A few years ago I did the Shikoku 88 temples pilgrimage (i.e. 1200 km on foot). I am going to post some pictures I took to show a different side of Japan beyond vending machines (although I saw a lot of them) and big cities like Tokyo (which I didn't visit). One of the things that struck me was how many old people live in the countryside and how many houses are abandoned. It can be pretty depressing walking through those areas Some examples of the cool temples you can visit. There are more than a hundred of them and the are mostly well taken care of. Just one of the many small shrines (often hidden and often not as well taken care of as the temples) along the way. Impressions of the nature on Shikoku. Was surprised to see wild monkeys. New motorway in the middle of nowhere. Japanese love to cover everything in concrete. Fishermen on a rock in the ocean. Morning excercise for construction workers. I was amazed how safe/laid-back Shikoku was. For example, those bikes in front of a supermarkted are not locked. Someone even left their bag just on the ground and no one touched it. Another example: Sometimes you find these unattended stall along the road. Local people leave fruits or vegetables in those stalls and they trust that you pay (inside the box on the left). You are familiar with Haribo Gold Bears, right? Some shop added this note to help sales, I assume? saucerman fucked around with this message at 02:03 on Feb 1, 2015 |

I see a lot of Charisma.com talk so I am gonna chime in with some stuff. There are 2.5 members. DJ Gonchi who, when I asked her what she did, performs. She sings choruses and hits buttons on her macbook. MC Itsuka writes all the words and melody. She collaborates with their manager to make the music and helps with production. They have two albums: I I Syndrome, their debut EP. http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/...&pf_rd_i=489986 $20 on amazon japan. There are 8 tracks. It's a mixed bag. The video with the black clad dancers and violence is for the track Hate, from this album. There is another video hiding out on the recesses of the internet for the song George. It used to be on youtube but the girls removed it for some reason. It's a cute video of them performing the song in a karaoke bar. I like the whole album, but don't recommend it as a place to start. Tracklisting: 1 - Hate 2 - Now 3 - Love 4 - Lifefull 5 - Automade 6 - Men Hera Busu 7 - George 8 - OL Hero (writing out the track names because they are in Japanese in many spots) The second album, DIStopping, came out last year and is a pop masterpiece. http://www.amazon.co.jp/DIStopping-Charisma-com/dp/B00JJNX5HO/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_y 1 - Linaduke Blue 2 - Looker 3 - Super Girl 4 - No Datte 5 - Sodaigomi No Koi 6 - Chankoi 7 - Mr. Beer 8 - Jenga Jenga 9 - Train hell 10 - Sorairowill 11 - Pain Off 12 - 100% Booby 13 - Happy Turn A masterpiece, you say? Yes indeed. This album is incredibly strong. Nearly every track, were it recorded in English, would play well on US radio. I can't believe how good this album is. Anyway, someone uplodaded both albums to youpoop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRzQvipCqSw The songs are out of order, but as they play the title comes up in the vid. I was fortunate to see them when I visited Japan. I was even more fortunate to get to hang out with them for a little less than an hour. It was interesting trying to communicate. Gonchi attended school in San Diego for a semester, but other than that, their English is rudimentary. But while chatting, I found out Itsuka had been performing as Meliyas for a few years. http://www.amazon.co.jp/MAJO-EP-%E3...FBEH9TYCKC7VJSN http://www.amazon.co.jp/MAJO-LP-%E3...FBEH9TYCKC7VJSN Both albums are interesting. It is much more rap and less pop. It kind of reminds me of early Beasties at points. Some really good tracks spread through the roughly 90 mins between two disks. The Meliyas stuff is a bit harder to find online. I know that the Majo LP is on a prominent torrent site but the EP I was only able to get off of amazon. I did initially download things but while in Japan I bought the cds I could find and ordered the others when I arrived home. I can't wait to see them perform again and chat some more. Oh, and Itsuka is loving hot in person. She looks completely different than she does on stage or in the vids. I did not recognize her when we met. It wasn't until I saw Gonchi behind that I realized what was about to happen. That's her on the right. Lot of words.

BambooEarpick posted:How grueling was it? Like, how in shape do you have to be to do it? Also, how long did it take you? Why did you decide to do it? Would you do it again? I was in good shape as I was playing soccer regularly before that but having good shoes and socks helped a lot. I met people that looked at least 60 years old who walked so it is not too bad, especially considering you can walk as slow as you want. The only thing that I found annoying was the humidity, especially after the summer rain. Took me 1.5 months, I think. Or was it 2.5 months? Can't remember... Edit: 2 months, apparently? And I totally forgot that I did the Trans-Siberian Railway just before Japan. My reason for doing it was that I wanted to go to Japan but I was more interested in the culture, history and nature than being a weirdo . Well, this was also after I finished my degree so I wanted to do something that is different. I am not religous or spiritual at all so for me it was just an interesting experience to see how religion works in a different country. The cool thing is that there is no compulsion or strict rules in this pilgrimage - you do what you feel comfortable with and everyone has their own reasons for doing it. Thinking about it, this is very different from how regulated Japanese society is. Would I do it again? Oh yeah, definitely. As I was looking through my pictures I remembered that I had a really good time. Lots of memories and stories to tell. saucerman fucked around with this message at 06:42 on Feb 1, 2015 |

Been to Japan several times, stayed for several months. Awesome cities and beautiful country side. Taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Fukuoka was fun. Food was delicious and the 7-11's are the best. Going back to Japan within the next few years, looking forward to it. I'll just do an image dump since this is japan dot jpeg. Most photos are from Fukuoka/Tokyo/surrounding areas. I'll do a food post later.
