In related messaging apps in China news, LINE (the most popular messaging software in Taiwan) is now banned in mainland China as of yesterday or today. This really sucks because I met a bunch of super cool Chinese exchange students here in Taiwan over the past year and a lot of them JUST just went back to China and we were like "Well, we can't use Facebook to keep in touch, but at least we have LINE!" Now I have no way at all to contact these people. China and its complete lack of soft power is so disappointing, they're like the evil ad executive that has no idea how to be hip with the young kids today.

state-mandated atheism sounds cool on paper, but then you realize that people who would be fundamentalist christians just choose to believe in other equally dangerous myths like the xia dynasty or chinese medicine i also feel that china is basically a dried out leaf soaked in gasoline, and christianity is an open flame just out of reach. watch how fast a chinese student who comes to the us can get converted to christianity and then convert their parents back in china over skype.

Plus the main benefit of Christianity (at least to an international student in the US) is that it provides a sense of community that is typically not available elsewhere. For obvious reasons that's not true for your average mainlander unless they're all secretly shut-ins.

We have a group of christian chinese here that volunteer to pick up new students from the airport, and they immediately start in on them with their "free pizza and jesus" stuff. I agree the sense of community is the main draw and the main thing that makes this all effective, but I think there are a ton of alienated people in the mainland as well who would be all over Christianity if it were available. As many problems as I feel it causes here, it could maybe help to counterbalance the awful "i'm out for myself gently caress everyone" mentality so many people in China are forced to have just to get by.

It's funny reading, but the numbers are there. Well before we boil ourselves to death though is the problem of us running out of places to dump waste heat like rivers since well below boiling the extra heat is doing all sorts of damage to the system. So even clean energy like fusion will have environmental considerations. I don't understand what China is trying to accomplish in regards to Hong Kong with the White Paper they released last month. All it seems to have done is show that China is untrustworthy and pushing Taiwan even further away. China's foreign policy in general seems counterproductive and ineffective.

In talking with a mainlander whose educated opinion I very much respect, I've been convinced that China doesn't give two fucks what Hong Kongers think and have been riling them up with this crap in order to impress the mainland population. Contrary to the government's insistence that China and Hong Kong must have unity, they're actually deliberately sowing division between the two populations so mainlanders see how spoiled and ungrateful Hong Kongers are and continue to support the Communist government in response.

A friend of mine has been living in Taiwan for a few years now and from I've heard from him the young people in Taiwan seem to be overwhelmingly against reunification. I was also wondering if China had effectively given up on acquiring Taiwan.
