--------------------INTRODUCTION--------------------

MGSV GROUND ZEROES / MGSV THE PHANTOM PAIN is a two-part stealth-based action/adventure game for PS3, XBOX 360, PS4, and XBOX ONE. It is directed by game designer Hideo Kojima, developed by Kojima Productions (KojiPro) and produced by Konami. It is the first game by KojiPro to utilize their original "FOX Engine".

The game's lead character is Snake, perhaps best known as Big Boss. MGSV takes place between the events of the games Peace Walker (1974) and Metal Gear (1995). This game (along with Snake Eater, Portable Ops, and Peace Walker) tells the story of Big Boss, who was presented as the villain of the original Metal Gear game, and his rise to power as the leader of the independent nation of warriors called "Outer Heaven" before his defeat at the hands of his clone, Solid Snake.

It is still unclear exactly why the two advertised portions of the game are separated. The prologue (Ground Zeroes) is set in 1975, shortly after Peace Walker. The rest of the game (The Phantom Pain) takes place after Big Boss (now called "Punished Snake") wakes from a nine-year coma with a missing left arm and a "horn" of debris and bone in his forehead. Although they are to be released separately, it is now clear that Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are "both MGSV".

--------------------FIRST IMPRESSIONS--------------------

From "FOX", two phantoms were born. Early looks at the game came from the teaser trailers. "Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes" was publicly announced at PAX Prime 2012 (Penny Arcade Expo) in September of 2012, and a trailer for "The Phantom Pain" was shown during the Spike TV Video Game Awards in December of 2012. The Ground Zeroes trailer sparked debates over Snake's age and hair colour, and speculation about strange light patterns that move across the screen when the gameplay moves from one area to another. When asked at PAX if Ground Zeroes was our first look at MGS5, Kojima and assistant producer Sean Eyestone responded "We're not going to say it's five just yet but we are going to say it's a prologue."

"The Phantom Pain" was allegedly an unrelated game produced by unknown Swedish company Moby Dick Studio and directed by Joakim Mogren. 'Joakim' being an anagram of 'Kojima' and 'Mogren' containing the word 'ogre', a word previously used in reference to a future Kojima project, led fans to examine the trailer in great detail. Very quickly, enough similarities were noticed to conclude that "The Phantom Pain" was related to the Metal Gear Solid series. The Phantom Pain's title screen also had the words "Metal Gear Solid V" hidden in the negative space created by the apparent glitches in the text. The trailer for "The Phantom Pain" showed what looked like Snake with a prosthetic left arm, a person standing amidst flames, a small floating person, and a giant flying whale on fire. There was a flurry of wild speculation during the month of December and then months of practical media silence.

In late March, after some amusing rusing in collaboration with GameTrailers' Geoff Keighley, the official announcement was made at the Game Developers Conference that the two games were one and that the official title was "METAL GEAR SOLID V THE PHANTOM PAIN". On April 1, 2013, David Hayter made an announcement online that he would not be returning as the voice of Snake. (While there is a strong indication that this is legitimate, there still remains the possibility that it is a trick.) At the Konami pre-E3 show in June, the official announcement was made that Hayter would be replaced by Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland, and that the game would carry the themes of RACE and REVENGE.

At E3, the new trailer was launched, revealing the game's theme song "Sins of the Father" sung by Donna Burke, who also provided vocals for Peace Walker's theme "Heavens Divide". The new trailer also showcased many controversial elements, featuring shock torture, waterboarding, explicit gore, and children being used as soldiers. It wasn't until September when Kojima acknowledged that the characters were designed to be more sexy, that many began to voice their concern about the content of the trailer. The choice of wardrobe for the female sniper, Quiet, faced harsh criticism which may very well have been the reason for the closure of the previous MGSV thread.

At the Tokyo Game Show, the gameplay demo of Ground Zeroes (originally created for the opening of KojiPro's L.A. Studio) was unveiled. Spectators of the L.A. Studio demonstration shared their thoughts with games news sites and described the game as being a notable departure from the gameplay of other installments of the series. It included a tagging system, a visual overlay on the screen to represent damage, regenerating health, and a somewhat subdued heads-up-display.

For the launch of Sony's PS4 console Kojima revealed Sony-Exclusive content in Ground Zeroes, available on both PS3 and PS4. The "Deja Vu" Mission shows a re-skin of Snake and other characters, made to look like the low-polygon models of the first Solid game. Snow is falling, and both the DARPA Chief and Psycho Mantis are shown near the end of the trailer.

Also at this time, their updated website was launched and a release date of Spring 2014 was confirmed for Ground Zeroes. No date has been announced for the release of The Phantom Pain.

--------------------CHARACTERS--------------------

Big Boss / Punished Snake (Kiefer Sutherland)
The player character in the prequel games, but first portrayed as the villain in the original Metal Gear. Since being forced to fight his friend and mentor, The Boss, he has struggled to find meaning and purpose in his life as a warrior. He has thrown away any attachment to nations or ideologies, convinced that war itself is his reason to fight. He is passionate, naive, has an unorthodox love for cardboard, and still believes in Santa Claus.

Kazuhira Miller (Robin Atkin Downes)
Snake's partner in crime and subcommander of MSF. Wears very stylish aviator sunglasses. He met Snake two short years before the events of Peace Walker, but they have become close comrades. Together they build MSF from a small mercenary group with a beach-house into a force to be reckoned with on the world's stage. He enjoys curry, music, and long walks on the beach. By the end of the promotional material, he is missing his right arm and left foot.

Skull Face (James Horan)
The commander of the soldiers wearing XOF patches in the GZ trailer and raiding the hospital in TPP. His entire head is covered in what seems to be scarred flesh. He carries a Winchester 1887 (with an antler stock) on his right hip and gives a walkman to Chico in his cell. Could this man without a face be the character in the series famous for having no face?

Huey Emmerich (Christopher Randolph)
Driven by his paraplegia, he is a designer of bipedal robots. He worked with Hot Coldman in Peace Walker under the impression that the project would be a peaceful means of deterrence. He joined Big Boss' MSF after being pushed down the stairs by Coldman. He is romantically infatuated with the AI designer Strangelove and is the father of Otacon. In MGSV, he is shown with a robotic exoskeleton on his legs that allow him to walk. (But not swim.)

Chico Libre (Antony Del Rio)
Child soldier of the Nicaraguan Sandinistas. Joined MSF with his sister, Amanda, after being abducted by the Peace Sentinels and rescued by Snake. He is fascinated by cryptids (UMA's) and admires Snake, who reminds him of Che Guevara. In the Ground Zeroes trailer, he has yet again been abducted and awaits rescue from his cell. We don't know why he plugs headphones into his chest.

Pacifica Ocean (Tara Strong)
A young woman who worked with the entity known as Cipher. Paz was recovered by a Belizean fisherman who found her drifting in the Caribbean after falling from Mother Base in Peace Walker. She is held prisoner with Chico at Camp Omega, an American Black Site in Cuba. Due to her persona in Peace Walker being an act as part of her mission for Cipher, not much is known about her true nature. During her time with MSF, she had a pet cat named "Nuke". She spilled her guts.

Ishmael (Kiefer Sutherland)
A fellow patient shown in the Phantom Pain trailer helping Snake escape the raid of the hospital. His fate is unknown, as he was in the vehicle with Snake during the crash shown in the trailer. His face is almost completely concealed by bandages. The character's voice sounds like Kiefer Sutherland, despite the announcement that he voices Snake. Please take note of his buttocks, visible through the loose hospital gown.

Quiet (Stefanie Joosten)
A sniper who cannot speak. She is shown being subjected to shock torture by Ocelot and a soldier in the E3 trailer. Some skin on her face was shown changing pigment, but no explanation has been provided.

Code Talker (Jay Tavare)
A Navajo code talker, the character said to be over 100 years old.

Eli (...)
A surly looking kid with an outfit somewhat reminiscent of Ocelot's GRU uniform. He is shown with a conch shell on his lap (a reference to Lord of the Flies) The general consensus is that we think he is a young Liquid Snake.

Ocelot (Troy Baker)
Shown helping Snake escape the hospital on horseback, then later escorting him to the beginning of his mission in Afghanistan. He tells a man with one eye to use binoculars.

The Metal Gear series focuses on various characters with the codename 'Snake' who undertake incredible solo sneaking missions, usually to prevent some sort of nuclear catastrophe. The title Metal Gear comes from the name of the giant robots with nuclear launch capabilities who are portrayed in the series as the ultimate threat to the world as we know it. The series carries itself with a strange blend of seriousness and humour. I think the best description I've heard of Metal Gear is that Snake is the ultimate action figure with the best accessories and the game world is the whole playset. (This is slightly rephrased from a post by Wikipedia Brown, whose eye-bulging avatar always makes me very uncomforable.) The games are designed to give the player a variety of options as to how they deal with an obstacle. Furthermore, lethal action is usually entirely optional - 2, 3, POOPS, 4, and PW can be played with no kills.

The series takes place in a world caught in a war between two mysterious groups: The Patriots and Outer Heaven. The player almost always assumes the role of a character who is somehow being manipulated by the prevailing system of control . This was made explicit in MGS2 when, ironically, Raiden was unsure if he was experiencing the real world or a virtual reality. The whole series seems to share the view of Private Joker in Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket". A peace sign button on his body armour and the words "Born To Kill" on his helmet. "I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir."

On that note, Hideo Kojima's Twitter profile says that 70% of his body is made of movies. The same is true of Metal Gear. Not only has the series been criticized for being very cutscene-heavy, but it is also a Lucas/Tarantino-esque montage of many sci-fi and action films. Snake himself is James Bond, John Rambo, Kyle Reese, and Snake Plissken combined into one. The series also emphasizes the idea that history repeats itself. Some characters actually exploit repeating themes within the timeline to shape the outcome of certain events.

There are two main generations in the series: old and new. The new follows the same general path of the old, with the notable change from a supernatural basis to a technological basis. The new generation has many characters who consistently fulfill the roles of their predecessors as the torch is passed from one generation to the next. Each game has a theme that represents both the elements that are inherited from one generation to the next, and also the method the system uses to manipulate the player and the world.

MGS1=GENE, MGS2=MEME, MGS3=SCENE, MGS4=SENSE, MGSPW=PEACE, MGSV=RACE

It is implied that certain concepts are repeated beyond just those two generations as well: Philosophers -> Patriots -> Philanthropy. Each generation has it's major players who hold the world's fate in their hands. The hope of the series is that the newest generation can makes things right.

An example of directly repeating themes:

OLD: Big Boss is memetic son of The Boss.
OLD: Ocelot is genetic son of the Boss but may be unaware of this.
OLD: Gene is designed as perfect successor of the Boss. Frames Big Boss for a hostile takeover.

NEW: Solid is inferior clone of Big Boss.
NEW: Liquid is superior clone of Big Boss but is unaware of this.
NEW: Solidus is designed as perfect clone of Big Boss. Frames Solid for a hostile takeover.

Metal Gear Solid V is in the interesting position of having to bridge the generation gap. We need to say goodbye to the idea of Big Boss as the protagonist and begin seeing him as the villain of Solid Snake's story. We will be doing this with the controller in our hands.

I've never seen anything like that. Even the MGS4 Database was confusing and lacking in many ways, and that was an official source. Plus, any summary would carry some of the author's own interpretation and bias, so you'd have to filter opinion from fact. The best thing to do (and I'm not trying to be rude) is to play the series again.

Agreed. Kojima announced that the next game would have controversial themes when "Kony 2012" was at the forefront of online discussion. I wonder how complicit the player will be in creating more orphans and facing the repercussions. The B&B expositions in MGS4 were horrific, but they were only told via codec. Considering the views Big Boss held in the original game, creating B&B soldiers could be mission objectives this time around. I imagine we'll see some atrocious things in this game.

Also, I will be completely surprised if we don't meet young Drebin.

I see what you did there. Nice job on the OP. Hopefully people can shut the gently caress up about suggestive character design in this thread, as it has been a part of literally every Metal Gear Solid title to precede this one. I'm still holding out hope that what they mean by open world is sort of in the same vein as Peace Walker. Granted, that wasn't necessarily open world like a GTA or what have you, but it wasn't exactly linear, either. I would absolutely love a next-gen version of Peace Walker, complete with control over a virtual army.

Limiting the content creation aspect to touchscreen devices would be a horrible idea, you not only limit yourself to only allowing people with those devices to create content but you'd pretty much also be guaranteed to have a much worse content creation toolset than what would be available on the console version. I think it was just poorly worded and the touchscreen devices are supposed to act as one of those extended display type things, map acting as the map so you can look at that while still moving, while the user created content announcement was supposed to be a "This is also something in the game" statement (maybe you'll be able to use your phone or tablet to browse and download content without going in-game to do so). Or maybe I'm just being optimistic because this has potential to be a really cool feature if it's done right and has an expansive set of tools.

I'm really excited for this game, and I wanted to do a MGS series playthrough, but about two days after I got the HD Collection my PS3 decided it was done reading discs. I don't have the cash to replace it or have it repaired, so I might have to work around it and just skip 4 for now. I even got my hands on Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2 for some sidestory fun.

I agree that playing the games again close together, while not really a short order, is probably the best way to come at the story if you want to get as much of it as possible.

It's been an entire year since we first heard about this game, so I wonder how far off it is from being released? I would guess that like MGS4, it's going to be in the PS4 and Xbox One's second year, although since the last game developed by Kojima was released in 2010 (Rising was developed by Platinum Games), then they've already been working on it for three years. It's also been developed alongside the new FOX engine, so that's going to add a long time to development.

Yeah, especially considering that Kaz, Paz, Chico, and Huey are confirmed to be in TPP. I'm guessing they'll also address the fates of the other main characters. (Amanda, Strangelove, Cecile)

It's also worth mentioning that there appears to be a huge shift in tone between PW and GZ. Peace Walker's theme is PEACE so everything in the game is made to seem light-hearted, when there's actually a lot of betrayal, kidnapping, coercion, NUCLEAR WEAPONS and controversial sexual behaviour. MGSV may have more of its intended effect on you if you've seen the MSF propaganda piece that is Peace Walker.

If you're playing PW HD, I'm sure you can find some comrades in the thread to co-op with. (It makes vehicle battles much more fun.) However, if you're playing on PSP or VITA, it's a really great handheld game because of the mission structure.

Peace Walker takes some getting used to, but when it clicks, it's great. That torture scene is still awful and nearly ruins the game though, and I'm not sure what the character of Cécile added to the story. I'm playing solo and struggling to take down the Mk 2 AI weapons - I need those pieces for ZEKE, creepy singing Boss pod! :argh:

Peace Walker has the best gag of the series - David Hayter shouting "Mr. Kojima?!" is hilarious.

Since Big Boss's coma is when Zero stole the DNA to clone him, I presume Zero will be in the game, probably as the main villain?

Co-ops is great, but after (finally) growing bored with postgame grinding of monsters and mechs, I tried VS OPS. Great fun, especially when the weapons are limited. I recently took part in a 3-on-3 Team Deathmatch that allowed nothing but CQC, Stun Knife, and Placed Weapons. Gray Fox would be proud - a fistfight in a minefield.

It was the coma BEFORE Peace Walker that marked the beginning of the Les Enfants Terrible project. "Cipher" is mentioned in the post-game phone call of PW as being an alias of Zero, so you can count on him being in the game in one way or another.

So many comas...

There is some very sensual touching going on in the cutscene there. i don't actually think it means anything sexual but it's cool how it contrasts with modern ideas of what bad ass stuff should be like. It even seems authentic to some kind of chivalric masculine touching from a tyme longe gone
Peace Walker requires you to roll with some weird poo poo; you have to like the surreal funny side of Metal Gear to enjoy it. Luckily, I do like that.

It has loving grinding in it though. It's not required except for the very end / postgame but that still sucks. Grinding boss fights in an MGS game isn't something I want to do.

So weren't there rumors about this getting a PC release as well?
What's the current situation on that?
Completely off the table, I presume? :(

From what I've heard, there eventually will be a PC version, but not at launch and not for quite a while after launch.

Pet me.
I hope this game will be great, as I like the character Big Boss, and want to see what happens between this and the Original Metal Gear.

Gameplay mechanics wise, MGS always had this rigid way of doing things, either intentionally or by coping with severe limitations of consoles (MGS 4 being the intentional, the latter being every other Metal Gear). With this Fox Engine, I hope we'll be able to control snake like Kojima always wanted to make him to via the cutscenes of the past Metal Gear Solids.

Any Metal Gear Solid knows that there is a lot of Big Boss fellatio going on in cutscenes, but with nothing to prove it because we've never seen him, so we, the player are expected to just accept it and deal with it. Metal Gear Solid V will show why everyone knows his name.

In my eyes, the only major flaw in Peace Walker is that it replaces all the crazy and interesting human bosses of the other MGS games and replaces them with giant robots. It's kind of cool since it's like you're fighting another Metal Gear every 5 missions or so, but I was kind of hoping to fight more men that shoot bees at you.

They brought up the PC version several times to Kojima but recollection tells me he never gave a conclusive answer on it.

I thought the singing anime robots more than made up for their lack of personality by being the only bosses in the entire series that were fun to fight. Which was good because you had to fight them a lot.

Which is dumb considering that the PC version is what was shown off during the MS press conference at E3. They have it, it runs, but someone at Konami still thinks that PCs are just for anime porn games or something.

Once you get accustomed to the patterns, it feels good to thrash giant machines. It's repetitive, but that's also a key concept of the story of the series. There were times that I would remember that the bosses were both the AI and the AI.

It's interesting to consider that each fight feels a lot like REX. It would not bother me at all if mech battles were a big part of the game. The series is called Metal Gear Solid. If Solid's not in it, it had better deliver the Metal Gear. Cocoon would be incredible if it were unleashed on the Afghanistan map.

IIRC, Kojima showed a picture of the Peace Walker and Chrysalis PW models rendered in the FOX engine along with the horse. Now that Snake can jump, hang, and climb better we could have a robotic Shadow of the Colossus.

I'll probably be borrowing my brother's PS3 to play through the Legacy Collection and then get a PS4 (as I would be getting that for other games besides MGSV anyway :v:)
