I didn't actually know that we had so many people in the region, it's not something that's being heavily reported here, at any rate. I wonder how much stuff like this goes on that never sees the light of day.

Noone wants to admit to ground forces or deaths in Iraq since their constituents would most likely murder them for putting ground forces in Iraq.

Didn't US soldiers stationed at Al-Asad Airbase in Iraq mix it up with IS briefly last month?

I agree, but that was a Judd Apatow film and not one written and directed by Seth Rogen. This is the End was good, though.

Britain has sent letters to all 1100 Imam's and mosques in England asking them to talk about how it's cool to be both British and Muslim (false, neither are cool) following the terror level warning going from "Fookin' Paki!" to "Right, Give That loving Muzzie oval office A Kicking!" They also sent a letter to all the parents of kids attending Jewish schools as well, which were reported to say "Maybe if you shared some of your gold the Muzzies wouldn't be so angry with your people". MI5 reports three substantial terror plots that would've resulted in Dead Wankers foiled in the last few months as well. So they're having a good time over there

Muslim top gear could turn out pretty rad. If YouTube has taught me anything, it's that the Gulf monarchies have a generation of disaffected youth who fear neither death nor insurance premiums, and have spent their time practicing the craziest sideshow tricks imaginable.

The twitter account run by anti-IS people in Ar-Raqqah itself actually tweeted a report about the raid aimed at freeing James Foley when it went down, months before it was disclosed to the public. I'll see if I can find that when I'm not on my phone.

Also, this article backs up what I was talking about- http://english.shafaaq.com/index.php/politics/12492-first-ground-clash-between-isis-and-us-forces-in-iraq - but considering how it didn't really make a splash in the US media, I'd say that this was either secret squirrel stuff (at the time, IS was trying to encircle the base and probably still is) or it simply didn't happen and is BS.

Speaking of Russia, War is Boring published an interesting article on the collapse of the Russian Navy which conflicts with some talk in the USN of a "renaissance" for ole' Ivan at Sea. I tend to side more with War is Boring on the issue, especially since the Rooskies precipitous economic collapse.

I read a similar article from Reuters last year.

quote:

When Moscow moved to annex Crimea in March, the U.S. Navy promptly sailed its new flattop USS George H.W. Bush into the eastern Mediterranean to reassure NATO governments. Bush‘s battle group included no fewer than 60 high-tech warplanes and several of Washington’s modern Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, armed with missiles and guns for fighting planes, submarines and other ships.

:dong:

quote:

In response, the Kremlin sent in Kuznetsov. The aging carrier — much smaller than Bush — carried a dozen or so Sukhoi fighters. Her six escorts included just a single heavily-armed vessel, the Soviet-vintage nuclear cruiser Pyotr Velikiy. The other five ships included one small amphibious landing ship plus three support tankers and a tugboat.

The tugboat was along for a good reason. On the few occasions when Kuznetsov leaves port, she often promptly breaks down. In 2009, a short circuit sparked a fire that killed one seaman aboard the rusting vessel.

I was going to ask if we'd officially closed off the Iraq Campaign Medal, since that kept getting awarded after we transitioned from OIF to OND, but turns out we stopped awarding it officially after we "ended" the war in 2011. Since operation "Kill ISIS" now has a name dudes participating in it get GWOT-Expeditionary...apparently prior to that people weren't eligible for anything because it wasn't an official named operation.

There was a pretty funny article from a freelancer in Yemen about all the US mil/gov dudes wearing 5.11 pants and oakleys running around in Suburbans with tinted windows (I'm too lazy to go dig it up)

The thrust of the article was basically "guys, setting aside the fact that I disagree with US foreign policy and think your presence here is counterproductive towards increasing Yemen's security, you are literally the only white guys with beards, too-tight polos, and khakis running around Sana'a. You basically have a uniform that clearly marks you as OGA/JSOC/etc...could you at least try to make the smallest effort to blend in?"

Speaking of Sana'a, the Houthis are apparently not loving around.

Thats a dumb way to report the number of troops in Iraq from Canada. There's "over 600 helping in airstrikes" means that there are 600 air force and supply guys in Kuwait. There are around 60-80 in Tikrit CSOR/JTF2 advisor guys.
