Alright, Chernabog and I are in as Attention Spam, and we're thinking we could use someone to do all the audio related stuff, sfx, music, maybe record some voice acting. Our current game idea is something of a series of increasingly weird public access tv inspired mini games with a variety of art styles and maybe a subliminal message / mind control twist. We'll be using Unity, and our game will win Game of the Year.

I'd like to throw my hat into the ring for this as an artist - I'm by no means a pro but my spritework is OK. I'll post some samples up once I'm actually on a computer. If anyone has an idea but needs assets I'd love to help.

Huh. Well THAT'S a cool perk. Who wants a 2-month Unity Pro license? Because I have one with 100 activations on it. First come first serve. Either PM me, or message me elsewhere (@glassbottommeg or whatevs) and convince me you're a goon / an honest person that won't just leak this code and spoil the fun for everyone. This is also only open to people competing in SA GameDev. EDIT: Oh, and my contact at Unity is also working on some press attention for the eventual winners. Sounds like it'll go out through their channels. So I guess that's also kind of a prize?

I'm up for a challenge, so I'll enter. For team name... eh, I guess I'll go with Drastic Actions is Drastic Actions (仮), until I and/or future teammates can come up with something better. Hopefully it will be some kind of Bob Mould reference. I have some rough ideas, but not exactly sure of the story. Right now I am thinking it will be an 2D adventure game though, and, seeing that I'm a C# developer, it'll be done in Unity. Because t I will probably do all of the programming and that's all I'm really good for, I will need people to do basically everything else; Art, music, and others to bounce ideas off of to come up with a somewhat decent plot. PM me if you're interested. I'm in New York for time reference. Scratch that, I have no time for a game project Drastic Actions fucked around with this message at 01:42 on Jun 27, 2014 |

Game Idea: You're a kid who loves monster movies, so you and your friends decide to make some over summer break. Basically, Home Movies, but specifically the big monster genre. You have a weekly allowance you're allowed to spend, as well as the money you make selling your tapes to other kids and relatives. You might be grounded, eliminating your weekly cash bonus for a week, or your movies might not sell enough to cover the cost of the next one, so it'll be a balancing act. (maybe take a week off and cut lawns to up your cash for the next film). With each movie you make, you can choose to: A. Make your own props/equipment/costumes. These tend to break, but broken items can be scrapped for reagents used to make more props. B. Spend your earnings/weekly allowance to buy props/equipment/costumes. These last a lot longer, but are more costly to repair, often needing money in addition to reagents. You have to gauge what your audience wants next. Should you keep a monster costume for later because a sequel might be demanded, or should you scrap it to make a new suit? When you put a movie into production, you're basically setting up a charming little vignette that will play, culminating in a freeze frame of the action (complete with the selected monster, background, buildings, lighting and props) that goes on a movie poster, which will be saved and displayed in the game's main hub (so you can see your progression). Depending on complexity, you can hire/fire specialists. Getting the popular kid in your movie might open up a new audience, but he might suck at acting, lowering the happiness of your established audience, etc. Think Home Movies meets Game Dev Story. Yeah, I think my game isn't going to relate that well to the theme either. I've always wanted to do a game that uses the microphone as an input device, so I'm gonna make one where the microphone is the only input. Thinking a dirt-bike racing game where you make engine noises to accelerate. Edit: this does restrict the potential audience a bit as well so I've got that going for me too.

I've got two questions that I'm not sure if I should post here or in the Making Games Megathread. 1) I've never made a game before, and I'm having trouble coming up with ideas to turn into a game. How do you guys do it and what tips could you share? How do you filter out the potentially good ideas from the bad ones? I enjoy watching developer interviews in my spare time, and the general consensus seems to be "I was playing X game and came up with this totally rad idea", or "some really gritty life experience turned into a storyline". Problem is the creative side of me died a while ago and I just don't know where to begin to get that spark going. 2) I'm a CS major, I really want to start work on a portfolio this summer to better my chances of getting a job in the industry whenever I graduate. I can't decide weather or not I should try my hand at writing my own small engine for this years challenge or just use the Unreal Engine because UE4 looks . I know a lot of companies like to see "small finished projects" I just don't know if that means projects entirely of your own code, or just small finished games. What would you more experienced goons suggest? I've also going to sucker my roommate into doing some art assets for whatever we happen to come up with so I officially have a non-goon (+1). The words "Toilet Punch" have been stuck in my head for some strange reason all week so I guess we'll be Team Toilet Punch. Last but not least, let's up the ante here, If I don't submit an entry: Diametunim fucked around with this message at 06:43 on Jun 6, 2014 |

Do word association, take the first thing that pops into your head when you read the challenge theme and try to decide if it could ever conceivably be a game and what genre it might be (platform, rpg, fighting, rhythm, whatever). Then try to think of a way it could be made fun or unique or implement some mechanic you've always wondered would be fun. If you hate that idea, then try the second thing that pops into your head. Or google the theme and see if anything amusing catches your eye. I personally don't think there's any such thing as a "bad idea" in the sense that it has no potential. Stupid ideas can be made good ones with enough tweaking and iteration.
|
# ? Jun 6, 2014 06:45 |
|
Use an existing engine. When people say they want to see small finished projects they mean something that you wrote (even if it uses libraries you didn't write, as long as you put the mortar in there) that does something. Don't get hung up on writing everything yourself otherwise you'll never get to the point where you could even begin to call it finished.
|
# ? Jun 6, 2014 06:46 |
|
If you want to write your own engine for whatever reason, that's cool, but certainly not necessary. This isn't really the format for that (it will take you more than a month), and you should definitely get a bunch of experience working with existing engines before you attempt it. As for coming up with game ideas, that's what the month lead time is for. I'd recommend spending your time until july learning your engine of choice and doing tutorials in it. I guarantee that you'll come up with at least a couple ideas in that process. Don't worry about bad ideas. Any idea that you can implement is a good idea.

I was SO SURE I had no ideas for the theme this year. But then I went to the video game name generator and pressed the button a lot and an idea bit me. It's Super Vegan Cooking 3D. It is a Doom clone where you play as a chef who runs around 'collecting' ingredients for her recipe. Also the ingredients will fight back, because it's a Doom clone. Once you have everything, the ingredients coalesce into a miniboss. There will be one recipe per level. Don't count me in just yet, though...

A non-goon friend (artist/designer) and me (programmer) are definitely in! We've taken part in a few hackathons together but this is going to be the first thing we do together as a two-man team. Hopefully it'll work out and be the first of many No team name or idea yet... but I have seen all episodes of Tim & Eric (and Check it Out! with Dr. Steve Brule) I've previously used libGDX for all of my projects but the Unity Pro trial licence sounds really tempting.

# ? Jun 6, 2014 08:31 |
|
Hm, this is really tempting.. But I probably won't have the time for it anyway, so I'll just have a go at it alone and if I fail noone else is disappointed. I'm finding it pretty hard to come up with something that fits the theme, so I may just make a game about running a public access tv channel. EDIT: Maybe I'll try to make it a social game where you can actually create a channel, fill it with material and have other people watch and rate it? voodoo dog fucked around with this message at 10:14 on Jun 6, 2014 |
