---------------------------------

Welcome to the Team Fortress 2 thread!

TF2 is a team-oriented, class-based FPS with a strong focus on working together to complete simple territorial objectives. Players pick one of nine classes and work with their team to secure capture points, push giant bomb carts or steal intelligence briefcases from the enemy team. It’s totally free to play forever, no-strings-attached, with every gameplay changing item being easily acquired without you needing to spend a penny. You can download it here.

There is no stat-levelling in TF2 so you can switch freely between the nine classes mid-game, depending on what your team needs and what you enjoy.

The Classes
Scout
+++ Pros: Has the fastest running speed, can double-jump, captures points twice as fast as other classes, deals very high burst damage at close range and can pick and choose his fights better than any other class.
--- Cons: Tied lowest health class and lacks area denial weaponry.
Soldier
+++ Pros: Fires powerful rockets that do lots of damage at close to mid range, has the second-highest max health of all the classes, able to perform rocket jumps to reach high or distant places on-demand.
--- Cons: Has the second-slowest move speed of all the classes and has a relatively small ammo pool.
Pyro
+++ Pros: Has a fair amount of health, does not need to reload his/her primary weapon, can deal lots of damage at close range to multiple enemies, is able to extinguish burning teammates, reflect enemy projectiles and control enemy movement with airblasts.
--- Cons: Limited damage outside of close range.
Demoman
+++ Pros: Has a fair amount of health, can deal absurd amounts of damage with pipe bombs or stickybombs, able to bounce explosives off or over walls and around corners, can plant remote explosive traps that stick to walls and doorframes, able to perform stickybomb jumps to reach high or distant places on-demand.
--- Cons: Limited close-range offensive capability, stickybomb jumps cause a lot of self damage.
Heavy
+++ Pros: Has the most health of any class, deals lots of damage at close and mid range, does not need to reload his primary weapon.
--- Cons: Slow, limited mobility.
Engineer
+++ Pros: Able to build teleporters to move his team to a fight quickly, dispensers to keep them healed and supplied at the front line and sentry guns to keep the enemy out of certain areas.
--- Cons: Needs to maintain buildings or they’ll be destroyed.
Medic
+++ Pros: Heals other teammates, has regenerating health, is the second-fastest of all classes, can deploy “Übercharges” which make their patients and themselves invincible, deal 100% crit damage or heal at a super-fast rate for several seconds.
--- Cons: Limited offensive weaponry.
Sniper
+++ Pros: Can one-hit kill from a distance with a headshot, is able to pick off key players from the enemy line relatively unnoticed.
--- Cons: Limited close range damage options, slow damage output if not consistently hitting headshots.
Spy
+++ Pros: Has a number of gadgets that let him disguise as enemy players, turn invisible for a short time and disable engineer buildings, deals powerful bullet damage with his revolver, can one-hit kill up close with a successful backstab.
--- Cons: Limited offensive capability once discovered behind enemy lines.

If you’re new to the game and you want to learn the ropes, the Soldier is a very forgiving class to learn and try the game out with, and you'll get a good feel for how the flow of combat works. It’s good to play all the classes and learn how they all work so you’re better able to fight against them as whichever class you’d like to play.

The Items
"Which weapons should I use for this class?"
Every class starts with a base loadout filled with stock weapons. As you play, new weapons will drop for you at random intervals. While new weapons translate to upgrades in many multiplayer games, TF2 is balanced so that non-stock weapons are usually sidegrades that open up alternate playstyles or provide a benefit at the cost of a drawback, making them situational upgrades/downgrades. The stock loadouts that you start with are usually the most versatile combinations but experiment with alternatives and you may find a loadout that better suits your playstyle. Like classes, loadouts can be changed in the middle of a game so go hog wild!

If you are unsure as to what a weapon does and want to find out more, check out the Official Team Fortress 2 Wiki. There are thorough explanations and video demonstrations of every weapon being used and how they affect gameplay compared to the stock weapons.

"This item's name is a different color to my stock weapons! What's up with that?"
Items in TF2 have a quality assigned to them that changes the color of their name. They don't make guns more powerful or anything, don't worry, it's cosmetic only. The only qualities that significantly alter items are Strange, which adds a stat counter on that item (usually kills), and Unusual, which adds a fancy particle effect to the item. These items can be very valuable (an unusual hat sold for around $4,000 once!) so you should find out how much they're worth before getting rid of them.

"What about Killstreak weapons? What are they and how can I get one?"
Killstreak weapons display your current kill streak with that weapon in the kill feed and also announce when you hit certain milestones (5 kills, 10 kills, etc). They are created by applying a specific weapon's Killstreak Kit to that weapon (any item quality) and can be identified by "Killstreaks Active" appearing in the item stats. Killstreak Kit Fabricators can then be used to create Killstreak weapons that have a colorful, glowy sheen in addition to the counting your kills. They come in two flavours, Specialised and Professional. The former simply adds the sheen to your weapon while the latter also adds a particle effect to your class, such as burning eyes, as you rack up the kills.

If you want to create a Specialised or Professional Killstreak weapon, they require a random Unique Killstreak weapon as part of their recipe, so make sure to use the plain Killstreak Kit on a standard, non-strange weapon. Also keep in mind that some of these weapons, the Professional ones particularly, can be very rare so just like unusuals, find out their value before flogging them on the market for cheap!

The Servers
"Every server I join has a bunch of bots/terrible donator privileges/pop-up ads! Help!"
There are a lot of terrible TF2 servers out there that have been set up solely to earn money, either through ad revenue or offering crazy game breaking perks to anyone willing to drop :10bux:. You can try using this to blacklist the known bad servers but be aware that this simply blocks the server IPs so you'll need to update your blacklist regularly to keep servers that rotate IP addresses often blocked.

Here's a list of goon recommended servers that you can join (click the IPs!) and favourite if you don't want to deal with any of that bullshit. If you have any recommendations to add to the list, post in the thread and they'll get added below.

North American servers:

quote:

Lost Continents - Rutas - 74.91.113.203:27015 - The oldest remaining goon server. Nocrits, mostly stock 5cp maps, ability to kick-a-pubby if the server is full and you want in. Check out the thread for more information.

Teufort Teuquick | Blueberry Bonanza - 66.150.214.102:27015 - A goon-run 32 slot server that hosts everything from regular gamemodes to prophunt, deathrun, pyro dodgeball and more!

The Shoebox - 64.31.15.98:27035 - The Shoebox has been described by visitors as “semi-competitive.” Many of our regulars have some low-level competitive experience, there’s occasionally a few plat players here and there, and our map cycle has a good deal of competitive mainstays and comp-friendly crowdpleasers. But we try to keep things friendly, alltalk is always on, and we’re all in it to have fun.

FITH - 216.52.148.223:27015 - Nocrits, votation. Map list is stock plus UGC plus a modest selection of other custom maps (including Pro maps). Generally start. ~8pm EST. Runs in-house HL pugs.

(-TN-) - 68.68.32.218:27015 - Crits, rotation, all custom including a few Pro versions of stock maps. Always up, but donators ($5/mo) kick non-donators if the server is full, which makes it difficult to get/stay on as free especially at peak times. Most of the donators are a pretty tough crowd so I think of it as paying for practice. They also have a set of 24/7 ($MAP) servers and some others that tend to be less full.

Cool Table - 216.52.148.232 - Vanilla 24 man server, Chicago. Still new and pretty sparsely populated but the admins try and get their friends on a couple nights a week to get games going. Not a very high level of play but the regulars generally go for the objective when it's not deserted. Alltalk, RTV, nominate, votescramble, crits and spread on. About a dozen stock maps on rotation, most gamemodes are represented. By default the server picks three maps from the rotation, and players vote. No bots, no ads.

Cafe of Broken Dreams - cafeofbrokendreams.com:27015 - Similar settings to the above, but based in Texas and with pregame mayhem (friendly fire on) enabled while waiting for players. Replays on. Not too active now, but used to have a lot of good players who still come around from time to time. I think they used to field a Highlander team.

The Crit Sandvich Chicago Slaybox - 66.221.253.114 - is pretty good too, it's my go-to when the above aren't populated (which is most of the time)

Taunt Gamers - generally pretty laid back with a good range of experience. No ads, you can donate $2/mo for stuff like end of round and autobalance immunity. Some quake soundpack is enabled by default but you can thankfully turn it off:

50.31.21.203:27015 - Badwater/Goldrush
50.31.21.203:27014 - 2fort
50.31.21.203:27016 - Dustbowl
50.31.21.203:27013 - Pipeline
50.31.21.203:27012 - 'Fuckaround maps'

STARZ - 70.42.74.33:27015 - no crit/spread, normal + actually fun custom maps, plus you can both nominate & rtv. East coast but v stable ping for west coast scrubs, good players, pretty much full all hours of the day.

GameME's Arena Server - 72.5.195.40:27015 - pretty much the only consistently populated Arena server I've found without any bullshit. Full teams, only the odd man out sits out, scrambles after 3. Sometimes has shitheads on it who get mad when you cap, but generally fun.

Nemu's Proving Ground Payload Maps - 67.213.222.178:27015 - all official Payload maps. Almost always full at any hour of the day, no ads and the very fun Grooveshark/Magicsong server mod. Doesn't have any team scramble options, which makes it highly prone to stacks at times, but otherwise a great server I regular a lot. Should note that there's a single bot, Brutus, who is something of a server mascot, but he sits out when the server's full, I think.

The Furry Pound #4 - 208.115.128.10:27015 - Vanilla settings across the board, default respawn time, crits, no alltalk etc. Literally always full, literally. Pretty good player base skill-wise. Recommended to have sprays turned off!

10 man 30 wave MvM - 98.228.237.40:28020 - Start with free money. Interesting bots and waves. Also has !resize and !robot. Sometimes a little laggy but not usually. Pro fun haver server.

Gibbed Gaming, A/D Push Maps - ad.gibbedgaming.com:27015 - No advertisements, the only gameplay donator perk is auto-balance immunity, and the players and community are pretty good too I think. Fills up most evenings and sometimes during the day too. Mostly Attack/Defend and Payload maps, including the bad ones like Dustbowl and Hoodoo, but there's plenty of Badwater, Upward, and Gullywash. The voting system is a little weird but you can disable it easily if it gets too annoying.

Duck Soup Gaming - 66.150.164.129:27015 - Runs nocrits and forces random team selection.

UK/European servers:

quote:

Hampshire Heavies - Pretty decent UK-based servers and they have some very good players if you fancy a challenge.

Don Pascualino's - fps10.mtxserv.fr:27030 - If you're French/European and looking for a nice server with no random crits, no ads, and sometimes really good players, give it a try.

whatthefrag.net:

Idle - 82.201.96.103:27030 - an idle server, if you want to idle for some reason

UKCS servers - the Vanilla servers are the best (Vanilla meaning standard respawn and map rotations), also last spot on the server is always reserved for donators;

UKCS:TF2#1 - Mega Game Server - 78.129.244.230:27015 (Note: Instant Respawn)
UKCS:TF2#2 - Mega Game Server - 78.129.244.230:27030 (Note: Instant Respawn)

UKCS:TF2#8 - Payload Extreme! - 78.129.244.236:27030

Asia & Oceania servers:

quote:

Orange Server 00 - 157.7.138.97:27016 - Stock server, no spread, random crits, 24 player limit. The players are really nice and pretty good. No class limits, but you'll rarely see more than one heavy or spy or two engies/snipers. Fills up most evenings and weekends.

Orange Server 03 - 157.7.138.97:27015 - Same as the above, but has something called the "RMF Ability Pack" installed which gives the classes some new tricks, but nothing terribly crazy. Skill average is fairly low

PuniPuni na Are Server 1 - 202.213.210.22:27015 - Mix of stock and custom maps with votemap. 28 player limit, so it's more about fun-having but not as chaotic as a 32-player server. Almost always occupied.

PuniPuni na Are Server 2 - 202.213.210.22:27016 - Same as the above, but no custom maps.

No Kids Here! #3 - Playload - 119.252.191.56:27055 - Decent Australian payload server.

Payload Inc. #1 - 125.63.48.140:27015 - Same as previous.

Orcon Games | TF2 #2 | Payload - 219.88.241.90:27200 - Decent New Zealand payload server.

FAQ, Hints and Tips
Some of these hints and tips refer to the developer console and the autoexec.cfg file.
How to enable the console.
Blank autoexec.cfg, save this in Steam/steamapps/<your name>/Team Fortress 2/cfg if you do not have an autoexec file already.

Important: Open the console and make sure that your fov_desired is set to 90. Lower FOV puts you at a straight-up disadvantage in-game as you won't be able to see as much at any one time as other players.

"I'm having a hard time telling if I'm hurting people or not. Is there any kind of feedback when I shoot someone?"
Go to Options > Multiplayer > Advanced and turn on hitsounds and damage indicators, and you'll be able to tell what's hitting AND how much damage it's doing!

"I keep trying to shoot people and I miss most of my shots. Is there anything I can do to aim better?"
Be patient! Don't hold your fire button down and hope your shots hit, take the extra half-second to line up your crosshairs and THEN click to fire. This seems like a no-brainer but it's a really common point most people don't consider, so it's worth saying. That extra half-second can feel like an eternity, but take it and line up your shots and your accuracy will greatly improve.

"I shot someone with a hitscan weapon and they didn't take any damage! Is the game broken or something?"
The default network settings can be a bit off, particularly for hitscan weapons. Check out the "Network Settings" commands later on in this post for a way to help with that.

"My gun takes up too much of the screen, especially while I'm reloading. How can I fix this?"
Try changing your viewmodel_fov. Setting it to 0 or 180 will make your viewmodel disappear if you want rid of it completely. If you just want a smaller viewmodel, set it to a value between 54 (the default) and 180. I'd recommend putting your desired viewmodel_fov in your autoexec as it can get reset to default if applied via console.

"What mouse sensitivity should I use to be good at this video game?"
There is no correct answer to this question as it really comes down to personal preference and what you're used to. People that mainly play classes like scout and sniper often prefer a low sensitivity that allows them to aim more precisely whereas people that mainly play classes like soldier often use higher sensitivities to make rocket jumping and quickly reacting to things easier. That said, whatever sensitivity you use, it's usually a good idea to be able to spin at least 180° in-game without needing to pick up your mouse.

"My TF2 class looks really cool, you guys! Here's a screenshot fresh from my loadout screen!"
That's fantastic but why not take a screenshot of your dressed up mercenary in-game instead? Reiley made a pretty comprehensive guide on how you can use replays to create beautiful screenshots that you can show all your friends and fellow posters. Consider giving it a try next time you want to share a picture!

Additional useful commands can be found in the "Useful Config Commands" section below!

Items and Trading
Goon trading thread - All posts about trading things should go here.
TF2Outpost - The biggest trading site at the moment. Be wary for people trying to scam you by offering super low prices on your items as this is prevalent here.
Bazaar.tf - Similar to TF2Outpost but with a smaller user base.
TF2TP - An item trading site run by Luigi Thirty. Not as popular in the trading scene as the above two sites any more and lacking in a few features but may be updated in the future.
Dispenser.tf - A trading site that uses bots so that trades can take place even while one user is offline.
Scrap.tf - 1:1 trading with bots. If you're missing a weapon or hat and have a spare, this site makes it really easy to fill the holes in your collection. Now includes 1:1 MvM robot part trading and trading strange items.
Scrapbank.me - Same concept as Scrap.tf but not as popular. Definitely worth a look if Scrap.tf's wait times are high.
Backpack.tf - Lets you find out the value of TF2 items. Take all prices (especially for unusuals) with a grain of salt as they are community submitted and approved.
Missing.tf - A site that lets you find out which TF2 items you do not own, made by Otacon.
TF2Tags - A useful item nametag preview and voting site by Dr. Dos.
SourceOP - A forum for high end TF2 trading and real money purchases.
SteamRep - A trade scammer database.
If you plan to trade in unusuals and/or real money, PLEASE ASK FOR ADVICE HERE OR IN THE TRADING THREAD, people will try to scam you out of your hats/$$$.

Custom HUDs
While the default HUD is more than serviceable, lots of custom HUDs are available if you would prefer to use them.

TFTV Master List - A collection of HUDs that are currently updated. Also includes HUD editing guides if you want to make edits yourself.
FrankenHUD - Kicks loving rear end and is regularly updated by a regular in this thread (The Kins)!! Support local business.
yA_HUD
Garm3nHUD
PVHUD
broeselhud
ompHUD
TF2Hud+

Demo Recorders
The in-game demo feature allows you to save a replay of your POV from a match. This is like an ordinary replay but first person only and it lasts until a stop command is sent, instead of being only one life.

P-Rec - Automatic demo recorder.
How to set up P-Rec as an alternative to replays in any server.

Useful Config Commands

Class config files; scout.cfg, soldier.cfg, etc; are already present in the cfg folder when you install the game. Any configs added to one of these files will load and apply only when you select that class, and any changes you make to one class will not be reverted when you switch out of that class unless every other class has a corresponding config. Example: if you put "cl_autoreload 0" in spy.cfg, load your game and pick Scout, your weapons will autoreload until you pick Spy, but if you don't put "cl_autoreload 1" in every other class config file when you switch out of Spy you won't auto reload anymore with any other class.

Chris's Max FPS Configs are popular performance-enhancing configs if you're using an old computer or want to maximize your Frames Per Second. Comes in a variety of flavors.

Note: If you're using Chris' Max FPS config and you experience graphic glitches where you have to enter the item menu twice before being able to use it and %NEMESIS% shows up in killcams, make sure and comment out this line in the config to
code:
mat_antialias 1
Doing that should remove those two issues that people commonly have with the maxfps config.

TF2mate config file generator - http://clugu.com/tf2mate/

Help fine-tune your mouse sensitivity - http://www.funender.com/quake/mouse/index.html#settings

TF2 Anti-Virus - https://github.com/CasualX/SourceProtect/blob/master/protect.cfg - Adblock and more.

tf_dingaling_pitchmaxdmg 5
tf_dingaling_pitchmindmg 150 - Add these to adjust the pitch of your in-game hit ding by how much damage you did.

cl_autoreload 0/1 - Toggles autoreloading on and off

bindtoggle [YOUR KEY HERE] "r_drawviewmodel" - Toggles viewmodels on and off when you press a key

viewmodel_fov XX - Adjusts the field of view of your viewmodels. Default is 54. Higher numbers pull them out more, lower numbers pull them in.

zoom_sensitivity_ratio .X - controls your mouse sensitivity when scoped in as a Sniper. Default is 1, can be set to decimals like .9

Engineer Fast-Building Scripts - You can pick one, two or all of them.
code:
bind [YOUR KEY HERE] "destroy 2; build 2" // Sentry

The Shitterbinds
Okay listen up for a second: the automated, randomized text bind is an ancient and noble tradition in the world of Team Fortress gaming and entertainment. However, like all good things, it is abused and ruined by people who have less sense than creativity. Below, for sake of posterity, you'll find the binds in question. You can either paste this into autoexec.cfg or create a new text file, name it as "XXXXX.cfg" and then put "exec XXXXX" into your autoexec file instead.

Please make your binds clever and inspirational.

TF2maps has a lot of good resources even if it is pretty dead by now. Here's an outdated, but still very helpful, premade gallery of skybox/lighting effects so you can just dump them into your map and get the same lighting as on official maps. This is a list of decompiled Valve maps to poke around in, but do keep in mind that decompiling causes several optimization objects and other level elements to be removed, meaning recompiling one of these isn't going to turn out very well. Also, if you DO end up just making koth_watchtower or koth_offblast or something, DON'T POST ABOUT IT ON TF2MAPS. They hate revised maps.

Most importantly, :siren:you seriously should not bother with TF2 mapping without the Ultimate Resource Pack,:siren: which saves you a lot of headaches and confusion with Hammer.

TF2maps recently added a "map graveyard" where they toss their old map files up for download that they don't plan on finishing, for others to pick up and use. The quality and completion level of these can vary wildly, but I recommend poking through some of those too because looking at decompiled Valve maps can be very, very intimidating. It'll give you a good idea of what a map should look like early on.

Lastly, and probably the thing I should've linked first, this guide from Valve's developer wiki on mapping. It's from the game's launch in 2007, and thus it's fairly dated, but it's what I used to learn how to do maps and you may or may not find it easier to digest than some of the guides on TF2maps. If you have any questions, you can ask on the TF2maps forums, and while I might not be able to field mapping questions very well I'd be happy to try (and I'm sure a bunch of other guys around here would be, too).

Network Graphs - What they are and how to use them.

Hats Wouldnt Fly posted:

This is a network graph:

Specifically, this is net_graph 4. It provides a lot of information, and using it you can quickly determine whether your problems are on your end or the server's.

FPS and ping are self explanatory. The in and out numbers are just bandwidth usage and safely ignored.

In the upper graph itself, the spikes are communication between yourself and the server. Of particular note, the lower bits of green are other players, and the red is hats. None of this matters. What's important is the gaps in it. The even spaces near the left side are choke. For whatever reason I do not have enough frames to display all of the incoming data. Farther to the right, the large uneven gaps are packet loss. These occur because I live in the middle of nowhere.

My lerp is orange. This can be bad. Orange lerp means if I lose packets or have a framerate dip my game will stutter. The blue and red bars at the very bottom edge show how smoothly the game is running. Blue going down is good. Orange going up means my client is lacking sufficient information and just guessing where everything is. You can see these coinciding with packet loss and choke. These moments of gameplay were a stutterly, laggy mess.

If your game is running badly and you notice a lot of packet loss, something is probably wrong with your internet. Make sure there aren't any torrents running on your network or whatever. If you only notice it on one server, though, it may be on their end. If nothing else is using your bandwidth and it happens on multiple servers a call to your ISP may be in order. If you have a lot of choke, your net settings probably need adjusting. Keep in mind bursts of choke are normal at the beginning of new rounds.

Now, if this is all in order, you should check the SV at the very bottom. This is the framerate of the server you are currently on. If you see this changing a lot, or dipping into low numbers, leave.

There are also four numbers to the right. The top and bottom (both 67/s) are my requested cmdrate and updaterate. The numbers between them are what I'm actually getting. If these numbers are not very close together, something is wrong. Usually, that something is the server you're playing on having a lovely internet connection. Find a new one.

If you're not sure if there's an item you're missing, or want to make sure you collected all of the 29 million weapons and hats and miscs that this game has, feel free to check out my old never-gonna-be-updated site https://www.missing.tf - simply enter your Steam Username (or Profile address, or SteamID) and press Enter - everything that appears is an item you DO NOT HAVE, which makes finishing grabbing up those last few missing weapons or hats that much easier. If the background of the item isn't Yellow then there is either a strange, vintage, or genuine of that item as well.

Once you've figured out which items or weapons or hats you'll be wanting, check out https://www.scrap.tf - their bots will give you 2 weapons for each scrap metal you give them, the same as crafting your own scraps!

Welcome to the Exciting World of TF2! The Horde of Snipers is hard to defeat unless you do actively point out that it might help if one or two of them switches classes. Or you pick Pyro and stand in front of them while spraying your flamethrower constantly.

Switch teams and murder them all. Or tell the other team about them and beg them to do the job for you. It won't be that hard, the kind of snipers that hang out in trios tend to be poor snipers.

There's a couple of tactics that work, and depending on your skill level, you're free to try and experiment with some or all of them:

- Pick the Pyro, then shoot your flamethrower in front of the sniper. This will block his scope and get mad at you. You may or may not get vote-kicked from a server for doing this!

- Switch teams and pick Demoman, using the Sticky Jumper and Ullapool Caber. Sticky jump towards snipers just outside of their line-of-sight, tag them with the Caber. If you survive, sticky jump back to spawn. Rinse and repeat.

- Switch teams and pick Spy, using the Cloak and Dagger. Stealth your way to the Snipers, disguise yourself as the Scout, then hit the "NICE SHOT!" keybind every time one of them makes a shot. Remain cloaked while you are doing this!

I do this on 2fort, but with the pan. Stupid snipers don't even turn around after the first hit, my person best is 4 pan kills in a row, taunting after each kill.

Another great way to annoy snipers is to go heavy, step in their line of sight and spam "Thank you" at them until they snap.

It was October 27th in 2010 and 2011, and October 26th in 2012. Major updates are usually on Thursdays though, so that Valve has a day before the weekend where they can fix any bugs that have been introduced. While the 24th would be the earliest one yet, the Thursday after that is the 31st so unless they play it really late and the update is on Monday, tomorrow or Friday seem likely.

Bi-monthly, as we have now ascertained, once every two months. So we're expecting a new comic in the coming weeks, although there's no reason to think it will be a Halloween comic (no reason to think otherwise, but that's Valve Time for you).

To any new players that might be reading this as it's early in the thread: if you want to win, play Medic (you want to win). If there's a Medic, play Demoman. If you're struggling with Demoman, use the stickylauncher exclusively since you can land ridiculous kills with it without needing much twitch skills (it gets better the worse the players you're facing are, exploit this), and as you do so, practice landing grenades, it's not as hard as it seems.

Then, and only then, can you evolve into other classes. Trust me on this.

Someone in the last month or so mentioned this excellent thing to do when there are too many of one class on your team: give them a job. Say, "hey, would one of you snipers take out the sentry/heavy?", and there's a good chance that one of them will switch classes. It's psychology, or something. And if you're lucky, one of the remaining snipers will even achieve the task you mentioned!

To echo this, playing Medic in a normal pub game can easily turn the tide of battle, not just because you provide healing but because you can indirectly control the team. It might take them a few deaths, but eventually people will start hanging around you and sticking close so you get to choose the attack routes.

Playing Engie can have the same effect, teleporters will directly put people where you want and they'll run back to your sentry-protected dispenser safe haven, especially on A/D maps.

Speaking as someone who plays only Medic: Ahahahahahaha oh man I wish. Healing is literally all you can do on pubs, if you get anyone who knows what to do with an uber you're pretty fuckin' lucky and if you get someone who knows what to do with a kritz you might have ended up in a tournament by mistake. Quickfix 4 lyfe.

Today I learned a lesson: Never go on FAMOUS TF2 PERSONALITY servers. Jerma's east coast server had <100 latency and was on badlands so I figured I'd check it out. Thus began a couple of hours of frantically trying to heal everyone on my own while tryhards tried that thing they saw in that one video I swear star did it. I'm not sure who was my favourite, the soldier who kept overshooting his market gardens by miles, the pyro named "Forward" who was doing that lovely gimmick because STAR_ did it, or maybe the TWO pyros who forgot they had a mouse1. Seriously, at one point a pyro walked up to me, puffed me once, airblasted me straight into the wall about three times and totally flubbed his swing, so I got away and mocked him. If he'd just been holding down mouse1 he'd have killed me! Then it turned into barnblitz pro, one guy went "I know we have enough snipers but I'm playing it anyway", then the entire BLU team went SMG/jarate sniper teamup. That was quite fun. I was on RED.

Medic will teach you the two most important skills that you'll ever need to be a good TF2 player: remain alive, and you win if your team defends the medic (or you can defend yourself, by keeping yourself alive, see point one). That's it. Point your medigun at people with little crosses over their heads and follow these two simple rules (or, in the case of the second, realize how loving massive of a difference it makes when morons ignore these simple rules) and you'll very quickly learn the fundamental game constant: games are won and lost on uber pushes, and learning how to keep the uber builder alive and get him to a position where he can exploit ubers effectively and you will win literally every game. This is true from the lowliest Valve server to the finals of UGC Highlander or i49 or whatever. It's what the game is quite literally built around.

Demoman will teach you the third most important skill in the game: namely, the best tool you will ever have is predicting where an enemy will be, and making sure lots of damage is applied there. The Stickylauncher is this lesson personified; if you can predict where someone is chasing you, which you'll learn quite quickly by dying a bunch: mine that spot you'll suddenly find yourself shooting up the scoreboard. It will also teach you a bunch of other minor but utterly critical lessons; landing pipes will teach you to land anything else in the game, positioning, baiting, retreating, knocking out the Medic, explosive jumping and airstrafing. You'll also learn a million little things that will make you a better player quite quickly but aren't quite as easy to put into words, where healthpacks are, where players are likely to be, the shortest path to the nearest healthpack (and the quickest way to make that path lethal), how quick other classes move, how other classes approach and how to exploit the weaknesses of each class.

Engineer can teach you to put up teleporters (your primary role! Just do it!), dispensers for players running back from the front and sentries to protect your teleporters and to a lesser extent your dispenser, but a lot of players tend to see the sentry as your primary role. It's not. It's far from terrible, but if you want to area deny, play Demo. If you want to get that Demo to the front to area deny, then support him from flanking and bombing classes, as well as protecting your nest, play Engineer. But frankly I would learn, like, five classes first.

Let's get some loadout pics in the new thread! I like to put different cosmetic setups in each slot, so it's easier to tell what I'm using at any given time.

Slot A is nice and simple, my first Medic loadout. Just some doctorin' equipment, y'know? Setup's about as basic as it gets.

Slot B, I like to call my 'tryhard' setup, it's got the OPTIMAL CHOICES for primary and melee and the kritz because I put the kritz in slot B, that's just how it goes. I personally think Vita-saw combos really well with Kritzkrieg, since unlike with the other mediguns popping it doesn't prevent dropping it you might as well save some of it. I got the idea for the look when I noticed that the mask and Pyrovision goggles together cover the Medic's entire face, then it was just a matter of finding a hat to complete the look. I'm pleased with the result, it's like the Pyro decided to go into medicine.

But Slot C is the loadout I use most often (see above re: pubbies and ubers and god dammit YOU ARE INVINCIBLE JUST GO FORWARDS). Just got and painted the beard today, before that I had the heart monitor thing because it looked all sciencey. I'm considering renaming my Quick-Fix, "Ze Luftwaffe" seemed appropriate because it turns you into a flying German but recently I started thinking "Ze Air Ambulance" might work better, and look less like I was just making a crass Nazi reference.

Slot D just has whatever in it, I don't even remember. I think it's my MvM setup like all my other slot Ds. I do have a Vintage Blutsauger, earned in the glory days of 08 just like the Kritz and Ubersaw. It sees no love.

Add this to the server list!

The Furry Pound #4: 208.115.128.10:27015
Vanilla settings across the board, default respawn time, crits, no alltalk etc. Literally always full, literally. Pretty good player base skill-wise.

Sorry I meant to say I hope that the police use maximum force and kill or maim a bunch of innocent people, thus paving a way for a proletarian uprising and socialist utopia

Come on Ilhan, lets go bag us a shitpost

Reposting links from the old thread: If you want to try some of gimmick game modes, http://www.saxtonhell.com/ runs a bunch and isn't annoying. http://tf2randomizer.com/ is also good place for randomizer (random class/random loadout).
