Here's a few more suggestions if you want more of that sound. Buffalo are a late 60's/early 70's band with a pretty heavy sound. They're not as dark as Sabbath and their songs can be a bit proggier in terms of length and structure but they're a great example of heavy blues rock. I prefer their second album 'Volcanic Rock' but their first album 'Dead Forever' is still solid. Buffalo - Sunrise (Come My Way) Budgie also fit the role of a heavier than usual band for their time. While they most wrote 70's prog rock with heavy riffs and prominent bass lines they also put together a couple of blazing tracks like "Breadfan" and "Crash Course in Brain Surgery" along with total doom stompers like "Guts". Budgie - Guts Budgie - In the Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand Witchcraft are yet another retro band along the same lines as Graveyard and Kadaver, hell they're even from Sweden! There's not much else to say really: I quite like their album 'Firewood' because it's a nice combination of light and heavier elements, very much a 70's prog/hard rock album. People tend to agree that 'Legend' is their most cohesive effort to date with less psychedelic elements and more hard rock/metal focus. Witchcraft - I See A Man Witchcraft - It's Not Because of You And here's a list of some alternative suggestions that have Sabbath in mind but go down a different course. Blood Ceremony - Sabbath riffs with Jethro Tull flute interludes and female vocals. The s/t is really solid, not a huge fan of the follow up but it's certainly not bad. Jex Thoth - Another female-fronted retro/doom band. These guys have a strong psychedelic sound due to their use of keys and lead work. The s/t is kind of like stumbling onto a ritual in the middle of swamp. There are a ton of bands who use Black Sabbath as their sonic template, especially 80's doom metal and 90's stoner rock. These few recommendations are just bands who very similar rather than evolutions of their sound though.

The Rough Guide to Highlife is a pretty good introduction I think, it's got tunes by some major players and gives a pretty clear picture of what '50s-'60s highlife sounds like. And you've probably heard Nigeria Special, but it and other similar Nigeria comps have some highlife tunes here and there even if the emphasis is on funk. Nonesuch also released something called "Voices of Africa: High-Life and Other Popular Music" way back when but I haven't heard it. They can usually be trusted though. For individual artists, Fela's early LPs and singles are really good, everything he did before the '69 LA sessions was cool as hell highlife. The "Live at the Afro-spot" LP is straight fire, maybe my favourite album in the whole genre. I've got all that stuff on a Japanese 3CD comp called "Highlife-jazz and Afro-soul", I don't know how widely they're available elsewhere. Another favourite is Sir Victor Uwaifo, Soundway released a comp called Guitar-Boy Superstar last year but most of his LPs are worth hearing, especially the ones titled Ekassa something are total classics. Prince Nico Mbarga is pretty much required listening, his debut single (I think) "Sweet Mother" is, like, the most famous African song ever and the #1 classic of the genre. That early stuff sounds pretty naïve to me but that's just personal preference, I've some LP he did with Ikenga Super Stars of Africa who are pretty amazing I think: their LP "Late Celestine Ukwu Special" tributes the legendary singer of the same name who died in a car crash of something, it's got just two 20min tunes and is just crazy guitar interplay and improvs all the way with some little vocals to spice it up, totally chill. Orlando Julius is another really good one, his hit LP "Super Afro Soul" was released last year by Vampisoul (I think) paired with "Orlando's Afro Ideas", which isn't highlife anymore but just totally heavy funk. E.T. Mensah's comp "All For You" is a real good showcase of this rly poppy '50s and early '60s highlife which you may or may not dig, it's a bit kitchy but got some really good playing even in the lesser songs. Beyond that, you might dig Solomon Ilori, Dan Satch, Kabaka International Guitar Band, Oliver de Coque, Dr. Sir Warrior (yes, so many of them have imaginative titles, cf. juju singer Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey), Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, the aforementioned Celestine Ukwu and uhh... I can't think of any more right now. Good thing there's a ton of blogs devoted to upping obscure African LPs, innit? Glad to help.

Anyone got anything similar to Planisphere by Justice. I really its a rather narrow definition but I can't stop listening to it, something about the bass, the structure and the tone, along with the organlike sounds just sound perfect to me. I need more of it.

Weapon and Mitochondrion do a great job of mixing black and death metal I think. Always found Behemoth really overproduced in comparison. Behemoth also take a lot of influence from Nile, so look into them. And Melechesh are hardly death metal but if you like Nile you'll dig them. As for Gorguts/Artificial Brain? Thanks for the response in regards to my highlife inquiry. Anyway, I have another request. I love country music--Gram Parsons, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Johnny Cash, and Ernest Tubb, and "Nashville Skyline" are favorites. I even find Brad Paisley kind-of endearing, although I tend to prefer the older stuff. I think what I love most about country, musically at least, is the pedal-steel guitar. It creates such a beautiful, haunting sound, especially in songs about bein' lonesome. So that's pretty much what I'm looking for. I want more songs with prominent pedal-steel, preferably from the 40s-70s, but I suppose it doesn't matter. Just give me more of that sound.

I tend to like an alt-rock / indie sound but descriptions seem meaningless these days. I was pretty infatuated with Arcade Fire's "Reflektor" before I came across Vampire Weekend's new album. The lyrics in Modern Vampires of the City read like poetry, with tons of themes and references smartly thrown about throughout it, and it's just smart, and meaningful. I sound like a complete fanboy. Edit: I didn't read the OP saying to explore pitchfork. I'm dumb. Also, favorite bands: Radiohead and Arcade Fire. I'm like the progeny of two good-looking goons. It's been asked a couple of times over the years in this thread, but none of the recommendations that I saw are really doing it for me - I'm searching for stuff very similar to Death From Above 1979 - stuff that's driven by distorted bass (or is just bass/drums) and sort of danceable. The closest stuff that comes to mind is some Head Automatica stuff and if you squint just a bit, Royal Blood.
