folding@home is hard to do and hard to verify, anyone who wants to verify a work unit must do the same work unit again

hashing is hard to do and easy to verify, anyone who wants to verify a hash just hashes the final inputs and gets the result

I feel like everyday there is a NEW coin ready to be mined. Is it me or things just going to far for these waves of coins that are only different to other scrypt coins by cap, name, logo, and whether it has been premined? Thoughts?

Agreed. The rate at which new coins are arriving is dizzying.
I associate this craze to this: Tulip Mania
The only value in these coins is speculative right now. When this frenzy collapses, there might be a few survivors that have innovated enough to be taken seriously.
There's already some great steps in the right direction with scrypt replacing SHA2 to solve a problem with custom miners, proof-of-stake rather than proof-of-work systems, and so on. But it still has a long way to go before it will be as pervasive as cash.

What an idiot. Self-regulation doesn't mean nobody makes mistakes (because it's impossible in real world). It means mistakes aren't forgiven. MtGox is a proof self-regulation works: its market share has already fallen* to 50% from >90% in the past.

from what i've heard on that one, the judge denied the appeal. turns out that the reason they thought they weren't served is that they moved offices a couple of years ago and never updated their registered address. since it's their responsibility to keep that updated, not the court's, it was their own drat fault and "we are dumbasses" turns out to not be a valid reason for appeal

Moving abroad and living off my Bitcoins for the next year. Anyone interested in my experience? (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 8 hours ago* by BitcoinSubAcc

I'm currently planning to move from the Netherlands to Berlin in Germany and live off my ฿20 and an emergency fund of ฿5.50 for the next 6 - 12 months giving me an allowance of around ฿1.66/month. Originally I did not think about documenting this journey but figured you guys might be interested in my experience. I also won't be looking for any donations I am just interested in sharing my experience with others.

This also is a long term plan. I am 27 and German but grew up in the Netherlands. After dropping out of film school last year I want to move to Berlin with my camera and audio equipment to try to kick start a career in film as either a audio recordist or camera operator / assistant for small productions. This could either end in a disaster or turn out really nice for me because I really do have a burning passion for working in film.

I would primarily try to find stores and businesses that accept Bitcoin and buy from them. A small amount of my monthly allowance would be turned into cash through Localbitcoins and until I find a cheap room to live in I will be renting through 9flats.com. Additionally I will be looking for non-film related jobs that pay in fiat so I won't have to burn through my coins and survive on BTC as long as possible. I'm planning on moving within the next two weeks with nothing but a backpack with the bare minimum, my laptop and a foam case with my video and audio equipment.

edit: Thanks a lot guys! I really did not anticipate this much comments or positive feedback so I am quite overwhelmed by the response. Right now I am checking reddit from my phone and will start replying to some of you once I get back home in a few hours. This also kind of makes me anxious but I will be doing it !

edit 2:I am home! But this blew up and I really need sleep, had a pretty long day. I'll be here tomorrow replying to the comments and messages, I promise! :)

why do we not have a poverty coin? (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 1 hour ago* by bonams

every passing day I believe in bitcoin for its power to liberate the poor from capitalist world that cares less about people 'born poor'.

donate a miner to each family in poverty and support the mined 'liberate-coins' by using/promoting them in developed countries

I really feel helpless waking up everyday for not being able to execute this. How can we make it happen?

when dogecoin exists with community support, why not...

[–]bonams[S] 1 point 52 minutes ago

I didnt get you, sorry

a dedicated alt coin will support only them like a local currency for community benefit/co-op

investing, loaning, allowing them to choose a job are already in works and the impact isn't satisfactory. an alt coin for their growth is a new possibility. The outcomes are more interesting when you give them the freedom to choose their economy.

[–]bonams[S] 1 point 44 minutes ago

with altcoins, global trade becomes easy, you can buy and sell any coin from anywhere, if you have interest in it.

so the pieces are lying around, one of us needs to put them together and work on ground level to scale down the technology to make it usable like m-pesa to end user

[–]takenokokoko 1 point 55 minutes ago

perhaps if these "born poor" learned self discipline and basics of investing, they could pull themselves out instead of perpetually waiting for some rich benifcator to come and rescue them. surely they can save $100 to invest in bitcoin, perhaps a few years from now they will be wealthy enough to become the elite in their respective homelands.
