Anyone have any suggestions for taking a poster and making it almost like a giant plaque? Something I could hang like a picture but not have a frame.

I have a couple of Maps I would like to hang up instead of tacking them to a wall. I can't for the life of me think of the wording to describe this service.

You might find a framing shop that could mount the maps on poster board/foam core but the maps will be permanently attached.

That's fine. Poster Board/Foam Core was exactly the terminology I was looking for. Just drew a blank.

Thanks.

Cheap college student technique: get four binder clips, attach two to the top corners and two to the bottom corners, and hang them from nails.

I need a decent soft shell jacket for fall/winter. We don't have real winter here, so it really only needs to be comfortable down to 30 or 40F. Anything colder than that and I can layer. I'm looking for something more outdoors oriented than super fashionable as I've taken up hiking recently. Some rain resistance is good, too.

It's literally called "plaque mounting". You can get plaque or foam core mounting done at probably any framing place but Staples (at least in Canada) also offers these services.

I'd check out Steep and Cheap. It's an outdoors apparel clearance site that tends to have a good selection of brands and sizes. I've hiked with a couple people who really liked their Patagonia jackets, but I haven't owned one myself.

My feeling on softshells is that they shouldn't have hoods and should have elastic cuffs, and of course be wind/water resistant. The no hood thing is easy enough, but everything has velcro cuffs these days. :negative:

I'd personally like a detachable hood, or one that folds up in the collar. I'll probably use this for a daily jacket as well as tromping around in the woods. Currently my jacket options are a nice but beaten up leather coat cut like a peacoat, or my bright yellow cycling rain shell.

I've been digging through steep and cheap to see what's there. The Abisko looks nice, but I don't want a permanent hood.

The right way to SAC is to buy only the current steal, and keep an eye on it. You'll see patterns and some items come up over and over again. If you want to go supershopper you can go to http://www.gearscan.com/ and see what's in the hopper for SAC, Whiskey, and ChainLove. I have probably spent $1,000 on gear and clothing from those sites over the last ten years and they were always at least 50% off.

I don't know if it's the cheapest kettle but I bought this one three years ago and I have no complaints about it. No frills, just put water in it, click the button and the water gets hot fairly quickly. Good size, too.

I have a similar version of that kettle and it's pretty handy, especially with the way it docks on that base.

Anyone know of a good pair of cycling shoes that aren't for clipless pedals? I just need a pair with a stiff sole so they don't bend when I take a long ride.

EDIT: I should say that this is for a road bike and I use toe cages, so something pretty low-profile or light-weight is preferable, but I'm not a gram weenie.

Please post this in the bicycle megathread so everyone can give you a hard time and tell you to just get clipless pedals.

Anybody have a recommendation for ear buds that stay easily and firmly in the ear? I've never been able to wear regular ear buds because they simply fall out of my ears no matter what. I'd rather not take my regular bulky headphones out with me hiking.

Oh, and also looking for a recommendation for a small daybag for hiking to simply hold the essentials. I'm not a fan of lumbar packs. I'm only 5'1" so a lot of packs are simply too big for my stature.

It will work in that it will charge, but the S4 will not charge as quickly as it does with the bundled wall charger due to them using Qualcomm's quick charge spec. It really shouldn't be enough to bother you, however.

I absolutely HATE earbuds for exercise. They're uncomfortable, slip and slide, and then they'll allow sweat to collect and muffle the sound for me.

I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-SHJ07...ds=philips+aero

Which were about 20 bucks new. They're discontinued (and going for over $100 for some ridiculous reason), so you'd have to find something similar, but they're loving great.

I use a small camelbak for day trips. Either something like this or that. They're small, light, and don't get in the way, and also hold water which you have to take anyway. I dislike hauling water bottles around, so it's perfect for me. The second one especially is smaller than it looks; I'd think it'd fit you fine.

I'm at the computer a lot (animator) and goddamn my wrist is starting to hurt. I'm pretty sure it's the start of carpal tunnel or something of course so I'm heading to the doctor. However I'm looking for a way to take the pressure off of my wrist/forearm on the edge of the desk. I'm going to try to get a standing desk, but is there any other device or something that relieves some of the pressure from those acute points?
