That was the weirdest way to tie the game. And... well, it's not that I mind the fact that the crowd seems to be heavily in favor of the Cardinals, but it's a little... I don't know, odd?

Tedd_Not_Ed posted:I take it you've never been to a game in Phoenix then? Sorry, but I haven't. I mean, I know the story: for the longest time, the Cardinals were the southernmost and westernmost team in major league baseball, and when KMOX went on the air, its 1.21 gigawatts of broadcasting power could reach most of the continental United States, meaning that for people who had no team near them, the Cardinals were the team they ended up hearing the most about. So I get the fact that when the team goes out west, there are a lot more Cardinals fans in the stands than you see when the Cardinals play, say, Pittsburgh. I am curious: why is it so prevalent in Phoenix?

tarlibone posted:I am curious: why is it so prevalent in Phoenix? I'm probably biased because I was raised on a steady diet of Dodgers games, but my understanding is: 1) A LOT of people in Arizona grew up, or lived their adult lives, following the Cardinals before the Diamondbacks were a thing. EDIT: Or their parents (or whoever raised them) did, and chose to raise them that way instead of seeing them end up Diamondbacks fans. 2) Spring training camps are all over Arizona and make for some REALLY strange fanbases. 3) Snowbirds usually keep their old fandoms. 4) Some people hate the gently caress out of LA, and right now the Cardinals are their best shot of expressing it. There are quite a few legitimate grievances to have with LA, but this is American sports fans (or maybe sports fans in general) we're talking about, which all too often means it's the more 'sometimes you wish they could send out therapists on a 911 call' kind of hate. dont be mean to me fucked around with this message at 02:57 on Sep 28, 2014 |

Batting your relief pitcher in a tied game in September should be a firable offense.
