Main and Hastings is a worse slum than anything I've seen in the western US (never been to the east) but you'll never get mugged or be a victim of physical violence there. It's just a bunch of sad mentally ill addicts who congregate there because that's where all the social services and drugs are. Petty theft is a huge problem though. I parked my car in the longshoreman parking across the rail tracks when I worked there because they know not to gently caress with longshoremen.

Just came back from BC. The Guu branch and the Taiwanese restaurant are the only thing that redeems Aberdeen Centre. Vancouver's a hosed up place of extremes, not really like the rest of Canada. Today, I'm going to say goodbye to my wife and son, brave the bitter cold and snow (and traffic) and travel eastbound on the ice-caked Hwy 40 to my job. I will pass many a Tim Horton's, but I will not indulge. I will have CBC on in the car, they will talk about hockey, but I will not care. I will not say 'eh', even once at work. I am (a faux) Canadian. Meanwhile, do any of you remember when the Timmies box for a dozen donuts was designed to look like an actual TH restaurant? That was cool. Scaled well with hot wheels, too.

When Timmy's came to my home town people got excited because that means a dozen more jobs were coming to that shithole. Ended up that Horton's just brought in a dozen Filopino's to run the place. That soured more than a few people, but it didn't stop them from getting their double doubles though.
