If anyone is on the fence about jumping into the Jago & Litefoot series, do yourself a favor and do it now. I listened to the first story in the set, immediately had to listen to the second, and am listening to the third while I get ready for work.

Rumor is the series only gets better, so I'm excited. It's a refreshing break from the main range, and the fact that they're all ~60 minutes in length make for the perfect run-time for a Sherlock Holmes style adventure.

Big Finish does genre fiction really well, if you like their Doctor Who work you will probably like at least a few of their spinoffs or unrelated series. I grabbed the Stargate boxsets when they were on sale and really liked them, Highlander gets a lot of praise too, unfortunately a lot of the non-Who series only get one or two waves of releases before they vanish due to poor sales. (Honestly if you'd told me in 1997 that Colin Baker would have more draw than Adrian Paul or Michael Shanks... well, I would have said "Who the gently caress is Colin Baker?")

Jago and Litefoot are an absolute delight to listen to, and while I have a handful of complaints about tonal missteps first episode is a bit of a downer, which is a misleading direction for the series and a certain character's inexplicable change in characterization another Doctor Who character appears, but regresses from her "Big Finish" version to her "TV" version between seasons it's a strong, strong series that I've listened to end to end without regret.

I finished Dark Eyes 2. It feels a bit of a let down compared to Dark Eyes the first. The first one had such a wonderful scope and sense of production values, especially coming off of the Eight Doctor Adventures. Dark Eyes 2 felt squandered. I wasn't impressed with The Master at all. It certainly wasn't bad, but after Dark Eyes, it lacked the epic feel. Dark Eyes was the best Eight Doctor story out there, so I suppose it was hard to follow on.

I guess I'll have to go buy The Light at the End now.

And that is the introduction of Iris Wildthyme to the Big Finish continuity.

Actually, she made her first BF Who appearance opposite Peter Davison (and Anthony Stewart Head!) in Excelis Dawns in 2002.

Trivia about the Excelis trilogy. Due to availability, Head's stuff was recorded separately from the rest of the cast (though you can't tell in the finished product). But it wasn't like he was just reading his dialogue alone. No, they had gotten some to read lines with him. And Head was shocked to find that they had somehow managed to get . . . Mark Gatiss. He couldn't believe that they had hired one of The League of Gentlemen to just read lines with him.

Excelis was one hell of a weird story, what with Iris and Benny showing up and Head's character being about twelve different characters at once. It's like the avatar for early Big Finish in that it rides this weird edge of trying to make all the Wilderness Years stuff that came before it legitimized by employing big names and actual Who actors while explaining away the TV stories's tonal shifts and continuity errors.

Which basically means Gatiss was hanging around in the office and they said "hey Mark, can you come in and do some stuff in the studio" and he was like "oh sure!" :allears: Because I assume all the Who people just hang around together because they are all giant nerd friends IRL.

Yeah, in kind of an irritating pattern, Big Finish has taken to more or less frontloading their trilogies with the best audios, knowing that people are more likely to buy the third one for some story closure (which sometimes there just isn't). It's nice to hear that this one bucks that trend.

A comedy troupe of which Gatiss was a member. They had a TV series which ran from 1999 to 2002 on the BBC (followed by a movie a few years later), which was very popular.

I really liked The Wormery when I first listened to it and didn't realize that Iris was some sort of metacharacter of Paul Magrs'. In my vaccuum of ignorance, it was really enjoyable. Looking back I wonder if it would've been less so if I was aware of her history.

Oh poo poo you haven't seen The League of Gentlemen? Fix that mistake in your life-choices immediately!

It's a 3 season (and a Christmas Special and a movie) BBC black comedy about a small town called Royston Vasey. The inhabitants are a bunch of weirdos, creeps and hapless romantics with the bulk of the characters being played by the same three actors (who were three of the four writers of the show). It's deeply disturbing, incredibly funny and even poignant in parts, and is what introduced me to Mark Gatiss as both a writer and an actor.

It was made pre-Who revival and at one point there were plans for an ongoing sight gag where the TARDIS arrives in the town and every time you see the Doctor he's regenerated into a new body because he can't escape the town (the town's motto is "You'll Never Leave"). It also features Christopher Eccleston as the owner of a cat theater that is in direct competition with his former boss who only plays dog films at his cinema.

Edit: I feel this scene is a pretty good example of the mix of comedy and creepiness that comes up in the show.

It's fairly expensive on amazon.com but you can get the complete collection cheap on amazon UK so long as you have a multi-region DVD player (which I'm pretty sure is EVERY DVD player, you just need to find the code to turn off the artificial restriction). Here's the link though I don't know what the shipping costs would be.

I don't know if it is available through any streaming services, I guess it pays to check netflix and the like.

All 3 on-screen performers from TLoG have also been involved with Doctor Who in an acting capacity. Gatiss, as well as being a long-time writer for the revival, BF and even the New Adventures, played the Master in the first Unbound audio that had David Warner as the Doctor. Reece Shearsmith played Troughton in his brief appearance in An Adventure In Space & Time. And Steve Pemberton was the rich dude who funded River's expedition (and was trying to rescue his cousin or aunt or whatever) in Silence In The Library.

Man, the ending of An Adventure in Space and Time was amazing. David Bradley was fantastic as Hartnell, and the Matt Smith cameo was just silly enough to not ruin how touching the whole sequence was.

I enjoyed the extras on the blu-ray, too. Recreating various scenes was nice, and now I have an extra copy of "An Unearthly Child" to lend out to friends.

Also, the guy who played Troughton had his way of speaking down.

AAISAT is only available in the UK on DVD - the US release is the first time it's been made available on Bluray.

From what I remember it was said that BR doesn't sell very well in the UK and after the disappointing sales of Pride and Prejudice on BR, the BBC were turned off from the idea of giving everything a dual DVD/BR release.

Yes - no-one said the BBC was consistent with their logic!

I suspect the logic is that the sales figures of the new series are significantly higher than those that were projected for AAiSaT and so it was decided that while the new series releases can support an additional Bluray version, AAiSaT would not.

Interestingly though it appears that the fan pressure for a Bluray release has been successful and it is due out later this year on Bluray.

That's crazy. The old sets look great on blu-ray, and I would think in the US, less people would care about William Hartnell than in the UK.

One more thought: I like to think the Matt Smith moment is mainly included because Gatiss really wanted to see 11 in the First Doctor's TARDIS.
