Yes, Sonic Breakers will be the least of your worries soon enough.

And Elzam technically appeared here first, before being ported to Alpha 2, though he might have been mentioned in Alpha before that, I don't know.

He was mentioned in side material as Rai's brother. But he only physically showed up in the OG games first.

Also I love the Raupiter, I love the 009 because it's a good bed for weapons and it has innate double image. Oh yeah and I can't wait for Irm to get his final upgrade. Because ZAN!

"You've all learned something very important here: there are things in this world you just can't change!"
I might as well back up what I was saying about the side story. I'd post the entire thing, but it's pretty spoilery. So here's just the Elzam bits. (still might be a little spoilery if you can read Japanese)

Rai sees a mysterious black mech with a fancy crest that's kicking extra amounts of rear end. "Could it be... Brother?"

Later the SRX team blows poo poo up real good, and Major Elzam V. Branstein orders a retreat, then says "Wonderful, Raidiese...as expected of a member of the Branstein family."

I personally count that as actually showing up, since he has a couple lines. I dunno, maybe others feel differently.

And here's Rai's character bio from Alpha.

Dad: Maier, troop commander on Side 6. Brother: Elzam, who had first contact with the Aerogators. (I think, I haven't seriously tried to read the kanji here)

As always, anyone who knows Japanese better than I do is free to put in clarifications and corrections. I'm not going to pretend I did anything but skim these and try to get the gist.

And here's where I lose any sympathy for Latooni. There's got to be a better way to show her character development than turning her into fetish fuel.
edit: VVV "Girl" isn't a girl, she's a character. Nothing disturbing about thinking a character is handled badly.
edit2: For the record, I played both the OG games. I still maintain Latooni's development is handled terribly.

That's disturbing. Girl has the typical teen movie 'pretty up' scene and all of a sudden it doesn't matter to you what she's gone through, how she grows up, or anything about her. She's suddenly 'Fetish Fuel' and not worth any sympathy.

I remember this mission so clearly in the GBA original, it was basically the point where I gave up and restarted, convinced I had done something wrong and made the game unwinnable. I knew basically nothing of how the game actually worked so I had been kinda flailing up to this point but yeah, I continually ended up this mission with Tempest just annihilating everyone who didn't cast Sense so inevitably it was just Ryusei vs him with still 10000-odd HP left.

SRW is a weird series like that, but OG1 Ryusei Route especially doesn't really give you a crutch. Like Mazinger is a near constant, there's almost always a reason for that, because Mazinger is a good unit who will generally, even if you're screwing up really badly, likely to get you through. In OG1 it's the story about HOW all of these future badasses got started, so everyones running around in a poo poo grunt and picking up the next power up like a starving man, the Raupiter is your first taste of REAL power, if you know how to upgrade it. Actually, a good example is on Kyosuke's route you get the Type-0 and then in quick succession get the Alteisen and Weissritter. And the former can carry your army the moment the Type-0 leaves.

But once you know WHAT you're doing, the game pretty much folds before you. It's actually my major complaint between OG1 and OG2, for all of OG2s technical superiority. In the GBA games, OG1 has about 3-4 situations in Ryusei's route where you are not expected to kill the boss if you've been playing reasonably smart. First time we meet Elzam and the others show up soon, and then there's one moment in the late game. Also, almost exclusively, the enemy have low HP counts, So there's never a sense of being overwhelmed by giant sacks of HP grunts.

In OG2, if you aren't on Special Mode or a NG+ normal mode and you don't do things in the precise way that you HAVE to, you will go a majority of the game with retreating bosses and a feeling of spamming your best attacks to kill grunts.

For this reason alone, I have always felt OG1 was the better designed game, even if OG2 is basically better than it every where else.

I'm not sure if this is a translation thing (Because I believe there was talk that Banpresto was very strict on translations) but Irm in the GBA game at least reacted the opposite to Latooni being 14-16 (I forgot). I actually do like Irm a hell of a lot in OG, because his job is to take the place of Kouji and Banjou Haran, which is going to become evident in a few chapters. But also because he's an ADULT version of the Irm from his initial debut in Super Robot Wars 4/F where he was 18. Here he is about 28. And the person who was his SI was Ring Mao, who is also grown up, owns Mao Industries (if the last name didn't give it away) and is currently separated from Irm because he's an idiot flirt. Although in the games relationship data, Ring and Irm have a higher love relationship than I think any other couple.

I know the decision was done to do this in Alpha before OG, but I prefer Irm in his current role compared to him being yet another of the teenagers brought into the military. Also the glasses aren't that important as I understand it. All the things involved in her training were important, and the glasses are just... a tool. If they even do what she says they do. Nothing ever supports it.

I think most of the humor, though, is that Kusuha is pretty much the fan-unfavorite in the American circles; she and Bullet both are generally a case of "why should we even care" since most Western players didn't start with Alpha. In that context, the line comes across as "we get narrative economy and don't have to see as much Kusuha! Score!"

Also, I'd like to echo the hate for the Guarlions. Sonic Breaker is absurdly powerful for an elite grunt mech, and Guarlion Customs tend to be piloted by the dodgiest goddamn enemy NPCs for a good 60% of OG1's plot. Yeah, it's not the biggest threat even before the routes meet up, but it remains a constant annoyance throughout far more of the game than it should. gently caress Guarlions.

Kyosuke Route: Mission 10

We have a couple goodies to disburse before the mission gets underway. Most notable is probably this Thruster Module from the end of the last mission, which sets a mech's space terrain ranking to S. A couple of our units already have an S-rank there (notably the Weissritter and Gilliam's Gespenst-R) so I stick it on the Alteisen for the moment. I spend some cash upgrading the Alt's Revolving Stake. It gets a lot of use, and there's another property which we won't be touching on for quite a while yet.

As the Hiryu makes ready to leave the atmosphere, Tasuku commiserates with one of the crew - of course they'd be going back into space just as he finished calibrating all the robots for land-based combat. But, at least they've got that hottie from Mao Industries to help make up for it now...

He's interrupted by Excellen's groans of pain. Realizing the he's caught her in an "unladylike moment," she explains that Radha's been teaching her some yoga poses that will reputedly help maintain a beautiful figure. Still, she's going to have to give it another go later, once she's limbered up a bit, since her joints are all on the verge of breaking right now. (Tasuku thinks about this for just a second too long. I love this face.)

With the fun out of the way, Radha asks Tasuku where the Giganscudo is. Dr. Kazahara asked her to go about reconfiguring its cockpit - with Sanger having to the DCs, this is no time to be squeamish about our choice of weapons. Tasuku all-too-readily volunteers to help out, since the Giganscudo is twice the size of a normal PT. Excellen finds his sudden eagerness just a little suspicious, and tells Radha to go right ahead and put him in a couple yoga positions if he tries anything funny. Radha tries to explain that Yoga isn't a martial art, but nobody seems to be listening.

In the briefing room, Kyosuke wants Gilliam's opinion on Sanger's betrayal; Kyosuke has his doubts on whether his erstwhile leader would really turn on them, but has to admit that he hasn't known the man that long. Gilliam tells him what we already know - that Sanger is a man of strong convictions. If he's chosen his path, he intends to follow it to the end, and the team must be prepared not to hold back when fighting him. By now Kyosuke has realized that Sanger left the shuttle's cargo undamaged on purpose - which means he wants them in space for a reason.

The Hiryu has made it out of the atmosphere, and as yet there's no sign of pursuit or interception. Lefina asks about the Giganscudo's status. According to Sean, it's technically good to go, but whether anybody can pilot it is another story. It has a specialized super-robot-style control system, like the Grungust, so their PT-trained pilots don't really have the know-how to make use of it; Radha's job here is to convert the cockpit to one the crew will find more familiar.

Katina's more than ready to pilot the Giganscudo as-is, but Sean has no intention of letting a hellcat like her (Atlus) anywhere near it. She responds to this with her customary grace, but Lefina echoes Sean's reservations about using the Giganscudo. Katina thinks they're missing an opportunity here; ever since they seized Columna, the colonial forces have turned their attention to making drops on the Earth, meaning their backs are wide open.

"Or maybe it's a trap for us?"
"Yeah, probably."

:allears:

Even if it is a trap, Katina is past caring; she's had it with sitting on their collective thumb. Russell says there's no calming her down at this point, so we'd all better brace ourselves for an earthquake! Katina screams that she's not a starfish (Atlus), but before we can follow up on this particular line of thought further, Eun reports enemies inbound. Satisfied at the prospect of more killing, Katina drags Russell off to the hangar.

"XO?"
"Yes, Captain?"
"Wasn't it catfish that could predict earthquakes?"
"Yes... well, perhaps we should focus on the battle."

:eng101:Katina actually yells that she's not a sea cucumber (namako), confusing it with catfish (namazu) - tying into the Japanese myth that earthquakes were caused by a giant catfish (which grew out of the observation that catfish seemed to grow more active before an earthquake). Obviously "sea cucumber" and "catfish" are a bit harder to confuse than "namako" and "namazu," so starfish it was.

Also, Sean refers to Katina as a "wild mare" rather than a cat when explaining why he's not going to let her pilot the Giganscudo.

Mission 10: A Reunion, and the Great Shield

This title sucks. Pick one thing to have your episode be about, Banpresto.

Space. The final frontier. These are the voyages of the Hir---

oh god drat it

Well, looks like the enemy had interceptors after all... but they don't seem to be in any great hurry to come after us. Strange, considering that their space-based weaponry should hold the advantage over our machines... Katina isn't interested in such concerns, and wants to get out there already.

We're in the enemies' backyard now, so it's hardly surprising that they'd have a watchdog or two here to keep us from getting to the moon so easily. Noting that there's no sign of the shepherd, Gilliam warns about the danger of pursuit from Earth; the team had best watch their backs, or they may find themselves fighting on two fronts!

Mission objective: Kill everything.

Here's the map, with the seven SF-29 Rangzen fighters off to our west. When Gilliam mentioned pursuers, the game pointed out the empty space to the east of us (because "east" and "west" have meaning in space).

Gilliam's closest, so I have him greet the fighters while everybody else goes to greet our not-yet-arrived pursuers.

Enemy phase; let the carnage begin. I almost feel bad about this. I should've sent Bullet instead to give them a fighting chance.

Gilliam is impressively unlucky and gets hit right off. It still barely even scratches his mech.

Picture this happening five more times. Gilliam hits level 12 during all the fun.

So much for a risk of a two-front battle. Now, let's have a look at those pursuers...

Okay, new machines, but there's only two of them. This will be no trouble at---

JESUS CHRIST THEY'RE EVERYWHERE :gonk:

It's the Treue Squadron, but they're not actually pursuing the Hiryu Kai; they're escorting a shuttle with a new armored module to the L4 sector, which means they need to hold the Hiryu at bay and buy their charge some time to get away. Gilliam and Kyosuke recognize the markings, and we're given another explanation about the colonies' elite all-female squadron. (Excellen says they'd better not tell Tasuku that, or he'll try to volunteer to join them.)

"You did well to slip past the Divine Crusaders' blockade, Hiryu Kai. But how far do you think your luck can take you?"
"Hah! Treue Squad, or Tuna Squad, or whatever the hell you're called... we owe you some payback for Langley!"

:pseudo: Yes, that's actually what she calls them, except that it's an even worse gag in Japanese because "toroie" and "ootori" are even less similar words than Treue and Tuna.

Meanwhile, there's no sign of Sanger. What is he planning?

The battle mastery requirement is revealed - take out either Julia or Leona within four turns. It's a pretty easy mission, but still a bit trickier than it looks because we're up against Cosmolions, the member of the Lion series specialized for space combat. They were the only terrain-specialized Lions to be present in the original game, although they weren't in this mission originally (it was a bunch of regular Lions with Julia in a Guarlion). They're also the only terrain-specialized Lions to be worth a drat, having decent hit/dodge rates and 7500 HP apiece, giving them many more chances to take pieces out of you.

Luckily, they've still got nothing on the upgraded Weissritter (with Focus). If you're planning to cause enemy reinforcements on turn 1 (and honestly, you'd have to be trying not to do that), you'll want to preemptively position Excellen at the front to serve as a lightning rod for the Treue horde. Note that this is Leona, so the other pilots' numbers will be a bit different.

According to Excellen, after their home-field defeat they've gone to reclaim their honor on the road. Leona responds that outer space is their home field, but they have no intention of being defeated here.

If that's the case, she'll have to do a bit better than this.

This is closer to the numbers everybody else will be seeing. Radha cast Alert last turn, so the zero here isn't what you can usually expect.

No, it's usually more like this. And that's with Focus cast.

For the most part, the Cosmolions will take three hits apiece to take out. Their damage on Radha isn't too terrifying, but it'll add up considering how many there are.

Most of them go for Excellen, though, who they can't even hit. Enemies on the far left-hand side of the formation will go for Kyosuke instead as he's closest.

Kyosuke, you just needed your mothership to take a hit for you. Hang your head in shame. :colbert:

The Revolver Stake updates are showing their worth, though.

Turn 2 rolls around, and just about all of the Cosmolions have at least been damaged, so we can go to work.

Not even Katina can carve through 5000 Cosmolion health. :sigh:

Ow.

The Hiryu is there to take up the slack, though.

Russell patches Katina up.

Kyosuke and Excellen team up to kill one enemy.

Excellen weakens another enough that Bullet can snag an easy kill. She finishes her turn in the middle of the enemies on the right.

Julia doesn't like that very much. And dear god, even she's getting a zero on Excellen. Now I feel guilty for spending that money on upgrades.

"So you're the all-girls' unit. Hmmhmm... well, do you think I'd make the cut?"
"And what use would we have for a hussy like yourself?"
"Oh, don't say that. There's more to me than my looks... here, let me show you!"

Julia's Cosmolion has twice the health of the others. I think I know which of the two officers I'll be focusing on, so I don't bother having Excellen return fire here.

On the other side of the field, Leona goes for Kyosuke. He could probably take her out with a well-placed stake, so I'm just using his machine gun for the moment. (Plus it gets another 20% accuracy.)

"You're in the colonies' territory now... did you think we wouldn't notice?"
"I make a point not to underestimate my foes."
"Impressive words... let me put them to the test!"

"The ATX Team... their strength must be tested!"

"I'm not much good with guns, but no use complaining..."

”What on earth is he? Does he have no concern for his own life?"

Excellen leaves everybody around her at near-death, while Kyosuke wipes out everybody else around him.

Turn 3; Katina, Radha, and Bullet clean up the remaining Treue grunts. Right now Russell could use the levels more than anybody else on the team, so he casts Strike and moves in to finish off Leona.

Even in space, the Hiryu's crew continues to kick rear end. :smug: Still, the enemy have bought the shuttle enough time, and Julia orders the Treue fighters to withdraw.

I have to wonder what actually happens whenever an enemy officer returns from battle with their entire unit wiped out. You'd think Maier would comment on it at some point.

:toot:

There's a contact approaching from Earth - but it's not the expected shuttle.

gently caress.

Noting that it couldn't have been easy to get the Grungust Type-0 into space, Gilliam asks Sanger for an explanation. Sanger responds that they're destined to fight; he never changes. Bullet is still trying to accept the fact that he's fighting his former superior.

"Major, please explain! Why have you---"
"There is nothing more to say."

"Captain, it's time you stopped avoiding reality."
"What...?"
"Sorry, but we're in the middle of the fight. This man is just one more enemy reinforcement."

"Indeed. I have betrayed you. And thus, I am... your foe!"
"You truly believe that... Sanger Zonvolt."
"I do. When a soldier steps onto the battlefield, the only duty is to defeat the enemy. Then the answers will reveal themselves - the same answers the Aggressors once sought."
"...Answers?"

We get another objectives screen! We get to... destroy Sanger. Oh boy.

I have Gilliam use his Scan spirit to take a look at the Type-0. With 27000 HP, Sanger is far and away the beefiest foe we've faced thus far. I'll spoil it here and say that we don't actually have to destroy him; the mission will end once we've taken off around a third of his health, give or take.

Having used Sanger before, we already have some idea of his mech's capabilities, so it would probably be a good idea not to get hit. We'll start out with the people we know are safe. (Watch me get hit on a 1% here.)

"It's our first time in space together, Boss."
"You've come a long way... but this alone is not enough!"
"Boss, what are you trying to do? Can't you tell us?"
"Unless you discover it for yourselves, it will mean nothing. Show me what you can do!"
"...A quiz show would at least have given us a hint by now."
"Enough talk! Have at you!" (i am not sorry at all :colbert:)

"Boss, why not just come back already?"

"Do you expect to simply wait me out, Excellen?"

Another little thing to point out here is that now that we're fighting against Sanger, The Sword that Smites Evil is a :pcgaming:BOSS THEME:pcgaming:, meaning that this is the only music you'll be hearing while you're fighting him. Elzam's Trombe! theme is the same way, and there will be a few others shortly.

Gilliam's on deck next, with the Hiryu backing him up.

"The 'answers we sought', Sanger?"
"Yet never attained. And more urgent now than ever... for the sake of all mankind!"
"And for this, you betrayed the Federation!"

"Sanger... you have betrayed us!"

"I hold true to my convictions, Gilliam!"

"Captain Enfield! Your indecision is a fatal weakness; while it remains, you will never overcome me!"

We still need more. The Hiryu has lots of HP to spare, so Lefina's up next.

"Before you left us, you told me something. So I will fight you, Major Zonvolt... I am the captain of this ship, and I will look after my crew!"
"Well said, Lefina Enfield."

"Sanger... you really do intend to fight us..."

"Oh, my! That was a fine shot."
"Um, XO? This isn't really the time to be paying compliments..."

Just a little more. I could wait around for another turn and have somebody dodgier take care of it, but Kyosuke's just about at full health. Hopefully he can handle one hit if I stay out of sword range...

"You're fighting the colonial military now. You're at a severe disadvantage!"
"Once you've drawn your sword, you can't worry about that. There's no point in complaining about things you can't change."
"Indeed, Kyosuke. As you face this trial, you will see the meaning of the battle ahead!"

Followed immediately by "Sanger Zonvolt! What is the meaning of this battle?" :downs:

"Are you playing games with me? I expected better from you, Major Zonvolt!"
I really did expect the Hyper Blaster to do more damage than that. :psyduck:

"You've improved," Sanger says, "But I still see weakness!" And with that, he heads straight for the Hiryu. There's no time for evasive maneuvers, and considering that the Type-0's blade is called the Ship Slicing Sword for a reason, things aren't looking good.

Then Eun reports that the Hiryu's hatch has opened - and the Giganscudo is moving. It's Tasuku, who's decided to hop into the Gigan's cockpit despite the fact that it isn't properly configured yet. This unexpected trump card gives Sanger some momentary pause - but only momentary, as he will cut down all who stand in his path! As Tasuku says, it's time to roll the dice...

:ohdear: (See what it looks like when Sanger fails to kill something)

Tasuku's in no small amount of discomfort, with probably at least a couple broken ribs, but at least his hunch was right - focusing on defense is the way to go with this mech. But the Gigan is now out of commission, with its armor and drive systems shot, leaving it a sitting duck. As Lefina orders everyone to Tasuku's defense, Sanger commends the boy's spirit, but prepares to deliver the final blow.

Unexpectedly, Tasuku keeps laughing, and asks if Sanger's ever heard of the irresistible force paradox: if the unblockable sword and the impenetrable shield should happen to meet... With some surprise, Sanger realizes that the Type-0's Zankanto has a crack in the blade. Amused, he says that this will serve as a souvenir of the battle. With an admonition to Tasuku that he must continue to fight so that his cursed shield can be purified, he leaves, promising that they will fight again.

Katina is set to go after him, but Sean and Radha place higher priority on retrieving Tasuku and getting out of the area. Whatever slight hope the ATX team had regarding Sanger is now gone, and Excellen wonders what meaning could possibly come from this. If there is none, Kyosuke says, they'll just have to find their own.

In the infirmary, Tasuku's trying to milk his injuries for all the sympathy he can get, but Eun isn't having it. Turns out his ribs were saved by the Giganscudo's airbag; Katina says that after getting punched by her, this should be nothing. Maybe so, but Tasuku can't help but wonder if Eun has some kind of grudge against men; did some guy lead her on or something? Her reaction shows he was closer to the mark than he expected. He gets saved, he thinks, by Radha's arrival, only to have her propose yoga to help him recover more quickly.

Katina asks if the repairs are done (they still need more time, along with the cockpit conversion), because she's chomping at the bit to start piloting it. Radha warns her that she has to be prepared to use it against the colonies; Katina is aware of the mech's history, but under the circumstances they can't afford not to use all the weapons at their disposal. This is all flying over Tasuku's head, as he's the only one in the room who hasn't heard of the Hope Incident. Katina advises him to ask Excellen about it if he wants to know more, but he can already guess that this is what Sanger meant about purifying the cursed shield.

In the briefing room, Bullet for once has no patience for Excellen's joking attempts to cheer him up. He demands to know why Sanger's betrayal isn't bothering them. She simply says there's nothing they can do but face reality. Kyosuke agrees, saying that they have to accept the fact that Sanger is now their enemy. Cue discussion and speculation we've already had in one form or another about how Sanger hasn't really betrayed them, how this is a trial for something bigger, etc.

I really do have to say that I now prefer Ryusei's route to Kyosuke's. It's much less mentally draining to read through in that it doesn't have the same loving conversation about Sanger and the DCs and Maier and did-he-really-leave-us and what's-the-truth-of-this-battle several times a mission. :argh:

Maier welcomes Sanger, saying that his reputation precedes him. Seeing his discomfort, he asks if this is Sanger's first time in Elpis Colony, but that's not it at all; Sanger thinks Maier is far too lax with security, considering that he was fighting both the DCs and the colonies not too long ago. When Lily asks his meaning, Sanger comes out and says that he could easily be an assassin come to kill the colonies' military leader. He hasn't tried to do so because he knows Maier is sounding him out - and he wants to see the state of the colonies for himself.

Maier tells him of Elpis' history - that it was the first space colony built. Despite Federation tyranny, terrorism, and other hazards, ten more colonies were constructed to create a "motherland" in space - to provide the first step forward into the unexplored worlds beyond the Earth sphere, Sanger says. Maier agrees; much like the colonies, Earth is a bubble of air surrounded by hostile vacuum - but now, as humanity charts its path forward, the Aerogaters have come to obstruct it. Once again, humanity is faced with a trial to overcome.

Sanger reveals that he knows the war was begun by Bian and Maier to reveal the truth to the world; Maier says that's why they need Sanger on their side - to be their sword. Sanger, for his part, is willing to bear any dishonor for the sake of this cause.

That's all for today. Next time: :catstare::catstare:

"Yes. I can see that sword... Somewhere out there..."
Basically what I'm getting from this last update is that Sanger is a Final Fantasy 6 fan. No wonder he purifies the Cursed Shield--the idea of getting the Ragnarok Esper instead of the Ragnarok Giant-rear end Sword probably physically pains him, and you gotta get Ultima somehow.

And now we've been introduced to one of the other ways Banpresto tried to make Bullet into a hero. By having him be bothered by Sanger's betrayal and not being able to get the gently caress over it. This is essentially Bullet's dialogue for a good portion of OG1: Being upset over betrayals and confused over people accepting them so easily and not having angst/anger periods like he is. And you know what's worse? Bullet is going to do THE EXACT SAME poo poo in OG2 when similar events happen. And he's also going to get the exact same (or nearly the same) answers from people when he asks them "Hey, why aren't you bothered by X betraying us?".

This behavior doesn't make Bullet interesting, Banpresto. It makes him annoying.

Their Japanese name is like "training squad" or "testing squad" or something like that. "Aggressors" is a way badass localization. Their entire thing was figuring out how the gently caress you make 20-meter tall mechs fight without falling down all over the place from scratch. So they're nothing to sneeze at, but I don't think they did any actual, life-and-death combat. The Earth's been united for a long time prior to OG, so there really haven't been any wars for them to fight in prior to this.

Not just wrote the book-- they were the ones who programmed the original motion data for the mecha. Before them, in order for your robot to fire a gun you had to individually time and balance all the servos and mechanical muscles to hold up the weapon, balance it, aim it, pull the trigger, and all the subconscious motions the human body makes during the process (with variations dependent on your movement, orientation, and footing). After the Agressors, you press a button and the robot fires the gun.

They likely have years of flight hours behind the wheel. Much more, if there's any sort of conspiracy, controversy, or weirdness behind Personal Trooper technology in general, they'd have witnessed it firsthand.

And this is part of why there are so few PTs and PT Pilots in general. The Lions used by DC have controls closer to Jet Fighters, so it's a lot easier to train pilots for them than for PTs, and they're a lot cheaper to mass produce being a lot simpler mechanically.

Also, worth pointing out, at one point in a later game one of them disables the pre-programmed motion data in his mass production grunt. You see, it was too limiting to him and he needed to start judo tossing and utterly kicking the poo poo out of a much higher spec enemy. Do not gently caress with the Aggressors.

All right guys, you asked for it, so here's some of the more relevant points from the in-game library.

:siren:Glossary:siren:

Armored Module
General term for an advanced manned mechanized weapons platform. Their Tesla Drives enable them to fly and give them superior maneuverability to a fighter jet. This marked advantage has led to their being dubbed the natural enemy of the land-bound Personal Troopers.

Colonial Military Union
A unification of the ten original space colonies' military forces, as part of a reorganization of the Federation's space forces in SE 184. While a distinct force on paper, in reality the colonial forces were expected to serve under Federation command (to the frustration of many colonial officers). Excelling at space combat, they are a formidable fighting force.

Divine Crusaders
A militarized group formed out of EOTI as a result of Professor Bian Zoldark's premonitions of an alien invasion. Their stated goal is the establishment of a military regime to be vigilant against alien aggression toward the Earth sphere. The bulk of their aerial superiority stems from their secret development of maneuverable Armored Modules, as well as the F-32 fighter. While they have no allies among the federal government and military save members of EOTI, the space colonies have lent their own military force to the DCs' support. However, the Divine Crusaders also count among their numbers those driven by anti-Federation or nationalistic sentiments, as well as terrorist groups and others with less-than-noble intentions, so it remains to be seen whether they are truly united behind their leader's cause.

Earth Federation
A unified governing body that emerged from the chaos following the "Double Impact," the twin meteor strikes in the year CE 2012. Traditional national borders became local governments within the larger global regime; the Federation government focuses on issues concerning humanity as a whole, while smaller-scale and local conflicts become the responsibility of local authorities.

Earth Sphere Defense Program
Federation military initiative proposed in SE 182 by Major General Norman Sley, and now an ongoing project. As the name implies, the program's purpose is to protect the Earth Sphere from Aerogater aggression. Three bases - Langley in North America, Japan's Far East Base, and Aviano in southern Europe - are tasked with developing weapons to fight the Aerogater incursion. However, the project is not held in high regard by the Federation government and military brass.

Elpis
The first enclosed human space colony, completed in SE 075; seat of colonial authority and headquarters of the colonial military. The history of the colonies has been one of hardship and suffering: from the moment immigration to Elpis began in SE 076, adapting to the harshness of space was a constant trial; this was compounded in later years by the wave of large-scale terrorist attacks by separatist militants in SE 157 (the Nozomi Incident), the SE 172 bombing of a colony's bulkhead (the Hope Incident), and the biochemical attack of SE 184 (the Elpis Incident), resulting in countless lives tragically lost.
Nonetheless, beginning in the 160s, a peaceful movement was gaining strength and arguing for the right of self-government (NID4). Under the leadership of Brian Midcrid, who enjoyed strong popularity with the Earth, the colonies gained their independence from the Federation in SE 184 (leading to the formation of the Colonial Military Union and the appointment of Maier Branstein at its head).
Ten space colonies currently exist. In order of date of establishment: 1 - Elpis, 2 - Nozomi, 3 - Hoffnung, 4 - Wish, 5 - Espoir, 6 - Hope, 7 - Spes, 8 - Esperanza, 9 - Speranza, 10 - Nadezhda. All exist in the L4 sector of space.

:pseudo:That number 7 seems a bit out of place. Elpis was the spirit of hope trapped in Pandora's Box, according to Hesiod; the others are different words for hope in... Japanese, German, English, French, English, ???, Spanish, Italian, Russian. At this point it's looking kind of likely that I'm misreading some other language as "Space," (スペース ), but it's late and :effort:
EDIT: Sheep comes to the rescue again! Spes is the Roman counterpart to Elpis. :gifttank:

EOT
"Extra Over Technology," a blanket term for the alien technology recovered from Meteor 3 on Aidoneus Island. As head of the EOT Investigative Commission, Bian Zoldark oversaw the analysis of these discoveries, particularly their potential for improving the Earth's military power. However, information about this technology was then suppressed by the EOT Council and hidden from the general public.

EOTI
The EOT Investigative Commission, an organization founded in SE 180 to analyze the technology discovered within Meteor 3 on Aidoneus Island. Headed by Bian Zoldark, it includes the greatest scientific minds and talents in the world. (Actually it's the EOT Inquiry Organization, but I've been calling it that so far so I'm sticking with it.)

EOT Council
A high-ranking Federation body established to control the flow of information regarding Aerogater technology, superior to EOTI. Headed by a 13-member committee, foremost of whom is the chairman of the Federation Security Commission Karl Schtleseman (:frogout:). As their duty is to suppress knowledge of Meteor 3, EOT, and the strength of the Aerogaters, the council views Bian Zoldark's convictions as dangerous and monitors him closely.

Mao Industries
Manufacturer of heavy machinery, founded in the lunar city of Celevis by Tien Mao and Yuan Meilong in SE 176. Their early work on bipedal lunar walkers has led them to their current position at the forefront of Personal Trooper research and development. The company's current president is Tien's daughter, Ring Mao.

MAPW
A Mass Amplitude Preemptive-strike Weapon, a weapon with unparalleled range, power, and area of effect. Often called a "Map Weapon."
(They're reaching with that abbreviation.)

Meteor 3
A meteor that struck Aidoneus Island in the Marquesas in SE 179. EOTI's investigation of this object offered insight into the Aerogaters' intentions for the Earth. Its sudden appearance out of the L5 sector, its inexplicable deceleration prior to impact, and the discovery of EOT within its core gave further credence to this theory. The name "Meteor 3" reflects a view of the object as a successor to the meteors which devastated New York and Moscow at the end of the previous era and brought human advancement to an effective halt.

Personal Trooper
General term for human mobile weapons developed as a counter to the Aerogaters' insectoid robots. The birth of the Personal Trooper as a modern weapon is considered to be the rollout in SE 180 of Mao Industries' PTX-001, the Gespenst. Their distinguishing features are manipulators capable of wielding a variety of interchangeable weapons, as well as a high degree of bipedal and hovering mobility. The trooper's TC-OS automatically selects motion data in response to input, providing a fluid transition from the pilot's impulses into action. However, concerns among the Federation leadership about the Personal Troopers' costs have delayed their mass development; as such, the bulk of the Federation military is still comprised of tanks and fighter craft.

Special Machine
A specialized humanoid soldier, more commonly referred to as a Super Robot. Standing up to 40 meters, tall, these mobile weapons are have a unique power source and system loadout specific to that design.

Specialized Tactics Training Squad
Unit formed for the purpose of developing mobile weapon tactics and motion data, commonly known as the Aggressors. Modern PTs are equipped with the TC-OS, a base operating system programmed with motion data developed by this unit. The Aggressors had six members: their founder Kar-wai Lau, Kai Kitamura, Tempest Hawker, Sanger Zonvolt, Elzam V. Branstein, and Gilliam Yeager. Following the unit's dissolution in SE 184, its veterans attained an almost mythical status among the Federation military.

Tesla Drive
A high-performance propulsion system developed by the Tesla Reich Institute, meant to allow objects of great mass to overcome gravity without expending prohibitively large amounts of propellant. It allows equal ease of both atmospheric and space flight, and was initially designed for use aboard large vessels. However, the technology discovered within Meteor 3 enabled the production of a miniaturized model that could fit on a smaller 20-meter machine; the Divine Crusaders' fleet of armored modules features a mass deployment of these flight-capable units.

T-Link System
System developed by the SRX Project's Kenzo Kobayashi to harness the potential of certain gifted individuals. Especially intense thoughts from these individuals generate "T-Alpha Pulses," which the system can translate into physical force upon objects and machines. The system is capable of producing an immaterial telekinetic field which can both shield the pilot from harm and strike against enemies. Furthermore, the enhanced cognition of these individuals (a sort of sixth sense) grants superior awareness of an enemy's maneuvers and positioning. However, the system places a great strain upon the user's mind. Nonetheless, Ingram and Kenzo's project continually monitors for T-Alpha Pulses, in order to find those with what they call "telekinetic potential."

Tronium
Material discovered within Meteor 3. Providing the highest energy yield yet discovered within the solar system, it has been taken as further evidence of its vessel's artificial nature. In light of the strange metal's capabilities, the six units of Tronium retrieved from the meteor came under intense study by EOTI. After some negotiations (engineered by Major Ingram Prisken of the SRX Project), access was granted to the Federation military. The Tronium Engine was developed to harness the material's seemingly limitless potential; however, it soon became clear that human technology simply was not able to harness so much energy, resulting in the use of limiters to throttle the engine's output. While these limiters could be removed, it would be a difficult - not to mention dangerous - task for the operators involved.

I wonder how they handle voice recording for SRWs. Do they just get the actors in a booth with a script, or do they get to see animations for what they're voicing or what? Has Terada or anyone else on Team Suparobo talked about this?
