This shit is bananas
I've never played a bullet hell in my life and this thread seems as good an excuse as any to finally try one out. A friend of mine recommended Touhou 7 so he's going to guide me through it to the best of his ability.

It will probably be completely terrible but what the hell: http://www.twitch.tv/cardinaldirection

Oh my gosh apparently there were some horrible technical difficulties that I only found out about after the fact. Sorry everyone! Gonna get those fixed for next time if there is one. I was told to start off on Lunatic and that ended up being pretty crazy but I think 20% game completion is okay for a first time. Or it might not be, I have no idea!

I can see how these can be really replayable and if anyone else has recommendations I'd be down to hear them.

Is there a stance on cheating at all? My favourite aspect about some shmups is the absurd enemy and boss design and I am far too terrible to beat these games usually, but I did have a couple I wanted to show off. Phalanx is one in particular, which has the added difficulty of taking forever if you die even once due to lack of powerups and high enemy health.

If I remember correctly I think there were a few more steps to it.

First of all you have to 1cc the game first.
After that start a new game on normal or hard and NMNB (No Miss No Bomb) all the midbosses in the first three stages.
If you did that then a secret midboss appears in stage 4.
NMNB that midboss to grant access to the secret 6th stage after beating the final boss.
The secret 6th stage is a long, brutal extra stage and beating that stage unlocks 'Exceed' difficulty.
This all has to be done on 1 credit of course and autobombs are not allowed.

Or just 1cc I don't remember. There is a secret stage in any case.

E: Also if anyone has any idea how the scoring in Black Package works feel free to tell me because I have no loving idea. Nobody figured this out in like 5 years.
I believe it has something to do with invisible speedkill chaining but I have no idea.

slowbeef posted:

One thing that was a little weird is the beginning of that looked like super unmanageable. Kudos on a 1cc of that; it looked like a nightmare.

Not sure if this is general knowledge or has been discussed yet, but there is a technique in these games called 'streaming' where you slowly tap a directional button to avoid aimed shots, to the point that you are grazing the bullets. This graze is completely risk-free anyway because you just tap. This technique is very useful in all sorts of situations with a ton of aimed bullets as moving like a spaz causes the bullets to go everywhere making a big mess.
I pull off some silly stunts to kill more enemies for score but everything in that first stage is aimed so it's not that bad if you keep that in mind.

Also thanks. Ultra is quite rough.

I'd just be embarrassed having that game associated with me less alone have the audacity to charge money for it.

eXceed 2nd is probably my favorite of all the eXceed games though as the scoring system is really fun and intuitive. It takes the Ikaruga polarity switching mechanic and takes it into very interesting directions so definitely check it out.

No, you remember correctly. I just didn't explain the whole process, because as far as I know you'd never get to the 6th stage in the first place without doing all of those things.

Incidentally, unlocking the Exceed difficulty also unlocks the secret stage in practice mode. I'm always kind of confused as to why bullet hell games only unlock levels in practice mode after you clear them without continuing, though I guess it makes some sense when dealing with secret levels.

Seems like a normal shmup but with the extra addition of replacing normal power-ups with being able to take over enemy ships.

I can't do a video at the moment, but I picked this up after work and played through a couple stages. It's pretty good, and being able to swap ships into something smaller and more agile, or into something bulkier with a bigger weapon is nice. It's pretty easy to go through the stages without dying, except for a couple places like boss fights, but going for highscores is tougher because you lose a level of your score multiplier if you get hit which can happen a lot if you're not careful. It gives you a good breakdown at the end of each stage in a level, telling you how many enemies you killed, which ship you used the most etc, as well as an accuracy rating. So you could try go for a literal no miss run if you wanted. :v:

So from what I played, for $10 it's decent and you could certainly do a lot worse with your money, WMMV and all that.

Just need to practice a bit to beat the whole game on easy. I used to be able to beat it without getting hit on normal, but as is I'll be happy if I can just beat the final boss. On my first playthrough in years I reached the final boss, so it shouldn't take too long to get past it.

To the next Generation... Let's look at GENETOS

GENETOS is quite the interesting SHMUP. You start out basically playing Space Invaders, right down to having limited shots. But, with every level you clear, the game progresses into a new generation of SHMUPs, until you arrive at full on bullet hell (well, on higher difficulties). It's a lot more forgiving than most games made as bullet hell games, both in lives given and, as far as I can tell, not locking things away behind perfect runs. It's also totally free, you can get it here: http://www.tatsuya-koyama.com/software/wg002_genetos_eng.html

I think the game is able to communicate itself clearly, so I've gone without commentary for the video. (I also couldn't think of a good way to commentate, so)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2AeXJzhxwM

That said, there are some unique things about GENETOS that are worth talking about in closer detail, I just have no idea how I'd fit them in the video.

Every level (except the final) has a main phase and a boss phase. The main phase ends on one of three conditions: TIME, in the upper left, reaching zero, NORM, which I don't know what it stands for but it goes down every time an enemy is killed, reaching zero, and ITEM, the bar in the bottom, reaching 800. The item bar is filled by collecting the green pickups that most enemies drop when killed; blue pickups are only worth points, and (except in the final level) only appear when shots are destroyed by bombs or defeating the boss.

Once any of those things happen, you are attacked by The Mutant, a boss enemy who doesn't quite fit in to the era you are currently playing through. Normal enemies continue to spawn during the first part of the boss phase, but once you collect enough items to fill the bar to 1000, your own ship evolves. I don't know what happens if TIME runs out during the boss phase.

Starting with the third ship, you have an item magnet that draws items in from the whole screen so long as you aren't firing. The effect gets stronger with each ship evolution.

The final ship has something I don't think I've seen in any other games, some kind of graze shield I guess? It's represented by the green circle around the ship, and if bullets stay in that field for a certain amount of time, they are reflected away. If there is a similar mechanic in other SHMUPs, I'd like to know.

The first boss of the final level is actually a puzzle boss; there are six orbs of three different colors, and they all need to be made the same color by shooting them until they change. Or you can suck so bad the game takes pity on you and advances anyways.

The video doesn't cover a whole other system of the game. I don't plan on this being the last video I do on GENETOS, but I don't think any followups could be called a full Let's Play either; it's a very short game, after all.

Well, I just tried it on your suggestion... it might be possible, per se, but all the fun is sucked out of it pretty quickly. I used the beginner difficulty, expecting dodging bullets with the first ship would be difficult (it actually has quite a generously small hitbox), and set out to purposely avoid items as much as possible. The recording had gone 10 minutes before I beat the second boss, and it was 20 minutes total when I beat the third boss, after getting too close to too many items and getting the second ship anyways. Then I discovered that contact with at least some enemies doesn't kill you, and I had my last life taken when I was relaxing too much trying not to shoot anything down and avoid further items. The game does have a free play mode, where you can mix and match a number of options, so after that first catastrophe, I did jump straight to the last boss with the first ship; I didn't even make a dent in the colored orbs phase (the aforementioned idiot protection kicks in after 100 seconds and boots you to the next phase), and with how the second part of the boss functions, I had no idea how close I was to making any progress, but after shooting at it for nearly 3 minutes with no items dropped, I felt it wasn't worth continuing.

I also discovered that when the TIME runs out during a boss, your score counts down instead. If that zeroes out, nothing else happens.

I hope you guys are ready for more Touhou because I made a short video to show off Danmaku Amanojaku ~ Impossible Spell Card, the latest game in the Touhou series coming in at 14.3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AZTfCibHTI

In this game bosses will shoot seemingly impossible-to-dodge bullet patterns at you and instead of dodging normally, you can use various items to cheat your way through them.
The video showcases all the items and has some No-Item clears at the end.

The game plays pretty much like your standard touhou game except that it borrows Shoot the Bullet/Double Spoilers style of game progression. There are 10 Days with each having 6-8 different scenes you can clear and after you clear enough of them you can move onto the next day.

You actually start the game with only 3 items and unlock more on Days 3 and 5 with Day 6 unlocking Sub items but I recorded this with a completed save with everything unlocked.

Oh hey, a SHMUP thread. I got something to contribute, though it doesn't have vocal commentary. Probably throw it under the expert play section?

--

Strania -The Stella Machina-

Strania is a vertical shooter where you take your conveniently color-coded mech and use an arsenal of up to nine main weapons to blow up the other side's conveniently color-coded mechs, ships, and superweapons.

I barely pull off the 1cc here on Hard difficulty, which is the middle of the three difficulty settings available. Normal is easier than this but doesn't feature the seventh stage, and Expert features suicide bullets flying out from non-popcorn enemies. Don't ask me to run Expert; I spent weeks before getting the one clean run that did not get recorded online - I was playing offline at the time. It's hard enough trying to remember the tricks I used to get through Hard after not playing it for a couple of years!

The Basics

In the top left, you have your score, lives counter, and an Overdose gauge that starts at 60% of maximum. Bottom left is your current weapon setup, with the top two being the weapons on your left and right hands respectively and the bottom one held in reserve. This will be top right and bottom right respectively for player 2. Over your mech are three line segments (though you'll generally only see two) intersecting over your hitbox. It's small enough that if you fire shots from your initial guns, you can fit in the gap between the shots. The darkened areas to the sides off the playing field are where the game briefly tracks points gained either by killing the enemy or by getting bonuses.

This game is played with a movement stick and three buttons: shoot, rotate weapons (it'll always rotate in one direction), and activate overdose when you have a full gauge.

Overdose provides three things over roughly 5.5 seconds: invincibility, faster movement speed, and a score multiplier. This score multiplier starts at 1.1x and moves up to 2.0x as the gauge winds down to empty. If you are not shooting or switching weapons when you get hit with a full gauge, the overdose automatically activates and you retain your life count, with the only direct penalties I know of being a halved overdose duration and possibly a rank reduction at the end of each stage. Whether automatically or manually triggered, be warned - the moment the gauge runs out, you are immediately vulnerable.

Recharging the overdose gauge is pretty simple. Damaging and killing enemies builds it up a little per hit, but you can get an instant 20% boost by collecting a weapon. You'll need to make sure it's a weapon you want, though, or a duplicate of one that's in your current arsenal, because certain parts of the game become more of a pain in the rear end with the wrong weapon set-ups.

(Note the English overlays over the original Japanese - that's thanks to the v1.1 patch, and it's really convenient)

Over the course of the game you'll find nine main weapons. When you clear the game, you will earn an end bonus of 1,000,000 points for each of these main weapons that gets to at least 1-dan on the kyu-dan rating scale (10 to 1-kyu, then 1 to 10-dan).
Each rank is also worth points:
10-kyu -> 1000
9-kyu -> 2000
8-kyu -> 3000
7-kyu -> 4000
6-kyu -> 5000
5-kyu -> 10000
4-kyu -> 20000
3-kyu -> 30000
2-kyu -> 40000
1-kyu -> 50000
1-dan and up -> 100000 for each rank

Assuming you get all nine to 1-dan and clear the game without continuing (as continuing will wipe your progress), you get 11,385,000 points. With scores going up to 16-~19 million, that's already over half your score!

The nine main weapons, in order where the weapon is first collected:

Sword (Purple): You start with one of these. Close range, high damage, can pass through enemies and objects in the field. You can dual-wield these and it'll change the constant sword swiping into a three=hit combo, with the third doing a special effect depending on the player. Player 1 throws shockwaves, and player two does a 360 spin.

Vulcan (Blue): A rapid firing weapon with a 5 shot spread and low damage per individual shot. Level 2 turns it into a 7-shot spread.

Missile (Blue): A homing missile that only does ok damage. Level 2 ups rate of fire and improves its tracking capabilites.

Laser (Red): A straight-firing laser that cuts through small enemies. Level 2 makes the laser wider and do more damage.

Direction (Red): A 3-way spread shot that operates like Gradius' Reverse Free Way weapon - go in one direction, and the gun fires in the opposite. Level 2 turns it into a 4-way shot.

Reflect (Red): A 2-way shot that bounces once off stage obstacles and the playing field boundary. Level 2 makes it bounce twice.

Side (Red): 2-way shot, directly to the left and right. Oddly good damage, though. Level 2 gives it slight homing.

Rocket (Blue): Fires and moves slowly with slight homing, but does big impact damage and the resulting blast adds a little more. Level 2 strengthens the impact damage and improves the homing a little bit.

Bomb (Blue): Drops explosives toward the bottom of the playing field. Does ok damage and, since the v1.1 patch, cancels bullets that make contact with the resulting explosion. I'm not sure what Level 2 improves. Damage, maybe?

Note the colors next to each of these. Depending on which side you pick (assuming you bought the Side Vower DLC; if not, you're stuck with the base game's blue), the color of that side will match the color of weapons that side can get to level 2, which can be done by collecting the same weapon on the same slot.

In addition to these, there are two other weapons that aren't considered for the end-game bonus:

Normal: You start with two of these. Basic rapid fire gun, but it's meant to be replaced quickly.

Handgun: You'll only see this in the base game's stage 7, and for good reason - only one shot can be on screen at a time!

Will Harvey hates you, and everything you stand for.

I'll update the OP this weekend, but I wish I'd mentioned my stream here. I played eXceed and Crimzon Clover tonight, but what was cool is that the community manager for Crimzon Clover actually dropped by and shot the poo poo with us.

One Nation, Under God.
Strania is a great choice of game for people who want to play something modern that isn't a danmaku game - you can see the influences of console STGs like M.U.S.H.A, Spriggan, etc but it's paced like an arcade game and puts up a decent fight. It's XBLA-only but the price is very reasonable: $10 for the base game, $5 for the Side Vower DLC which adds a second set of stages.
