It's an odd position to take which I wouldn't normally, but something about this kinda bugs me. I can definitely see that, I think you mean to say "cheapens" rather than "demeans". Guyana: Cult Of The Damned already exists and came out like two minutes after the actual massacre at Jonestown so I'm not as disturbed by the motif when a movie like, say, Zero Day. ZD is a very similar idea to this one and much more contemporaneous film to the event it's portraying (and a really good movie, one of the few FF movies I would say is great). It's Ti West, so I trust it's not just a bald recapitulation of things we already know or things that are seared in our minds about this historical event sexed up by the hip FF trend, but on the other hand, if Ti West made a movie about a thinly veiled Adam Lanza or something I'd probably have a similar reaction.

I saw a pretty sleazy 70's exploitation retelling (e: the one mentioned above, I think), but viewing it through that lens, just the fact of it being made directly after the event made it super interesting. This I'm not interested in, even though I loved (all but the end of) House of the Devil. It would've been neat if he actually stepped up and made the real Jim Jones movie in all dead seriousness instead of selling to the same midnight movie crowd. e: I guess if Eli Roth has to produce, there's most of your tone decided for you. HUNDU THE BEAST GOD posted:What's that even entail? It might because the People's Temple, before Jim Jones went all off the rails, had some good points. Jones had actually started the church up as way to espouse Marxist ideals through a religious format, since it was difficult for Cold War-era America to embrace those beliefs. It was also largely inclusive, reaching out to the poor urban African-American community. The reason they moved to Guyana was because Jones felt corporate-run capitalist America had become "too racist" and it would give their African-American members "a place in a black country where our black members could live in peace". In San Francisco, when they started to be fairly political, you even had contemporary politicians such as Harvey Milk speaking at People's Temple rallies and Jones help organized volunteers for George Moscone's close win in the mayoral election. Jones even met with Vice President Walter Mondale and President Jimmy Carter praised him even when the investigations started. Young Freud fucked around with this message at 17:07 on Feb 22, 2014 |

Ah, if you said "People's Temple" apologist, I might've come to that conclusion. But clearly Jonestown was the beginning of something else entirely.

I think it's hard to remove the People's Temple from Jim Jones and Jonestown, since the People's Temple as an organization didn't survive past the massacre. It's not like the Branch Davidians or Aum Shinriyko (now known as Aleph), which have distanced themselves from their leaderships' past actions. As for the massacre itself, Jim Jones intended for the mass suicide as some sort of socialist Masada. After he killed himself, he had the remaining funds donated to the USSR. That's all I can probably say positive about it. Young Freud fucked around with this message at 17:44 on Feb 22, 2014 |

Pourin outta 40: My Kid Made This part 5 I don't know many "ladies" that go around dressing like that. Hussy. Featuring: Intense Nun! Broken Neck Woman! the Popcorn Humper! the Creeper Bros! and the Ghost of the woman-who-was-just-a-head-and-one-shoulder! Oh that Kill Squad, always turning up when half the job's done. Sure he remembered to bring the storm, but where's the potato salad? Asleep on the job again? You're fired Thompson! Robopig! Cross-Eyed Reaper! Sleepy Man! Waking up on the beach! Sleeping in the Tub! and... umm... Zardoz? Because nothing says blood-thumping action like pastels.

If only it was an snail crawling along a straight razor. Like, close, but not close. EDIT: I just mean I want to see that. Not a picture, but if they're going to draw it, they might as well go the whole way. Could be cool.

I really like minimalist posters with things on them that even die-hard fans might not recognise. It turns the conversation into a discussion of how much smarter I am. I'm considering making and selling posters like this with obscure poo poo on it, but none of which is actually in the film so you have to take my word for it.
