AlphaDog posted:That suspended sign with lights should be further from the bridge and slightly under the maximum height so it bangs the cab or trailer before the truck ever reaches the bridge. While it wouldn't produce quite as much comedy, it'd be a whole lot safer. "I'm okay - the sign is slightly under the maximum height!" is what 100% of drivers would think before hitting the drat bridge.

The crane on the right is moving the massive crane-looking thing on the left (a dragline excavator) at a coal mine in Queensland. Watch the motor house of the crane on the right when it lets go. My favourite part is the way the boom for the operating crane just dissolves when it goes over vertical; while they are incredibly strong, they are only strong in one direction, and fall apart at the drop of a hat when stressed the wrong way. This is why they don't operate in high winds, and why when they are shut down for the night, they have sensors on them to automatically turn them to present the lowest profile to the wind. The operator of the crane that let go suffered minor injuries; I heard from an industry source that he broke a bone in his wrist gtfo'ing from the cab, and quite frankly I don't blame him at all, even though the safest thing would have been to stay in. Crane operator cabins are rated to survive cave-ins in underground mines, because they are often used on different equipment that goes underground. The dragline boom (big crane-y bit) had to be replaced at a cost of approximately half a million Australian dollars. Video is for the language of the guys who are filming it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrn6ellbtpc Memento has a new favorite as of 01:34 on Oct 21, 2013 |

I like to think he learned a lesson there about being in a profession where you spend you time around huge athletic guys that can kick your rear end at the drop of a hat.
