Last year wasn't a runaway but to still easily beat out a club that had, by most accounts, a record year for the Scudetto is shameful. Troy Queef posted:Is there any way to stop the rot? I mean, the Bundesliga was considered crap no more than a decade ago and now it's being heralded as the real best league in the world. Clubs need to start throwing everything they can at Europe and have two or three teams go deep in the CL for a few years. I could be completely off base but I feel like no one wants to play in Italy because there's no real competition at the European levels and there's no real competition for the European spots, outside of a couple surprises. Basically the entire league needs an overhaul and an influx of that sweet Europe money and that ain't gonna happen in the good old boys club that is Series A.

Well give it 15 years at most and top level football will be played exclusively on the Arabian Peninsula, so English dudes have nothing to be smug about either.

Bundesliga does one thing right that no other country will ever do. They demand clubs have a positive balance if they want to signup for it.

Serie A is still just as good as any other league, their powerhouse teams are just weak relative to the powerhouses in the rest of Europe. Spending a decade or more not giving a poo poo about the secondary European competition is what hosed them over in terms of "coefficient".

I actually can't bear to watch English football. It's...i don't know, bland to me. Bundesliga is honestly pretty good sometimes. Granted it has it's own struggles like Pep murdering Bayern (not trophy wise, the enjoy ability of their game) and smaller clubs having a difficult time getting up. But it's everywhere. Just like Serie A, except there is the above by Gigi. Money would help a lot. Look at some of the stadiums for a decent example. Not just the players. That and a large amount of the clubs are in debt it seems, or what. I gathered from that sheet I saw in last years thread. Imagine if we ended up with a crazy tycoon like PSG got to invest. They haven't gotten too far in Europe with all that money... Good on Conte sticking to his guns and getting final say for his squad too.

Rossi has been left out of the squad for Real Madrid as well as Cuadrado and Roncaglia. They said that it was technical for Cuadrado and Roncaglia and medical for Rossi (who experienced some tightness in his flexor muscle). The technicality was because they wanted to test the starting line up for game 1. So why they didn't include him if he wasn't being sold is beyond me. Also, apparently Bayern are in for Savic with the injury to Javi Martinez. I don't understand how they chose him, but whatever. Probably just a rumor.

So do you guys really think "not giving a poo poo about Europe" is what makes Serie A a weaker league? I feel like I hear of younger players that are supposed to be the next big thing that peter out or get sold off. Does player development or lack of, play a part? I mean everyone loves to go hunt down some gutter snipe from Rio or Buenos Aires instead of homegrowing players. Growing player ins Italy, would (I think) make player costs lower allowing for more money to spent back on the team and grow richer talent, raising the competition of the league. That will also attract the big name foreigners, again bringing the league up. I could also be full of poo poo and half-asleep.

Homegrown players are of course cheaper but why bother investing that money at home when you can invest it in someone who will pay off now? Football is about immediate results and it's just a quicker investment when you bring in foreign talent. Im not saying I agree, I just think that's the the line of thought for a lot of clubs. Also happy ferragosto, fuckers!!!

It's also cause the smaller Italian teams on the whole are in the shitter budget-wise, practically on the brink of bankrupcy every year, so when they do have a good prospect (Bonaventura, Perin) they ask insane amounts like 15-20 millions. Then teams like Fiorentina tell Atalanta to get hosed and they buy Marin for 5 (in a year).

What a lot of it comes down to is that homegrown talent means precisely dick if we can't pay when they get great and we can't pay without giving a poo poo in Europe/ on the national stage. We could see the next Messi, the next Baggio, the next Pele, rise up through the youth ranks and they would get sniped every time by another league who has the cash to pay for them.

I understand the point that homegrown talent would be sniped, but at the same time the amount of money they command could be useful going down the line. I'm not talking about immediate ROI here, which is obviously the mentality in sports in general. I'm talking 10 years or so, like the Bundesliga managed to do.

Majority of the players signed so far are on a free, on a loan, or exchanges. It's not really that but the mixed effects of a few things: 1) new taxation rules for sponsors 2) someone ran the costs/benefits ratios of sponsoring football and was shown that it didn't pay 3) less money circulating 4) those with money actually investing in serious enterprises rather than stupid poo poo. 5) new rules concerning debts and assets of football clubs. Anyway, in the 2000s Moratti, Agnelli and Berlusconi outdid each other spending money on players who were frankly terrible. Moratti's family told him that they didn't want to pay for his toy anymore and sold the team to an ADTRW goon; Agnelli with their industrial policies can't spend lavishly on football unless they want Street riots, and Berlusconi needs to pay for his divorce and has to deal with dwindling advertisement revenues from his media empire.

Well, it isn't a mystery that Serie A was used to launder money until a few years ago. That was the case of third and fourth line sponsors, of course, not the ones you see on jerseys or while they do interviews. The 3 names I mentioned are the owners or past owners of Milan, Inter and Juventus. Roma went through some troubles too, and so did Lazio. Genoese teams are too "poor" to afford a deep roster. Thorir's Internazionale is the only team that could spend more money than the others, without image drawbacks. You can't fire workers from your factories and spend on football players (Juventus, but also in part AC Milan). Sport sponsorships in general have been put under the scrutiny of the Agenzia delle entrate, the Irs of Italy, and they're finding a lot of irregularities.

This is old news though, Berlusconi has been doing this since the 90's, and even the Sensi family was implicated with financial crimes while they owned Roma. Doesn't the Guardia di Finanza have a special sporting crimes unit because of this?

My team is the poster child of 90s and early 2000s wild spending. We bankrupted and went to play in C2 (in England you'd call it...3rd division?) in Gubbio (population: 32998, less than our stadium capacity) and us fans had to dig out the stadium and the pitch from the snow or the match would have been postponed. Yet, a good chunk of my fellow Fiorentina fans still remember fondly of the Cecchi Gori days... (what they really are missing is Batistuta, but since CG was the prez at the time, they associate).

The only thing I remember about the Cecchi Gori family is the logofor the film studio and the 9 trillion ads for every film on La Sette. I had completely forgotten that they owned Fiorentina.

The guardia di finanza are the fiscal police unit, they don't go for small fishes usually. More likely it's the Agenzia delle entrate conducting their searches. I know this because I'm a commercialista, by the way Sport sponsorships used to be dirty business at every level and in every sport, but obviously the Serie A took the lion's share.
