenage son of Management.
i wonder if it will feature giants, huge things suspended in air, horrifying masks, and a wraparound theme about the ~~importance of imagination~~?

Literature is not exhaustible, for the sufficient and simple reason that no single book is. A book is not an isolated being: it is a relationship, an axis of innumerable relationships.

I think Brazil took a lot out of him, long term. He was so stressed during the making that he couldn't walk for a while

movie gives him a lifetime pass, imo, i still see his more mediocre movies

Most of the uk sci fi authors (banks, stross, ken Macleod, Peter f Hamilton maybe except with a juvenile interest in sex) seem to be unambiguous socialists.

actually now I think about it all Peter f Hamiltons books have racially segregated colonies because people couldn't figure out how to get along so maybe not so much on the decent views

fear and loathing was pretty excellent. bonus points for making a coherent, watchable adaptation of an incoherent "unfilmable" book that manages to be entirely faithful to the source.

but yeah, the last three movies - brothers grimm, tideland, imaginarium - mmm, not looking too good there

I liked The Scar better than Perdido but yeah his writing is not easy to get into. He does have really cool ideas though.

Also gotta give him props for making the protagonist a fat guy; that's rare enough to be notable in itself.

Just a funny av. Not a redtext or an own ok.
grimm was just unremarkable and mediocre in every way, but gilliam didn't write that, so i can give him a pass for that. parnassus was an awful, messy cgi shitfest though, the only good thing in that movie was tom waits.

haven't seen tideland and dont even know whats it about, but just based on that super awkward intro clip by gilliam i have zero desire to see the whole thing

part of me wonders if luc besson (the guy that did Fifth Element) would be able to tackle Dune really well.
