Sooooooooo... What with the strange Japanese trend of being into Nazi stuff, reading Mein Kampf, and some thinking Hitler really wasn't all that bad with his strong view - does anyone get a creepy vibe from the new opening? The first one had some German in it, but I didn't notice until recently and it wasn't that overt. The new one is a little more war march like. Suddenly it dawned on me that other things could (emphasis for internet conversation) add to this. They are part of an elite corps that are recruited from youth after a long time enemy of humanity who are very human-like but naturally evil start making themselves known again. In the latest court trial, the meddling of the religious and the traders holds back the progress of mankind on eliminating this threat. Our hero is so devoted to his people (I haven't noticed yet, are there any black/non-white characters in AoT?) he is willing to turn into a literal monster, becoming the enemy to destroy them.  Really this probably isn't intended or in any case true, and the German text is just another of the Japanese fads of using other languages because it's cool to do so. Just an off-hand theory that made me laugh.

Japan's ties with Germany pre-date the Axis anyway; when Japan started looking to industrialize and modernize, they studied Germany (or at least the Prussian part) as a model and incorporated a lot of their ideas regarding things like education.

Seeing AoT as a pro-Nazi allegory is silly, yeah. I can kind of see some more generally potentially fascist-ish undertones, but it depends heavily on where the story goes from here. Interestingly, some people interpret Muv-Luv (which I haven't played) in a similar light, and the author of AoT has cited Muv-Luv as an inspiration.

Nope. For the Nazi, anything to do with the Jews would be verboten. Not to mention there are tons of anti-authoritarianism in the subtext, the merchants and priests and military are the bad guys.

He's also been on panels talking about Muv Luv and iirc has outright said that he "plagiarized" a lot of the setting and concepts.

AoT has a fairly strong anti-authority bent to it, at least towards those authority figures who cannot adapt.

Apparently a South Korean magazine called Electronic Times called it militaristic(which I guess makes sense), but they tried to connect it to Japan's prime minister Abe. So I'm not sure if that was a legitimate criticism or them trying to take a stab at Abe. There's also the possibility that the author of the series based commander Dot Pixis on a Japanese Imperial General. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akiyama_Yoshifuru But I'm basing that all on the Wikipedia page, which cites sources but...I can't really verify them because most of them aren't in English.

I'm not sure you can really call it militaristic if the military is shown as largely incompetent, scared to bits at the enemy and pretty much every POV character except Eren always comments about how hosed up war is.

There is a bunch of militaristic fetishism here and there, like the idolising of the recon corps, everyone being in uniform all the time, the buys being saved from the canons by a drat great salute, etc, but it's not to a point that would worry me.

It's kind of hard to take the story's gung ho attitude about the war as being anything too simply dogmatic when you consider that they're fighting zombie ultramen, and have been losing that fight for a hundred years with nothing to show for it. And in spite of the fact that humanity is on the verge of the extinction against these guys, a scenario that just begs for a clean cut worship of warrior ethos, there seems to be shady rear end moral gray areas oozing out of every corner of the story. Japan loves to have it's military fiction cake, eat it, and then talk about how fighting is terrible and how we should all be pacifists no matter HOW badass what we just saw was. Just look at Gundam and Metal Gear.

I think I might actually like Jyuuin no Tsubasa more than Guren no Yumiya. The extended version of JnT is certainly better than GnY's.

Guren no Yumiya wasn't that great to begin with anyway. The whole appeal of the op was the odd synergy that song had with the animation that ended up being silly and amazing at the same time. On its own I never thought the op music was that great.

The second op with its German almost sounds like the national anthems of Canada and Russia had a German child anthem. I like them both, I'll be adding them to my itunes playlist. As for the themes of AoT and whether there's anything Godwin to it I don't think so, the military is way too well organized on one hand, humans tend to be their own worst enemy than the enemy is and there's nothing similar to the gautleiters at all. When I started watching this series I was excited that this could turn into the Game of Thrones of anime, in that everyone is going to die, this is the end, and there is no hope for anyone. As it goes on, I'm still enjoying the show but a little disappointed that it didn't stick to that original course.
