Nothing any normal streetbike can't handle, but fun to mess around on anyways. Then you ride over to the inperation for the name, a pretty good creek crossing where Old Baltimore Rd crosses Tenmile Creek. If you hit it above about 15 mph you'll get a good cleaning to get rid of any dust you gathered during the gravel stretches. Then you can stop at the turn off next to the bridge over Little Seneca to dry yourself off in the sun. This is of interest to me. I generally ride a bunch on the weekend around VA, but am up for anything really. I need some new routes! Location: Rosslyn Bike: '12 Honda cbr250 Years ridden: ½ Down for: Any rides that aren't on the beltway (because I like life), meetups, track fun Also: do people usually use headsets or something for group rides? I have a Sena headset that I usually pair with my phone for music, but I have no idea how easy it is to set up an ad hoc network with other riders.

I've just started riding. Right now I'm just commuting and doing some short rides after work/weekends, but would love to get out and explore some more fun routes. Remember, the new HOT lanes on the beltway are open to and free for motorcycles. They're awesome and so unused that they're not really scary. Located in Springfield My Warrior has more displacement than all your puny 250's combined.  I've got a few bikes, and usually pick whichever one works best with whoever I'm riding with. (Usually the Honda when it's not spraying oil from a head bolt.  )Been riding since 2005. I'm down for riding wherever, hanging out in/around the city, track days, whatever people come up with is cool. They're not long, but you can go back and forth and turn at various intersections through Clifton off 123. I usually take Clifton Road through historic to Henderson to Hampton and turn around at 123. There's a few decent roads out near Occoquan, but nothing spectacular. Things like Bristow Road can be fun if you don't get stuck behind anyone. The road HNasty posted is less than an hour away if you take 66 and there isn't traffic. Once you get to about that 45-60 minutes outside of the city there are nice roads pretty much everywhere. Inside that range I've been driving up and down Beach Drive and Sligo Creek Pkwy until I feel comfortable enough to take a longer ride out to where there are nicer drives. Both of those roads are ok if you're content not to go above about 40-45. Oh and you have to pay attention since they are closed/have restrictions on the weekend/rush hour.

Sounds like I need to target roads a bit better; a lot of these are no further out than the roads I normally ride on, but they look like way more fun. And yeah – Rock Creek Pkwy to Beach Drive is super fun, but you lose some of the best bits during the weekend closures. I hadn't heard of Sligo Creek Pkwy before, I may give that a shot this weekend.

There are lots of good rides withing 1 hour of DC and if you're willing to expand your area out to 2 hours, there is some of the best riding available anywhere in the country.

Awesome! I could use some good local advice. I'm not an offroady type or speed demon, but if people feel like doing some leisurely riding about the backroads, pick some arbitrary barbecue joint or local sight to stare at to make it a mission, I'm up. Location: Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights Bike: Currently bikeless since some dickbag set my Ninja 500 on fire a week ago (as detailed in this thread). I'm 90% sure I'm getting an SV650 once I figure out more secure parking Years ridden: ~2 years, just took MSF Intermediate Down for: slow-ish group rides, backroads sightseeing, general douchebag hipster socialising in DC This thread comes at a good time: if anyone has a suggestion on how to find safe indoor motorcycle parking in the Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights area, as soon as I can lock on decent parking and the Geico check comes in I'll be buying my replacement bike.

Yeah, if your building doesn't have a garage I can only think of one public garage in the area which is on the street behind all the bars on 18th. If I remember correctly it's a Colonial Parking place, and I think they tend to do monthly parking at most locations, but have no idea how much it'd cost. Probably a lot.

Modern Classics in DC always gets great reviews as far as I've seen, but their wait is pretty insane. I've been taking my bikes to Myers Cycle in Kensington, MD, for a couple years and those are great guys. A bit expensive, but so is everything, and they give me a discount every once in a while. The owner Deep gives me great advice even when I'm buying parts elsewhere and doing my own work. I'd highly recommend them. Probably if you told them Sam with the Concours sent you they'd even know who I was.

Any of you tried Coleman Powersports for service? I have a Honda bike and they're a Honda dealership so I figured I'd be lazy and use them. I am currently 700 miles past my 600 mile service

Some independent shops in the area: Gaithersburg, MD: Cyclemax USA and RAM Cycles Chantilly, VA: Brooks Cycles Sterling, VA: RnR Cycles I've only been to Cyclemax and RAM but I've heard good things about the other two as well. Also going to add my info: Location: Baltimore, MD but I frequently ride in the general Baltimore/DC/Frederick area and occasionally into W VA and NoVa as well. Bike: 2012 Ninja 1000 Years ridden: 4.5+ Down for: Country roads, the few twisty roads in this area, daylong rides, trying to get into trackdays at some point as well

I think highways are pretty much your only option. Theres Rt 1 north, but then you'll have to deal with stoplights and cars constantly left turning in front of you. I assume you want to avoid 495 and I-95? I frequently ride between Gaithersburg and downtown Baltimore and I'll take the ICC (MD 200) to bypass 495 and then go up 29 (Columbia Pike) to I-70, then just take I-695 to I-83.

The guys at Crossroads Cycle in Falls Church (Near Bailey's Crossroads) are absolutely the best in the area. No bullshit, small business, all they do is fix bikes, and they know their poo poo. The guy who owns the place is cool as hell too. The only downside is that they're usually busy as hell so it can take longer to get work done, and they're not a dealer, so parts sometimes take time, and they can't do warranty work. (I wouldn't trust Coleman's with an oil change. Those people are overpriced, act like assholes, and hire incompetent retards.)

Never had my bikes serviced there and probably never would, but one good thing I'll say about Coleman's is they'll match internet pricing on gear. That was the Falls Church location and I can't say whether there are any limitations, but they have a good range of gear so it can be nice to try something on and buy it in person without getting gouged.

A new Cycle Gear store just opened in Springfield, and they've been good. Pretty heavy in store on the in house Bilt and Sedici brands, but they'll order whatever you want, and price match the internet.

I live my RnR and know all the dudes there, they're good people I use them for stuff like tire changes and poo poo but for major services I still go to my dealer. For quick stuff and routine stuff I can def recommend them without hesitation. Also they're all pretty fun dudes. edit: don't go to Stolemans they're the worst, I have Ducati and I drive an hour out to go to Ducpond in Winchester so I don't have to deal with Stolemans

I'd like to work on my bike by myself. In SF, there's a cool workshop where you can rent a spot for a day to do whatever the hell. They've got tools, lifts, experienced people around, all sorts of awesome stuff, and it's like $50 a day. Is there anything like around DC? My new place only has a parking lot, it'd be kind of a pain to strip everything off the bike and do slightly more complicated stuff like carb cleanings and poo poo. Probably get heat stroke too cause there's no shade.

Manassas Honda was a pretty trustworthy shop, but I haven't been there in years. The Yamaha shop in Manassas put new tires on for super cheap, but didn't notice my rear valve stem broke in the process. Fixed it for free without complaint, though. GnarlyCharlie hasn't posted here yet but he works at a bike shop somewhere near Alexandria.

Saw what looked like a bad accident last night near the 395 exit on Mass Ave NW. They blocked off the road for a bit and there were at least 10 police vehicles. People standing around said it was motorcycle vs cabbie
