No matter what, you're going to need to buy a video capture device that can handle HDMI. However, there's a important side question: Do you need to play anything that needs fast reaction times and/or Wiimotes? Most capture cards are going to add about 1/4 of a second of lag between the console putting out a frame (or a sound) and it appearing on your PC.

If you're okay with playing that that lag -- or if you're willing to just do Off-TV Play using the WiiU gamepad -- then you can just buy any HDMI-capable capture device, plug the WiiU into it, and go nuts. If you're not okay with that, then you need one of two things.

1) You need to get a video capture device that has a pass-through -- i.e. the BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle or Intensity Extreme, or the Micomsoft XCapture-1
2) You need to buy an HDMI splitter and two more HDMI cables. WiiU goes to splitter; splitter goes to TV and capture device.

The second is a big pain in the rear end, but has a small added bonus: there are some HDMI splitters out there which will strip HDCP. If you have one of these, you can use them to capture games from PS3 or iOS devices, since those have HDCP turned on at all times and capture cards generally won't support HDCP signals.

If I record off the gamepad it's cheaper and simpler, but that means any streams/footage would be 480p I guess?

Between this, the Yoshi Wool game and Captain Toad, Treasure Tracker, Nintendo is really bringing some sunshine into this grim year 2015.

Yes, but among these three titles, two are games unreleased from series known for being mind-numbingly easy, and one is mind-numbingly easy. I don't see any entertainment value in that.

I don't think being very easy is a major flaw for a video game to have. It's nice to have some challenging games, like Hyrule Warriors, but not every game which is easy is mind-numbing and indeed, they can still be rewarding.

Lunchmeat Larry

I generally agree but I think a lot of Nintendo first-party games do suffer from being far too easy in recent years. I don't think a single level in Mario 3D Land (or any of the other recent Marios) gave me trouble, to the point where the game was pretty unmemorable because I just breezed through the whole thing. I don't think I'm that good at games so I'm not trying to boast, and I appreciate that they're not concerned about challenge above all else, which is fine. I'll still play and enjoy most of the games I'm sure, but I just think they really need to start putting in difficulty modes.

I think some parts of the Galaxy games and New Super Mario Bros. were difficult if you were playing them to completion. I haven't played 3D World yet, but I don't know what else you would mean by recent Marios.

3d world is fun and casual until the very last extra world where it gets rough, but it is thoroughly fun. followed up by an endurance run hell level tho

Great analogy.

I don't get why you guys are taking anime so seriously, I just like good things and I've noticed that the more anime and mallgothy things get, the more I just kinda don't want to even bother. Like, things that are super anime come off as some sort of mix as skeevy and childish, like the kinda poo poo we all loved when we were 15. You know, themes like "Let's use the magic of friendship to kill this deity, also here are some teenagers with K-cups and I don't mean coffee", and well, aren't we all pushing 30 by now? Maybe I've been on the forums too long, but I kinda feel like we should have all grown past that.

The whole mallgothy thing is a lot easier to explain and pretty much the same deal - games like Majora's Mask or Kingdom Hearts are exactly the kind of games you'd expect teenagers who hang out at Hot Topic to discuss in detail. You guys don't play Elmo's Number Journey for N64 and talk about how it's totally a hidden gem on the N64 because it's a game tailor-made for toddlers, why would you play a game made for troubled teenagers? And I know I should probably call them emo games or whatever these days but I'm old enough to actually be a teenager when mallgoths were a thing.

I know Shin Megami Tensei IV is fairly anime and kind of mallgothy, but at least it's written well enough so that anyone can enjoy it. Not that a game being mallgothy really means it's bad or anything, just usually out of your age range. It's good enough to not be full-on mallgothy (because Lord knows its theme fits like a glove), but the mallgoth barometer pretty much means "this is deep to 15 year olds who hate their parents and society but looks dumb to anyone past that". Same goes for anime.

I mean, gently caress, how could it get any simpler? Just play games made for your mental level. And I'm sure we've all mentally surpassed our teen years, right?

It really is not cool. That's why it shouldn't be in a children's game. Do you guys really think Nintendo, with their historically strict standards on censorship, would allow something as insane like Earthbound to ever, EVER be released outside of Japan?

I mean there was loving rape in Game of Thrones and that was shocking and that's a show where there's T&A every ten seconds. I rest my case.

Call of Duty is a hard to describe paradox of a series, in that they do in fact sell its apparel at Hot Topic, which would make one think it'd be mallgothy but it really isn't. It's something your average mallgoth and otaku would be too snobby to play, and sells better to the sort of people who put Monster Energy decals on the back of their pickup trucks. It is 15% anime and 0% mallgothy.
