This is Khan. She also enjoys poison dart frogs. She knows precisely how cute she is. This is Colonel Tigh. He is one charming little dude. This is my mom's doxen, Pepper. I didn't know a living being could be so happy. And she is like this all the time.

HelloIAmYourHeart posted:Are you not familiar with poison dart frogs? They come in all different bright colors.. These ones are safe at the Des Moines Zoo and can live up to 10 years in captivity. They had some blue ones, too. More cute zoo stuff- if you visit the National Zoo on a slow day the lemurs out back of the small animal house will come over and hold your hand, the giant blue pigeon relatives (these guys- had to look it up) will be marauding through the indoor trails (slightly dangerous), cassowaries will straight up stalk you , the zookeepers/volunteers are bored and want to chat. Nice days in the off season at later hours are great for that sort of thing- the cautious animals are out and the curious animals are extra curious.

HelloIAmYourHeart posted:Do you have pet poison dart frogs??? Poison dart frogs don't produce their own toxins. They're simply immune to the environmental toxins in their normal, tropical environment, which they consume as part of their jungle diet and then store / concentrate. When you remove a poison dart frog from its natural environment and feed it Purina frog chow or whatever, they're actually non-toxic.

HelloIAmYourHeart posted:Do you have pet poison dart frogs??? Used to. When my boyfriend at the time and I broke up, we decided it was best if I took the cats and he took the frogs. They sound a little like a cross between a finch and a cricket! Marathanes posted:Poison dart frogs don't produce their own toxins. The azorius here is completely non-toxic, but a few such as the Golden dart frog can still get you pretty sick even on an all-fruit-fly diet. Even knowing that it is hard to call the little guys by their scientific name, terribilis. I wish I had video of them eating. Their aim is awful and they bonk each other all the time.

These guys live in my valley and come out when it rains. The first time I saw them at my house, I called the Dept. of Agriculture and they told me not to worry because our local ecosystem doesn't support their toxin production. It's still weird to open your front door and see these guys!
