When Fantasy Flight Games picked up the Star Wars gaming license they launched 3 game lines; the X-Wing miniatures, the Edge of the Empire RPG, and the Star Wars LCG. Now, the RPG line has expanded out into 3 core games, each with their own supplements, the X-Wing minis game is on its 5th wave of expansion packs, and the LCG has a good handful of cycle packs and boxed expansions.

But over the last few weeks, and culminating at Gen Con 2014, FFG has been wildly expanding their Star Wars gaming offerings. The big three things we know about now are:


Armada


In a nutshell, Armada is X-Wing writ large. Snubfighters are represented by the squadron using a single game piece and the primary scale of conflict is capital ships.

Using this fancy maneuvering tool, Star Wars Armada aims to accurately represent the lumbering inertia of gigantic capital ships, compared to the nimble banks and turns of snubfighters in X-Wing.

We also got glimpses of the first wave of expansion content for Armada; looks like they're using a similar model to X-Wing.



Empire vs. Rebellion


Empire vs. Rebellion is a more traditional head-to-head card game for two players, pitting the war machine of the Empire against the plucky rag-tag Rebellion using a variety of cards



Imperial Assault


Inspired by the rule-set of Descent, this board game offers two different styles of play, a multi-mission cinematic campaign and head-to-head skirmishes. With loads of miniatures and map tiles, this is gonna be a big one.


Star Wars: Rebellion


Some manner of Star Wars Grand Strategy game? Said to be asymmetric, comes with over 150 plastic minis, has a huge 2-part board. This looks...intense. (Looks like its similar in scope to War of the Ring?)

Regardless of if I collect/play Armada (spoiler: I loving will), I'm getting a Gladiator or two. My favorite underused Star Destroyer design.

Sup, Gladiator buddy? You'll need a Victory as well, if you want to keep proper formation. Having a Nebulon B wouldn't hurt either, seeing as at the time the Gladiator was flying around, the Empire still controlled the majority of its Frigate fleet..

So as a recap, we currently know that the Victory-I and Victory-II are in, conversely the Nebulon-B Escort Frigate and Support Refit are also in. Multiple options for each hull are in, although it's not known whether the CR90a or the Gladiator SD will have hull variants. From the dumb Team Covenant video you can see that the Victory-II is better than the Victory-I, and both are stronger than the Nebulons. The Gladiator-class looks to be able to pump out more damage than the Nebulon, I can't really see anything else but I would suppose that the Gladiator will be a more squadron-orientated ship compared to the better armed VSD.

Imperials will be getting TIE Fighters, Bombers, Advanced and Interceptors. Rebels get X, Y, A and B-Wings.

Gladiators could also have improved anti-fighter defenses, or just be cheaper than Victories.

Everything seems right except the Gladiator. It has the same starfighter complement that the Victory has, and about half the firepower, maybe a third. What makes the Gladiator shine is its speed. Assume a fast capital ship with light firepower, moderate point defense weaponry, and an average fighter compliment.

I feel like the only person on the forum/world who disliked FFG's X-Wing game, but Armada looks to be at a scale I find more interesting. I'm curious how close the mechanics will be to X-Wing though, which I ended up feeling were quite boring/random. It looks like it'll have some decent variety in the core box as well- When I was trying to get into X Wing the out-of-box gameplay was pretty limited with 2 TIEs and 1 X-Wing. Even after picking up a few additional ships, the game gained no traction in my group and I felt really disappointed with it.

Have they talked about how the squadrons will work in Armada?

I can feel the complaints about variety in the X-Wing core box...but FFG is always trying to balance "Having a bunch of cool stuff in the core box" and "Keeping the core box at an affordable, casual-buy-in, price point". That's why you frequently have to buy multiples of their card game boxes/packs to have a complete tournament playset.

That's honestly why I'm surprised that the Armada starter box is so expensive.

If its anywhere near in-scale it's gonna be the size of the Tantive and probably be closer to $100

I doubt it'll be in-scale. The Tantive isn't, and I really doubt that they'd make such an iconic capital ship out of the reasonable price range for their player base to actually use. Plus I'm pretty sure compared to that Victory (which looks roughly YT sized) it'd be Rebel Transport sized, at worst.

No it won't, it's only about 2x the length of a Victory class. An SSD might be that big I guess, but the Tantive is huge compared to anything in Armada so far. An ISD in scale would probably be like half the size of the Transport for X-Wing if I had to guess, maybe 2/3rds of it.

I'm sure it'll probably be between 1/4 and 1/2 again as large as the VSD, seeing the VSD is 900 meters long and an ISD is 1600 metres long. It literally makes zero sense to have an unplayably large model in a game focusing on capital ships where sizes are already abstracted.

Or they don't have anything Victory sized. The ship you're talking about is an Assault Frigate Mk. II. It's basically the Nebulon B's bigger, meaner younger brother.

A Mon Cal cruiser would be a pretty even match for a full on ISD, and we haven't seen one of those yet either.

There is a different demo video out there too now. Cap ships have a "Squadron" rating, which is how many squadrons they can activate if they use that command in the cap-ship phase. It opens up possibilities for support ships who specialize in offensive fighter usage, for instance.

X-Wing has three normal size minis, 6 dice, some cards, and a bunch of cardboard punchouts.

Armada has three detailed models with more complicated bases (all three larger than X-Wing core minis, and the VSD substantially bigger), 9 smallish squadron minis, several plastic command dial thingies, a clicky plastic maneuver snake thing, 9 dice, some cards, and some cardboard punchouts.

Part of why X-Wing was so "cheap" was that it didn't really have a lot of components. The ships are high quality, but everything else is cards or cardboard. It was also much more mass-marketable, having a good combination of popular IP and a low enough price point to actually be carried in non-specialty stores.

Armada just can't hit that kind of price point with the same level of quality. It also doesn't quite have the same level of simplicity to make it easily marketable in stores like Target and Walmart. I think it is much more firmly targeted to the enthusiast gaming crowd, where a higher price point (and higher quantity of nice components) is more acceptable.

Well, Armada isn't gonna be out for a while yet, so if you want to move some plastic ships around right now, go with X-Wing. Its a drat solid game and has all sorts of ships out for it, so you can cherrypick whatever list tickles your fancy and just buy that and have some fun before Armada hits.

I demoed this at GenCon yesterday and it's pretty fun. The demo emphasizes how much of a brick the Victory is compared to the Neb-B/CR-90. I can also add that in the demo both sides have named Characters. There is a Luke X-Wing that has slightly different stats (but more importantly has access to "Defense Tokens" like the Capitals) and some Imperial Captain (I was playing as the Rebels so I didn't get a good look at her). Also in the demo were two different hull configurations for each of the three Capitals from the starter box.

Yeah. I've yet to play X-Wing so I'll see how I find that first but this does look interesting. How often do they release a new wave for these types of games? I'd probably wait until there were some Mon Cal ships anyway.

I'm interested to see what the hull configurations are for the CR-90.

I wish we had more info about the card abilities in Armada. The basic mechanics are solid enough, but like X-Wing the meat of the game will probably be in the cards.
