There's vague references, but only that so far: The WSJ article has slightly more detail: http://online.wsj.com/articles/u-s-china-ready-deals-to-avert-military-confrontations-1415721451 quote:Xi and Obama also reached two new agreements designed to avert military confrontations in Asia, one on notifying each other of major activities, such as military exercises, and the other on rules of behavior for encounters at sea and in the air. quote:The notification mechanism covers policy and strategy developments, and observation of military exercises and activities, while the rules of behavior include details on encounters between naval surface vessels, according to a White House statement. Which sounds like the Incsea agreements we had with the soviets.

I don't mean just Ukraine, I mean expanding the area sorties fly, sending naval vessels out further, the sub incident with Sweden and so on. Putin is clearly adopting a very provocative posture and the Chinese tend to try to avoid that level of provocation against powerful countries, but they also need the energy. Must put Xi Jinping in quite a pickle. I think you know the answer to this.

Seems to be a lot of white guys (and to a lesser extent, white women) shutting down women and PoC when they try to make the argument that getting actively involved in organized movements is more effective than carping at each other to "raise awareness". "I agree with you but think this is a more effective messaging strategy" is the opposite of a tone argument because it accepts the point being made. And having that applied to when Rev Barber came for Moral Mondays was particularly infuriating. Though given that a goodly chunk of these people I met through vaguely leftist meet ups, it probably self selects for assholes.

I've seen things about the meme-ification of social justice, and "postmodern rhetoric", how hugely complex bodies of thought with libraries worth of effort and consideration over hundreds of years are getting boiled down to a quick sound byte that ignores shitloads of history, academic thought, and understanding, and how that is a problem. The misappropriation of terms for political speech is as old as politics, but I would also say that the misappropriation of "microaggression" is different from Cruz's "Obamacare" usage, which is really more of a dog whistle (although only a tangentially racist one at this point).

And having that applied to when Rev Barber came for Moral Mondays was particularly infuriating. There's a whole lot of folks who want to go to vaguely leftist meetups to feel important and exercise some sort of power as vocal white people, and it just reinforces existing power structures and that's for sure a huge problem, and I'm not really sure what the answers. You don't want to completely lose privileged folks if they're willing to help, but it's super hard to explain to someone they've acted in a privileged manner, especially if they're already aware of the terminology and think that by acknowledging the concept they're immune to it. Something you see even on this board. There's something to be said for messaging and social media activity, there's a place for that, but yeah if that's all someone wants to do and they want to be as heard as the people out doing direct action and networking with other groups and coalition building, they suck. That's slacktivism, tied in with all the privilege isssues.

Something Awful > Debate & Discussion: "gently caress you dumb retards voting 3rd party and costing center-right Democratic candidates elections!" If Ralph Nader or some Green Party nobody cost Al Gore or John Kerry votes, then that says more about Gore and Kerry than the people who actually took the time to conscientiously vote. I voted third party in 2000 and I lived in Florida. Know why? Because gently caress Joe Lieberman that's why, then and now. I still think it was the right choice and I'd do it again, especially given what Lieberman has done since then. Would I have preferred Gore won? Of course. He DID win. But he was a poo poo candidate who ran a poo poo campaign who chose a human piece of garbage that represents everything I oppose as a running mate. Then he distanced himself from an already center-right president who was very popular and pretty successful just to pander to the center and to avoid talking about sex and adultery.

Yeah that's basically liberal boards everywhere. The system is unlikely to offer us anything besides two lovely parties with one less lovely than the other. It's also unlikely to change. People should work towards change but if you don't acknowledge it's a tough uphill battle from the beginning your'e going to burn out. Also if you do acknowledge that you're probably going to burn out.
