Kovalev's unfiltered Euroness owns. The dramatic, violent storm punishing Atlantic City added a nice little bit to tonight. Wish they got a shot of it though. Ninja PD fucked around with this message at 05:01 on Mar 30, 2014 |

I think at this point I'd want to see a fat JCCJr or a fatter Brandon Rios fight for Kovalev's strap. Gatti-Ward kept coming up tonight and we really haven't had a brutal series of fights since the Rios/Alvarado mini saga, I think that mixbag of fighters has the kind of style clashes that would appease Krusher's Atlantic. If Bernard Hopkins can beat the fourth champion, I will pick him against Stevenson *pending after Adonis' next performance, of course* if their fight happens within 4-6 months of their last defenses. Hopkins has basically used his executive powers with GB to buy himself a path to undisputed status, yet again. Forget his age, the longevity of his career is what is amazing, a big part of that must be his 'good decision making skills' inside and outside the ring even when it didn't always make everyone happy. He's also great at making out with the money (RJJr 2) which makes me think that he would be insane enough to actually lure over and fight a threat in Kovalev like he did Calzaghe only to lock him down to a contract if The Alien loses (resulting in the saddest Stevenson/Kovalev eventually).

Between giving Al Haymon free reign and the Mayweather deal I'm convinced that either: 1) Stephen Espinoza is an HBO sleeper agent trying to bankrupt Showtime 2) Golden Boy Promotions is just an elaborate ruse for Oscar to launder his career earnings

Joe Bugner has been helping Leapai prepare for his fight with Klitschko. His advice was probably the most spot on considering Leapai has a snowball in hells chance of winning. He told him to go out there and try to blitz him throwing bombs as its his only chance to take some rounds and or get a win.

So Canelo has asked Golden Boy for Erislandy Lara on July 12th, and said he doesn't give a gently caress about Lara's WBA "Regular" 154 belt and won't pay a sanctioning fee. I like Canelo.

Lara's been trying to punk Canelo-and generally looking worse for it-a while now so it makes sense. Canelo can put 350K buys against a fighter coming off a loss and a ho-hum undercard. Meanwhile Lara is stuck fighting Ishe Smith on Fox Sports 1 the night before Mayweather-Maidana. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPpHyfmDeEg&t=55s

It's crazy how many PPV events are on the schedule (or soon will be). Between Pacquiao-Bradley II, Mayweather-Maidana, Cotto-Martinez and likely Chavez-GGG, adding Canelo-Lara to the list is getting excessive. I don't give Canelo much of a shot against Lara to be honest. Lara is like a better Austin Trout. I suppose Canelo could win on activity + biased judges though. I'm writing up a Pac-Bradley thread by the way.

Really hoping that JCC Jr/GGG fight comes through. Would love to see Chavez get his rear end handed to him, and my dad would probably love to see it as well.

It's sort of ridiculous though that Jr is basically a light heavyweight and Golovkin could probably make light middle if he tried. Jr v Stevenson, now that he's with HBO, would be the most appropriate match up, although I suppose the only difference would be a quick knockout against Stevenson or a prolonged butchering against Golovkin.

Cotto's knocked 4 guys out after the tenth and been knocked out twice, he has experience both ways. Martinez knocked four guys out late but hasn't lost a fight that way that didn't go to the cards. Clearly a win for Cotto there and your Sergio fandom is betraying you again Honestly both guys are pretty old in boxing terms and I hope they bring out the best in each other one more time.

Clearly a win for Cotto there and your Sergio fandom is betraying you again It's true that both guys are old, but I think it's going to be a big deal that Cotto is going up to 160 for this fight. He's a pretty small 154 lb fighter as it is, and Sergio is the naturally bigger guy with huge height and reach advantages. Add to that an advantage in power for Martinez as well (seriously who's the last legit guy Cotto has stopped? Zab Judah like 7 years ago?), and I think that Martinez wins this one pretty easily. But I'll still be watching to see if being almost 40 has caught up with a guy who relies heavily on his speed and movement.

Yeah Cotto used to be a lightweight champion. That's one big reason that is keeping me from picking him. Martinez hasn't just fought top guys at 160 lb, he's stopped them. I think the Cotto that showed up against Mayweather has a very good chance in this fight, but I don't know if he's still that guy and I'm reluctant to read too much into the Rodriguez fight.
