Ape Agitator posted:

Those are all really reasonable issues. Think I'll pass on this one.

I disagree with most of his points.

I found the platforming fine. I guess I didn't really have a problem with LBP either, but there I at least knew what people were talking about when they complained about the controls. Here, I just never really ever had any problems controlling anyone.

The complaint about the QTEs is odd to me. Not only are they not very long, but they are really forgiving and don't come up until you activate them. If you do manage to screw one up, you go back a little, but it's really never that fun.

I also did find the game to be alot of fun. Yes the head thing isn't used very well (though there are a few moments that can really shake things up) and yes there's alot of story but the story that's there is really god damned good and whimsical and I couldn't help but have a great time playing it from beginning to end. $7 is a god damned steal.

Notes:

No free things for everyone this week.
Out of nowhere, an add-on pack for DUST 514 is free for PS+ members for 2 weeks. I think this is a consumable pack, so PS+ members will only get 1 pack for free.

Yeah, it's just Assassin's Creed Liberation HD for this week's new release.

LittleBigPlanet games: New Year Firework Costume is in the store, but they are unavailable due to a recursive condition: "Not available for purchase: you do not own New Year Firework Costume" :cripes: Here are the links to them in case they fix it after tomorrow (Update: They are all now available)
LBP2 version | LBP Karting version | LBP Vita version

Demo of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will come out next week.

Add-on for Muramasa Rebirth will also come out next week.

The blog staff once again confirmed that February's PS+ lineup will be revealed/confirmed next week.

cross save in thomas was alone doesn't want to work. It looks like the same system as stealth inc (just a cloud sync button on the main menu) which is working so I'm not sure what's up. I hit cloud sync on the vita where my progress is, it says synced. then I do it on ps3, it says synced but progress isn't transferred. tried it a couple times.

Hmm being in the EU and having just got a pre-owned Vita this is annoying

PSP Game:
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker $19.99 $9.99 ✚$6.99 (playable on Vita)

As it is still £14.99 ($25) on the UK store. I assume without having a PSP there is no way for me to buy a cheep psp version of this from say ebay and then get it added to my psn account.

I also assume I can't do the multiple accounts trick I do on the ps4 to buy if from the US store.

In which sense?

If you've got a US account already and a way to shove money into it you can BUY it just fine. It's just that the Vita is natively a single-account device - and juggling accounts involves several minutes of time and annoyance (un-skipable first run crap) even if you have a second card to switch off - and from other people's experience that's worse than it sounds.

And Peace Walker seriously benefits from the second analog stick.

Problems with Puppeteer:

  • The floatiness. Oh God, the floatiness.
  • The central gimmick (the interchangeable heads) is almost never used and when it is used, it's nothing spectacular. The only differences between heads (and there are one hundred of them) are that certain ones can unlock a few extra "sparkles" (think coins from Super Mario Brothers) in a few areas and every once in awhile if you somehow managed to get the correct one (they're given to you mostly at random) right before a boss, you might get to use it to skip a tiny part of the boss fight. It's really, really weak.
  • At no point is the gameplay all that fun.
  • The bosses all have long QTE sequences that aren't all that hard but if you slip and screw one up, you will be replaying a large part of the boss fight.
  • The cutscenes are longer than the actual gameplay. I mean, they're well-done cutscenes and all but if you're making a game and each ten-minute level is bookended by fifteen minutes of cutscenes, you should probably fix your priorities. It's OK with Metal Gear Solid but with a platformer you kinda just want to get on with the game. One goon said it best when he said that it seemed like what the developers really wanted to be doing was make an animated movie but then someone came and forced them to turn it into a game.

There was so much promise with the game's premise but that it was executed so poorly just made me sad. :(

I second this review. I'd add that much of the game consists of tapping the square button which is the opposite of fun. I wish I could have my $7 back.

Sounds like a faff but doable then, shame vita is a single account device. Still thank you for the info that it can be done.

May put up with the faff to grab it cheep, thank you.

looked around a bit and the comments at the bottom of this page onto p. 2 seem to indicate I'm not alone with this at least.http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/04/23/thomas-was-alone-out-today-on-ps3-ps-vita-with-dlc/#comments

No fixes are presenting themselves though. Some people say selecting the level rather than hitting resume will work but the level select isn't syncing for me either.

In my opinion, it's the best game on the vita. It just got DLC out in the US or coming next week if your in Europe. The visuals are great, the controls are good. Things can get a little busy on the screen when 9+ enemies are present, but there really isn't any slowdown. Definitely a good purchase.

The way you phrase it sounds like you played the Wii version. If so, just take solace in the fact this game actually has an assigned jump button.

That's correct! But I was also a little vary of the Vita's controls, especially when it's such a fast-paced game. A jump button sounds pretty sweet, though. I've heard the translation has been changed. Is it any good? Any other changes? I haven't actually beaten the Wii version.

It controls just fine, and you can customize them however you want (I like the d-pad for movement and left analogue for items). The translation is indeed different and much better.

I was mooching off my brothers for quite a while and I know he shared it with several other people. The drawbacks to that are I think if more than 2 people are accessing it, the third is poo poo out of luck and it won't let them watch it. Also I had several instances where it would make me re-enter the code and I would have to call my brother and have him reactivate my device. This is a small price to pay though for basically unlimited HBO access. Also the shows go up the second they air and in some cases they put the following weeks episode up early only if you have GO.

I don't know what else to tell you. I really liked it and it was one of my favorite games of last year and all the hate it's getting seems outright bizarre to me. I guess it's just gonna be one of those games like Heavenly Sword where I see something truly great and doesn't seem to be there for most other people.

Speaking of games, I got DmC since it's free now.

...I'm actually really enjoying it. I'd gone through all of the previous DmC games--well the main HD trilogy--a few months ago so I definitely feel an old hand at the franchise now, so I started up on hard mode. I can't speak for the other difficulties, but the game isn't nearly as difficult or complicated as DMC3, but it's still a Devil May Cry game--it punishes you for not dodging and for getting greedy with attacks and the big Tyrant enemies are a consistent challenge whenever I run into 'em. There's plenty of weapons to experiment with and the move lists seem pretty long--it also definitely takes its combo system pointers from DMC1, with an emphasis on pausing and timing attacks to pull off new combos.

Is it bad that I really like the dialog and the whole aesthetic so far? Dante's pretty funny all the time, everybody's dropping f-bombs and I really dig the words appearing on walls as I'm running around the loving gorgeous environments. This game is awash in loving color, it's fantastic to look at.

The combat's a bit shallow still, and the boss fights are fairly easy (I'm only after the second one though). It's lacking in that knuckle-breaking difficulty, but I'm really digging the vibe so far, especially since i got the game for free.

The aesthetic of how stuff in Limbo effects the real world and the satire of it all is pretty good, just the developers were super-hyping it in interviews about how it would change the course of storytelling in video games and such. There actually are a couple of cool bosses later on but in general they're the biggest letdown of the game.

I was going to write something similar. I didn't really follow much of the game after it was released, but I picked it up at $40 and told everyone I know to buy it and play it immediately. It was also one of my favorite games last year. It wasn't the perfect platformer, but it oozed so much charm and had such astoundingly good voice acting and humor that I just loved playing it. I think at $7 it's something everyone should at least try, I really do.

DMC is much better than I expected even if it is way too easy for me after playing the rest of the series. I really like the art design of its world, I think the platforming is fun, and Dante actually is funny. He was the part I was worried most about but he's actually good, it's the rest of the cast that ranges from bad to boring. It's nowhere near as serious as I feared, which is great. I kind of hate the music, but I've never liked the music in this series.
