Yup. It's why a lot of us in the program are keeping mum on hard release plans. There are a lot of problems with ID@Xbox, and it isn't clear yet if they can be worked around by we smaller devs.

Sony would be in a great position here to go "hey!" and sweep a lot of Microsoft's game support by making a few relatively cheap concessions. I doubt they will (they have plenty of support as is), but it would be a cute little cherry on top of their pro-indie marketing thus far.

In any case, what Microsoft is asking right now is more than most are willing to offer. They caved for Vlambeer, and if they don't do the same for others of us, you can expect that "big list of indies signed up!" to dwindle to nothing. Which'd be sad.

Yeah, as I understand it there's basically no downside to signing up for ID@Xbox (free dev kit, hence why everyone and their pet dogs are signing up for it), but the release parity clause is a big roadblock to actually releasing anything if you've already got a deal with Sony. I wouldn't be too surprised if that gets swept away sooner rather than later, but as it is it's hamstung the Xbone's digital lineup for the short to medium term.

On the other side of the fence, Sony's got the advantage of a couple of third party development houses that seems to be specialising in porting indie games to Sony platforms (namely, Curve and DoubleEleven, Amusingly, Curve's handling the Vita port of Mousecraft that's resulted in Crunching Koalas getting their knickers in a twist over aforementioned release parity clause). As you point out though, it's not like Sony's hurting for indie support (or actual games announced).

How do they connect to your 360? Are they using piggyback cables on the red/white stereo?

You would need something like this, plus the optical cable, plus the stereo cable, and obviously plus the adapter.

And I don't even know if that will actually work because I've never tried it.

It's a mess.

Edit: Microsoft could have avoided all of that by allowing USB soundcards like Sony does. They're like $5.

Wait, what's this "Suspend and Resume" feature? I just Googled it and like the only articles about it are from mid-2013. Literally the first page on Google has nothing dated more recently than the Xbone release. It actually sounds kind of awesome. Dead Rising 3 takes so long to start up from a cold system boot (2-3 minutes?) that it almost makes me not want to play it if I only have ~30 minutes or so free.

E: Dammit the Xbone has so many potentially cool features that are terrible in terms of execution. At least I'm comforted by knowing that the PS4 is just as bad and Resogun is its only launch window game. I should have learned not to buy consoles at launch after buying a PS3 last time around. Also I hate 3D, but I've never seen an explanation for how the gently caress the PS4 and Xbone are unable to play 3D movies. Isn't this something that $100 blu-ray players could do in like, 2008?

If everything I've heard from a few friends is true, the media capabilities of both the X1 and PS4 are FAR worse than that of the PS3 (which is FAR was that the media capabilities of a Raspberry Pi sans Blueray).

I have no idea what you're trying to say here because by no measure I can think of was Resogun the only launch window game, it wasn't even the only free-with-PS+ launch game. It launched with 2 other exclusives (Knack, Killzone: Shadow Fall and Contrast EDIT Contrast isn't on the Xbox One but is on 360, PS3 and Windows/Steam) as well as all the multiplats (Madden, NBA 2K14, COD Ghosts, Battlefield 4, NFS Rivals etc.)

I'm definitely surprised by the lack of 3D support, especially considering the PS3 does it, although there are definitely some weird specifics in terms of how it's done; each "eye" is its own 1920x1080 video track and the console has to be able to process the signal in different ways depending on the TV. Come to think of it, it probably has something to do with the multitasking of both consoles, since active shutter 3D requires a very high refresh rate that would probably break the multitasking capabilities; I think you pretty much have to dedicate your playing machine 100% to the task, snapping would break the effect entirely and be impossible if you used side-by-side 3D.

Yeah, 99% of the reason I got the bone over the PS4 is that there were exactly zero games for the PS4 that I couldnt get on another system. My top 5 played games are on the bone are Forza, Dead Rising, Battlefield, Peggle, and Madden. 3 of those games arent on another system and all 3 are really good. I havent played Knack but I didnt like Killzone much at all. Resogun was the only exclusive launch title that I would have actually bought on the PS4. I had both a PS4 and an xbone reserved and cancelled the PS4 because why buy a system where I can get every game I want to play on it on the other system I have preordered or on my PC?

I have 3 friends that bought a PS4. One has not purchased a game for it yet (seriously). One was pretty much only playing Resogun and Marvel Lego until the system broke and he had to send it back. The third played AC4 and NBA on it and is now back to playing his PS3. I feel like the bone is getting a ton of poo poo for a shoddy launch, but hey, at least I have games to play. MJBuddy posted:

I would say Ryse is better looking just because the levels of killzone that I played were pretty bland. I played about 2 hours of the Killzone campaign at my buddys house (the one whose PS4 broke) and it felt really generic to me
(he didnt like it either). The setting and the game play and everything. I have heard good things about the multiplayer, but I didnt get a chance to play it so maybe those are better levels to look at and are more fun.

But I also didnt like the previous entries in the killzone series on my PS3, and I am pretty sure that this one is regarded as the worst by fans of the series. It certainly got the worst reviews.

Ryse is very pretty, but it does come off as a tech demo like someone said. I feel like this is better than the generic aesthetic of Killzone, but neither are particularly good games.

I just bought Killzone out of wanting to play something with great graphics on my PS4. I'm not a huge FPS player (I've enjoyed Goldeneye and Halo 2; hated Battlefield 4) and I'm genuinely enjoying Killzone. I think the game has a great balance between fast and slower paced moments. I read one review complaining about a slower paced level in out space, but I loved the atmosphere. Basically, I'd give the game a genuine recommendation to people.

Anyway, moving on: One gripe I've had about the XBOne is the 500GB hard drive. Has there been any news on when external storage will be supported I might have missed? I don't feel like breaking open the system to change the internal drive, and 500GB is small when you have game developers that love to throw 30-40GB unoptimized games out the door.

I hope that's next after the party system update.

Yeah most people are just playing the multiplatforms or bought the consoles to play those in next gen, my brother got his ps4 for FIFA and BF. I'm guessing people like that we're going for ps4 for the better performance in those titles at the moment.

And both consoles, although thin on the ground, are better than 360/ps3 were at launch. Those two were both seriously anemic for up to a year after they came out.

Well I wasnt saying that there is a lack of new stuff to play on the PS4 (as is the case with both systems), I was saying there wasnt anything to begin with. Everyone who bought either system on launch is bored right now, not just PS4 people. All I was saying was that Forza/Dead Rising/Ryse was a better exclusive launch line up than Resogun/Killzone/Knack in my own opinion which is why I bought the system. None of my own personal PS4 owning buddies liked or were interested in any of the PS4 exclusives. I was talking about playing games at and around launch, not right now. We are all in the doldrums now until Titanfall and Infamous come out.

I do have to admit, I'm looking at the Xbone line-up, and I ain't seeing much. There's Titanfall, there's Worms, there's Nutjitsu, there's Metal Gear V Prologue and then there's more or less nothing until November. The PS4 has Infamous, Drive Club, aforementioned Worms and Metal Gear and a whole pile of indie ports. I wouldn't be too surprised if "Xbone has no gaems" become a common refrain in the summer due to Microsoft being really slow to get out of the gates of courting indie developers.

[Edit] Oh, and completely forgot that Destiny is September, so there's that.

watch dogs, the division, dying light, witcher 3, trials, minecraft.

As far as being less of a media player, if you were someone who plugged in a USB drive to watch your movies, then yeah, its less. If you're like me and streamed them from your laptop, it works way easier than the 360 did. In windows 7/8 right click the movie, click play-to, then select your Xbox one. Streams perfectly, only thing you have to do is convert mkv to avi.

For the record, I'm a Microsoft employee, but I try not to be a shill. Xbone isn't perfect, but its sure as poo poo not the barely a step above Atari 2600 with an instant portal into the NSA that people are making it out to be.

Every single one of those games is also going to be on the Ps4.

e: Really, both consoles started rough, but they'll get better. You are mainly buying for a few upfront exclusives and then crossplat stuff. Xbox got you DR3, Ryse, and Peggle. Ps4 gets you Resogun, Killzone, and Knack. Infamous vs Titanfall will be the next big thing next month ( Infamous is a system seller to me, so I'm not going to discount it. ). Then Sunset Overdrive/Order a few months later. Next year will be D3/Uncharted.

After that who the heck knows.

Where they will also be better because the PS4 is more powerful.

Microsoft needs to get out the real system selling sequel here - fusion frenzy 2. Halo? Nah. Gears of War? Nope. Fusion Frenzy. Unironically.

Or I guess Halo 5 and GoW 4 even though the most recent versions of those games have been kinda bad.

Edit: I'm not trolling, and to prove that I'll say that I think the Xbox One could at least be a good secondary console, much like the Wii, if it was cheaper and had even a few good exclusives. I'll buy one a few years down the line in that case. Fusion Frenzy is one of those 'party' games that I expect Kinect would be great for, since I wont be getting a playstation camera, but would have to get a Kinect.

Both consoles have lovely launch titles and very few exclusives in the future though, I can't defend the PS4 as literally none of the exclusives appealed to me (Peggle 2 slightly appealed to me, but not 500 dollars worth of appeal)

He didn't mention exclusives. He just said games.

Yes, the ps4 is capable of running multiplats at a higher resolution. I can tell you however, I'm honestly not able to tell a difference between say, ac4 on the xbone (900p)and ac4 on the ps4(1080p) and while cod ghosts runs at 1080p on the ps4, it certainly runs a lot smoother on the xbone. I compared tomb raider on both systems as well, and I can't tell a difference at all. This was with two 27 inch monitors side by side.

The PS4 is a great console. I'm hoping to have one by my birthday or Christmas this year. I guess I don't understand why people have to only pick one and bash the other?

Oh man the other thread reminded me, I'd love a crackdown 3 that wasn't bad. Crackdown 1 got bought for the beta by my older brother, and I probably spent days worth of time just jumping around, trying to climb everything. I rented 2 and played it for a few hours then returned it and got another game (we had a cool rental place that let you return a game within a day and trade it for a different one, no fee).

Crackdown 3, Fusion Frenzy 2, I'm sure there's some other worthwhile exclusives Microsoft still holds that could encourage people to buy a bone.

Saints Row 4 is about the closest to Crackdown 3 we're ever going to get, it seems like... but - it does make a pretty good Crackdown 3.

Ah true enough. He was actually somewhat trolling by lowering the amount of overall games, rather then trying to poke fun at both consoles launch lineups.

And yeah, I like my One. I just wish I could play 360 games, since I skipped that generation and you guys forgot to bring some good games to the PC. Somewhere within the bowels of Microsoft you guys better be thinking about porting at least Fable 2, Nuts and Bolts, and ODST/Reach to the One. I'd be even happier if they came to PC as well, but I gave up on support for my favorite platform years ago.

Well no, there's one big thing you have to do you're glossing over.

You need to go to your PC to initiate a video. With that the feature is terrible for a lot of users.
