I had a dream last night that I found a video on Youtube where six divers were swimming around in the ocean, and the ghost of Steve Irwin came up shook the hand of one, and swam off like a dolphin. I was so excited to share the video and was happily making a gif... and then I woke up. So instead, here's the most entertaining "Steve Irwin's ghost" gif I could find.

I don't know if there's a name for the process, but a lot of it is just applying the image to a 3D plane and moving around vertexes. Some requires more work in actually layering the stuff, so you'll need to fill in the background before you move something. It's not really that complicated, and it produces a neat effect.
