The Brosnan Bonds are really great camp. Skyfall strikes a good balance between the campier ones and Casino's serious realism tone (which bored me personally).

The episode of The Simpsons where Bart overeats junk food and gets sent to fat camp (guest starring Albert Brooks as the fat camp coach) was just on TV. I loved that episode but forgot where it was located in the series' timeline. Apparently it came out in 2005? That's way later than I thought, but that officially makes it the last Simpsons episode I really enjoyed all the way through, so 9 years ago.

When I left China a tv show about a middle aged guy and his 20 year old girlfriend was all the rage. I return to find a new show has taken its place, about a middle aged woman and her 20 year old boyfriend. That's... progressive? I kind of dig the concept in a country where, as a woman, you're a spinster if you're not married before age 25. e: actually it's still bullshit, because the guy in the first show was like 50 and the woman in the second show is like... 35(!!) The only Chinese show I've ever watched is the 2012 drama "Three Kingdoms," which is loving hysterical. They spend literally all the budget on giant hats and the occasional anime fight scene. The best episode thus far has definitely been Zhao Yun fighting at Changban to rescue Liu Bei's son, taking on several thousand dudes with the baby strapped to his chest... and then this happens (which was apparently in the original novel).

That baby should've taken care of itself. Instead it shamed the family. Chinese television won't show Walken mouth-biting in Sleepy Hollow, but has several shows running during the day about snipers gorily blowing people's heads off. Frigging weird.

Has anybody seen this yet? Zizek Delenda Est http://www.leftforum.org/content/zizek-delenda-est quote:Is Slavoj Zizek a US propaganda psyop? I want to ask my comrades on the left to consider the possibility. After years of research, I have come to the conclusion that Zizek is a charlatan posing as a "Stalinist" to both discredit communists by performing a caricature Bolshevik and simultaneously, to smuggle fascist ideas including old fashioned Aryan supremacism and 19th century race theory, back into public discourse disguised as radical left critique of liberalism. I will focus on how he exploits his radical left image to spread imperialist propaganda and disinformation. I'll trace the origins of the Zizek Industry to his first anointing by the New Left Review, then edited by Quentin Hoare and Branka Magas, Croatian Nationalists and Tudjman supporters and founders of the Bosnian Institute, as the Balkan Leftist who would initiate, in 1990, the dominant strain of imperialist propaganda about Yugoslavia, and yet further back to his career as an antiMarxist, antiCommunist "dissident" and Slovene ethnic nationalist. I will discuss the way he has influenced a generation to the point where now right wing and reactionary ideas as well as pure white house disinformation and propaganda are routinely packaged as hip "lefty" and "radical" thought. No idea what this conference is but I hope somebody goes so we learn how this might affect close-readings of Human Centipede 2.

SALT CURES HAM posted:Y'all are being good about this, it's more of a general worry; I have a feeling that if everyone fixates on the MRA aspect and ignores the other issues that led to this (mental health problems, gun culture, social isolation) it'll end pretty poorly all around. As usual, the answer lies somewhere in the extreme left. MRA is abhorrent and should be abolished, but the solution is not to attack the idiots themselves, tempting as that may be. This killer is frankly not a complex case. His basic question is 'why can't I be happy - despite all my wealth, prestige and privilege.' Since, in the logic of capitalism, he has no reason to be unhappy, happiness must have been stolen from him by not only the women themselves but the support network that 'defends them' from his power. His solution was, of course, a greater display of power. His reasoning is actually rather straightforward and coherent, given you accept the idiotic premises, so I actually don't think he was all that insane. It's just basic racism and misogyny, which can't be fought by giving individual idiots a stern lecture. The whining about gun control after Sandy Hook, on either side, was just impotent non-action to prevent having to actually do something. The issue was not the number of guns, corresponding to the amount of state intervention, but the kind of state that's doing the intervening. People saying 'Obama's going to take my guns!!' do understand that there's no private solution here, which is precisely why they freaked out so vocally. The fear is not that Obama actually will take all the guns, but that the militia types will be forced to put their money where their mouth is, and actually go live in the forest like a Wolverine. In practice, 'from my cold dead hands' means 'oh god please don't kill me!' If Obama is already so dangerous that their lives are at his very whim, they should have already united against him years ago. "Give me liberty or give me death" has been twisted to include an implicit third option where the addressee just says 'no.'

Watched Ravenous again today for the first time in years. Only now realized how homoerotic that movie is. I mean, sure it's a movie about men eating another man's essence to gain strength and how afterwards that's all you'll ever want, but it goes way beyond that. The closing shots are even of two men cuddling while the movie's only woman walks away in disgust.
