Black Desert is an upcoming sandbox-oriented massively multiplayer online role-playing game by Korean video game developer Pearl Abyss.

So why should I give a poo poo about this in the sea of generic MMO's?

Korean, Japanese, Russian, are confirmed, English version in the works, publisher TBA. Also talks with Sony Computer Entertainment regarding a version for the PlayStation 4.

Release date is set for sometime in 2014 will probably be 2015 for US/EU.

Black Desert uses a free-to-play model although no further details of the business model or revenue generation have been announced.

Level 50 soft-cap (no hard-cap?)

8 classes, 3 races (human, elf, giant) They plan to add more races and classes apparently.

Some classes are gender and race locked.

No holy trinity class/roles. Instead groups stand in certain patterns that drastically boost defense or attack. For example, a group that arranges itself in a circle will boast higher defenses while a straight-line formation will boost the DPS of the lead avatar. Video Example

PvP is free for all except for a few safe zones in major cities. World-PvP is only enabled at level 30 to ensure new players are not griefed however after level 30, they are on their own.

Exp and/or partial item loss at death. Potentially dropping all equipment that is not soulbound.

Quests offer rewards and influence but no experience

Dungeons will be not be instanced.

No instant teleportation or flying.

Collision detection, body blocking for all NPC's and PC's

Day&night cycle (dawn, dusk)

You can disable motion blur, camera zooms, and most particle effects.

Dynamic weather system that also affects movement and crafting. (fog, storm)

There will be multiple keeps for your guild and guild-alliances to conquer

Housing, building your own house, and decorating it will be a thing, they will be not be instanced.

Extensive crafting and trading system

Mounted combat and breeding system. Mounts must be either caught, bred, tamed, bought, or stolen, they must be cared for, and can be lost/killed.

tl;dr
This game is probably just another sandbox hopeful that will be a stripped down shell of it's promised features on release, then fade into obscurity within the year. Look forward to it, or not, whatever, gently caress you.

Started following the game a few months ago, first CBT combat and frame rate was really rough and everyone looked the same but CBT 2 looked a hell of a lot more polished. Character creation is probably the most extensive one I've seen in any game. Combat looks tight. Armor looks not skimpy and functional. Sounds good! Oh wait... ITS KOREAN :(

When people started seeing videos of TERA/GW2/B&S/TESO/Bless I could tell which ones had full weapon hitbox collision and which ones didnt. Only TERA seemed like it had that element, and I get the same vibe with Black Desert.

PvP sounds good. I dont even care if its balanced or not, give me WoE style guild keep capturing and I would put in a lot of time in the game. Have pseudo sandbox elements like gathering and building a house or keep and its just more gravy. Let me be a catgirl princess and you'll have me forever.

But seriously, I hope against all hope that this will be the korean MMO that breaks the horrible tradition of grinding and sub par (by western standards) end game. If the pvp and sandbox elements are good then you dont even need to have a solid endgame, we can just emergent gameplay ourselves some fun. Just no more grinding please...please

Im thinking that the developers actually want this game to release in the states post haste given that their official youtube channels ask people to like them in facebook in english.

The character customization video has been watched over 500k times and it just keeps going up. Its been up for like a week.

The hype train has started already. Don't get your hopes up, it's not going to be here any time soon.

ONCE YOU POP THE FUN DONT STOP
I'm hoping the lack of level hardcap is some sort of implementation of AA/Realm Rank, ala EQ/DAoC, which actually gives organized and consistent pvp a point. For some reason, developers have yet to realize that's why DAoC was awesome. It wasn't because they had keeps. Keeps are the worst thing that keeps getting rehashed.

Korean cash shop, though. Hopefully it'll be westernized and not pay to win.

They have been internally working on an English client since last year, with several western publishers bidding for the rights.

Not that saying that means anything without an actual release date.

It all depends who gets a hold of it in NA. Trion is doing a good job with ArcheAge, I think. If it's a competent company, it should be fine.

This has been one of the most promising sounding mmos and I hope it turns out to be good. I would think by now people would learn from games like dota2 that making not rear end in a top hat cash shop stuff can make people plenty of money.

I still find it loving insane that the big trend in korean MMOs now days is to port them to Russia and China before the united states. Its like our minds are completely alien to them and they just cant find a way for their games to become hits here.

I've always heard the reasons for Russia getting them first is just due to how much of the market there plays these type of sandbox/simulator games compared to the US market. That said, the fact that they are developing an English client themselves without even having a publisher locked in is a good sign.

Or maybe they're just playing the numbers*.

Korean games just aren't as popular in the west as in the east. Probably a culture thing. The grind just doesn't appeal to westeners. On the other hand they're quite popular in the asia region, and as an added bonus they're especially happy about f2p cash shops.

Well, for me at least, it's that while KMMOs look good, once I actually start playing them it quickly becomes apparent that it's all superficial. They seem to lack a soul underneath the flashy graphics. Like going to an old west town and finding out that all the buildings and people are just cardboard cutouts. Like a WoW theme park, but without any real personality or little touches (granted I haven't played WoW in years, but there were lots of little easter eggs all over if you looked).

Tera held my interest for the longest of any KMMO, but that's because it was really fun to play.

e: I will say they're getting better. Compared to L2, where it seemed like stuff was just placed at random on a giant map and they pulled names out of a hat.

Don't lose your head over it.
Cow milking minigame at ~40seconds, GotY.

The crafting and farming looks crazy detailed, if it actually works and serves a gameplay purpose. I'm not sure what to make of the combat. The solo videos are mostly people pulling a bunch of mobs then autoattacking singles while AEs are on cooldown. The group videos do not make it clear how necessary or fun the formations are. The animations and art look great, as expected of a KMMO.

Patience
Collision detection in TERA made the PvP pretty fun. It sucked that there was no incentive to actually PvP at all. If BD delivers on its PvP and sandbox promises I can deal with it having the usual terrible Korean PvE experience. But hey maybe they'll actually learn from TERA and not make people grind one dungeon for months to get a +9 club of making GBS threads in a sock.

While I know that there is a niche of people that have been asking for something like this for a long time now, I don't see such a death penalty going over well in the West. This is one of those aspects of the game which is probably better off being altered before it comes over here.

Other than that, the game has perked my interest! I loved combat in TERA and a lot of other features sound fun. I will be following this thread for sure.

That sucks because this will get abused non-stop. Oh let's just have a lvl 20 run everywhere with us and scout all enemy groups and troll them because they can't do poo poo to him. They should just have a newbie island/area like Shadowbane did, and it's free for all after.

But hey at least this HAS World PvP.

I just want to be a punchwitch and climb all over everything and if I get that I'll probably be satisfied to a reasonable extent.

However, yeah, if there's going to be world PVP then it seems like a bad idea to me for the game to have item dropping and large EXP penalties for dying. Such harsh penalties really only avoid being crazy frustrating when the PVP aspect is largely optional.

That is a lower level area so the enemy telegraphs and speed might pick up later. That happened in Tera at least.

I never liked playing a mage in games where they had to use Staffs (they look dumb), but I always enjoyed playing them in games where they used orbs/books (Aion), Chakram-things (TERA), or any weapon you want (GW2). So, after hearing about this so called "punchwitch", I had to go to YouTube and find a video of this.

All I have to say is :catstare:

I'd prefer the climate to be relatively similar across the board compared to the patchwork feel you get trying to cram every different climate into a map smaller than Rhode Island.

There is a lot of middle ground to work with here and it has been done before. I would be surprised if the plan is for every area to look like that video. It won't bother me too much if it is, but chances are that there will be more variety than what we just saw. That video could have easily been composed of a region of areas and not the entire landscape of the game. We have no idea.

It might be possible to see the flight path and how much area it covered by comparing the zone names that popped up in the video to the interactive map linked in the OP, but that's more effort than I'm willing to do.

edit: I lied. I did the flight path.

This looks amazing. What I really like about Korean mmos is that they get that "high fantasy" look right when it comes to the landscape. Huge fairy castles, epic scenery and so on. Now they only need to stop to creating races which cater to furries and pedos and actually allow players to create characters which look like grizzled warriors and not J-Pop idols.
