So if anyone was wondering, I got this done pretty easily. I know it's from a while ago, but I gotta ask since I've looked around the RoF forums and I can't find it. Sankis, how did you contact support? Through the forums, or through an email? Because if it's the latter, I need you to point me where. :v:

Ah Jesus the answer is no, I cannot take off in the Nieuport 11. I've restarted the campaign mission five times but as soon as my ground speed hits 30MPH it rolls on the ground and buries the left wing in the dirt and if I try correcting with the rudder it just spins out and I can never get in the air. :argh:

Just stumbled on an interesting video, an American Recon two-seater prepping for a sortie.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXGXqnWVOKQ

I always thought those turret rings must've been a bit stiff, but look at the smoothness of how the Observer swings it around when checking his Lewis guns at 2:55. I also like the canvas patches with Iron Crosses printed on them being applied to the tail of a plane at the end of the video. :v:

The aircraft is a French Salmson A2, which is unfortunately not in Rise of Flight. In fact, there seems to be a lack overall of French two-seaters and bombers in the game. The only French-built two-seater is the Breguet.

I think the most important thing is to push forward on the stick a bit. If you let the plane try to lift off without building a good speed first you lose a lot of the stabilization that your wheels should provide.

Shift-M turns off automix and Shift-R turns off autoradiator. That said, you don't need that. The important bit is probably to push forward a bit so the tail is off the ground quickly.

I use an x52 Pro for flying things. Anyone else that has one willing to share their bindings? I can't seem to make a set I'm happy with.

Edit: Also, I feel like I ask this for every flight sim but the fact that the planes tend to pull to the left and/or up when flying is normal, right?

edit: Why did they apparently not think to make runways in WW1?

Yes, the plane's tendency to pull in one direction or another is realistic and "normal" due to various forces, mostly engine torque.

As for why Aerodromes had no "runways" and were just a large open field, well thats because the ability to take off or land into the wind (for extra lift) regardless of what direction it was blowing was a big help to these early canvas eagles.

[edit] Jealous of Leo Showers German career, I decided to start one of my own, however I'll be doing this the Hard Way. I'm gonna start as an observer in mid 1916. After proving myself I'll take a few months training (leave) before transfering myself to be a two-seater pilot. My goal then will be to prove I have what it takes to be a scout pilot by shooting down an enemy plane. Then I'll transfer myself to a Jasta.

Apparently the unit I picked is in a somewhat quiet sector. Just flew the first mission, an artillery spotting mission with the unit Kommander (guess he wants to take the newbie out himself).

:gonk: Aaaaaaaaaaahhhh

Pictured above, how not to a attack a two seater. :smug:

It was actually a patrol of 3 N11s that found us and started pursuing. However since the Roland and N11 have basically identical speeds, only one was able to get within 700ish meters by diving while the other two stayed high and a kilometer away. Eventually the high pair lost interested and broke off, but I guess their over-eager buddy didn't realize it. Once we got to the mission target the Kommander started a slow circle that let the N11 get close. The N11 must've been a real novice because he just stuck to our tail firing wildly ineffectively (I'm not even sure he hit us) as I dumped a full magazine into him, killing both engine and pilot.

The actual spotting part was broken I think. Once I downed the N11 I brought up the spotting map but it was blank. I clicked on a random square and got a "NULL" message at the top, after a bit of that the waypoint changed and the Kommander flew us home. :shrug:

[edit]Wait, what the hell, they denied my claim on the Nieuport and awarded it to the Kommander!? He did poo poo all but fly in a lazy circle! I was the one manning the gun, its my kill you jerks! :argh:

Rolands are probably one of my favorite WWI planes, I will have to start a career as one. I'd also like to do RE8s, because :drat: they can pretty much do everything.

e: Personally you probably won't get credits for being an observer. I thiink it has something to do with the game counting it as whoever's plane it was, as opposed to who was manning the guns. The game/campaign may not discern the difference between kills gained with the pilot's armament and the observer's armament.

And also killing a Spad's pilot through his engine with a 20MM AP round.

Also does anyone know how the hell the artillery spotting thing works? For some reason the only grid I could click on was A-1 over and over again until the enemy troops calmly walked into the fire.

If I can handle the rudder being a pair of triggers, you can probably handle the twist. To be honest, a joystick would be nice though.

Yup, it's pretty neat. Graphics nowhere near as good as rof and the flight models are a lot more forgiving but it does a better job of actually making you feel like you're in a huge war. Good review at rps http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12/20/wot-i-think-wings-over-flanders-fields/ probably not worth the asking price unless you're a nut for WW1 aviation and old school style flight sim gaming though.

Well, first off I'd wait until they reveal what the final unlock game/extra is, because I suspect it might be another RoF DLC.

After that, it depends on what interests you, here is a basic rundown of the contents of the other packs:

Ace Pack
    Includes the field/weapon mods for all the aircraft in the Channel Battles pack
    Includes 5 different pistols (Luger, Mauser C/96, M1911, Webley-Fosbery revolver, Lebel revolver)
    Includes coloured scarves for your pilot and a variety of decorative flight-lead streamers

Bith of the Warbirds
    * Fokker E.III Eindecker
    A mid 1915 monoplane and one of the first purpose-built fighter aircraft ever. Its the weakest fighter in RoF however, so unless you want a challenge, use the Halberstadt for early careers
    * Roland C.II
    The Roland is an early/mid 1916 Two seater for Germany. At the time it had excellent performance, being reasonably agile and as fast or faster than any Allied fighters. It was used for a wide variety of missions, including as an escort fighter occasionally
    * R.E.8
    This late 1916/early 1917 British two-seater would become Britain's primary reconnaissance and spotting aircraft until the end of the war. Despite this, however, it was considered difficult to fly, somewhat unsafe, and prone to stalling with little or no warning.
    * Airco DH2
    A late 1915 British fighter, it uses a pusher configuration to get around the lack of synchonization gear. The first major single seater fighter for the British.

Ultimately the Best Fighter
    * Airco DH4
    An early/mid 1917 British two-seater, this thing was considered perhaps the best single-engine bomber of the war. It was used by the British and especially the Americans.
    * Breguet 14.B2
    A very successful mid 1917 French two seater. Noteworthy for being one of the first aircraft to use metal extensively in its frame. Also currently the only French-built two-seater in the game.
    * Fokker D.VIIIF
    This is an improved model of the Fokker D.VII in the channel battles pack. The primary difference is a better engine that provides much better high-altitude performance. Rate of Climb was improved as well, though actual speed wasn't effected much.
    * Fokker D.VIII
    The Fokker D.VIII monoplane from mid 1918 had excellent agility and easy of use. However the originally proposed engine encounter development trouble and it was forced to use the same engine as the already obsolete Fokker Dr.I, making it slow.

Bloody April
    * Albatros D.II(/lt)
    The first of the legendary Albatros series. It quickly proved superior to its enemies in mid 1916. The late model mostly just moves the radiator from the side of the fuselage to the upper wing.
    * Sopwith Pup
    A late 1916 British fighter. This thing is basically the forerunner of the Camel and is in many ways similar. Agile and deadly in skilled hands.
    * Nieuport 17C.1 "GBR"
    This is meant to be an alternative version of the N17 already in the Channel Battles pack. It removes the nose-mounted Vickers in favor of an overwing Lewis Gun (this was a common modification by pilots who didn't trust the new, somewhat unreliable synchronization gear).
    * Sopwith Triplane
    A early/mid 1917 British fighter. It had a short career, but its agility, climb rate and excellent field of view made quite an impression of its allies and enemies alike. It directly inspired the better known Fokker Dr.I which would come out half a year after the Triplane was retired from frontline use.

Battle of Saint-Mihiel
Based on the American September 1918 offensive to capture Metz, this pack comes with a campaign of pre-arranged scenarios to play that cover both sides of the battle. Some missions have you flying for Germany, and others for America.
    * Halberstadt CL.II
    A mid 1917 two-seater, the Halb CL.II was the first purpose built ground attack aircraft of the war. It was also used as an escort fighter and has pretty decent performance as such. The game includes two versions, 180HP engine and 200HP engine.
    * Sopwith Dolphin
    The replacement for the aging Camel, this early 1918 fighter retained most of the Camel's agility while improving over it in every other regard, especially high altitude performance. Its shape, however, caused some friendly fighter issues early into its deployment.
    * Pfalz D.IIIa
    A mid-1917 German scout, this plane was generally considered inferior to the Albatros D.Va, however it was liked for some pilots for being sturdier and able to sustain a dive better. It also turns better, but bleeds speed fast in those turns.
    * Bristol F2B F.II and F.III
    A mid 1917 (FII) or early/mid 1918 (FIII) British two-seater. Despite being a two-seater, the Bristol was soon discovered to be as responsive and agile as most single-seaters and was used as such. The Bristol proved so successful development and use continued into the early 30s.

~ Notice me, Shempai! ~
I've played the previous version Over Flanders Fields and it was pretty good. You really aren't going to get a more immersive single-player campaign anywhere else. The problem is that it's using the Combat Flight Simulator 3 engine from Microsoft and it has its issues even with all the work they put into it. As Megadyptes said the aircraft don't feel as good as in Rise of Flight and the visuals aren't as good in a general sense, but it's definitely an experience. You've got modeled troops moving along the lines and in the trenches and things going on all over the place and it really feels like you're playing a simulator of WWI as an aviator. Rise of Flight is pretty weak in that regard though Patrick Wilson's Campaign thing does a good job of making it more interesting and varied (it also curbs a lot of stuff from OFF/WOFF).

If you really like WWI aviation then I would say go for it. Also remember that you need a working copy of Combat Flight Simulator 3, which is another issue. Don't go into it thinking you can just buy WOFF and play you have to buy the base game from Amazon or something. WOFF is more or less a total conversion mod you pay for.

I love my pedals and I'd highly recommend getting some if they're not too expensive for your budget. I think it makes flying a lot easier and more kinetically satisfying as well as more authentic. After a while you stop thinking about your feet moving and just do it unconsciously, I can't imagine getting to quite that level with twist considering how touchy it is to do it at the same time as pitch and roll.

Downside to ending the flight? Nothing really, besides your verisimilitude. As for your buddies, are you using Pat Wilson's? In PWCG he has your flight mates just circle the aerodrome because the AI can be really stupid and crash a lot trying to land, maiming or killing pilots. Just land yourself and end the flight.

Also, the IC2ndclass seems pretty much guaranteed for any pilot who scores a kill. While the Allies tended to award medals based on valorous acts of exceptional bravery or skill, the large majority of German medals were awarded for displays of consistent success and skill, but while these standards/requirements were certainly high, they weren't necessarily unbelievable. Basically as long as a German pilot keeps racking up victories he'll earn the Blue Max. The requirement to earn the Pour le Mérite started at 8 kills, but the victory tally required moved higher and higher as the war progressed (I'm not certain if PWCG models this shifting goal post).

[edit] Also, if people really want to "roleplay" things while playing PWCG, be sure to award yourself a week or two (or more) of leave after you win a major award. Part of that is rest, part of that is being used back home as a poster-boy for success at various functions (buy war bonds!). :v:
